Hope, joy, scho- larships, friendliness, and spirit are present in all phases of life at Jeff, whether it is in a classroom or in sports competition. To an outsider, the atmosphere at Jefferson is incom- prehensible, because Jefferson is of the old and the new. Traditions, such as «Coney Island Carousel, are the backbone of Jeff. Yet new ex- periences, such as the Halloween biddance, add a spirit of adventure. Together they create a school with harmony. These things happened at Jeff in the year 1966-67: claim her with pride, just as she in her many contacts throughout the world has said with pride, I am an English teacher at Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon. In the bond whi ch that statement asserts we have been elevated as a school. As early as 1941 Martha Shull, having demonstrated her value as a member of many significant local, state, and national committees, was elected president of The Inland Em- pire Education Association. In the summer of 1954, after serving as president of the Oregon Education Association, but before being elected president of the National Education Association, Martha Shull was one of two delegates appointed by the United States Department of State to attend the 17th International Con- ference on Education in Geneva, Switzerland; from there she went as NEA delegate to an International Conference in Oslo, Norway. She was also a delegate to conferences in Canada, Norway, Germany, and the Philippine Islands. In 1955 Presi- dent Eisenhauer selected her to serve on his committee for the White House Conference on Education. She was selected as a member of the joint committee of NEA and the Magazine Publishers Association and also served on the panel of Education Consultants of the Curtis Publishing Company. Lewis and Clark College granted her an honorary LHD degree at the Commencement Exercises where she de- livered the Commencement Address. She was chosen by the Quota Club as a Woman of Acheive- rnent and as a Leading Woman in Oregon Public Affairs by Theta Sigma Phi. Martha Shull has been a classroom teacher for 39 years. During this time, she has brought honor to Jefferson, to the community, and to Portland. She is one of the best known and frequently honored classroom teachers in America. She has dedicated to the improvement of education and the well-being of society her understanding and appreciation of people, her keen insight, her ability to seea problem in its whole, her talent for leadership, and her capacity for concentrated continous effort. The radiance of her spirit, her charm, her poise, the natural way in which she reflects that which is beautiful and true have inspired both students and teachers. She is an ambass- dor of good will wherever she goes. We, the students of Jefferson High School, are proud to dedicate the 1967 Spectrum to Miss Martha Shull. In Dedication 4 Granted an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters by Lewis and Clark College in 1957. In 1956-1957, Miss Shull was unopposed for the Centenial president of N.E.A., the largest teacher organization in the world. 5 ACADEMICS William Knouff Principal Administration Probably no other high school in our city can historically claim the quality of unity to the degree that our own school, Jefferson, can. Since its very beginning in 1909 the student body and the ever grow- ing alumni group have felt a distinct com- mon bond. Whether it has been in their studies, their sports, their social functions or their community services, Jeffersonians have always exhibited a tremendous loyalty toward their school. This unity has made Jefferson a great school. At the fiftieth reunion in the year 1959 it was amazing to see the public auditorium filled to overflowing with graduates who had returned to renew their friendships and their common ties. Whatever present or future accomplish- ments we may obtain will depend to a large degree upon how well we can put aside our differences and work together toward our goals. Only through unity will we over- come the many problems which face us in our complex and challenging society. William A. SENIORS PRESIDENT Tom Tafe ...the right to strive in human dignity toward higher goals was adopted by the Senior Class headed by President Tom Tate. The Class of 1967, in completing their four years at Jefferson, have thus far lived up to their standards. Leadership was just one of the qualities of the class; scholastically they were high and their activities were many. A bid dance entitled, Under the Big Top, bake sales, baccalaureate, commencement, and the prom, Raindrops and Roses, were some of the experiences which upheld their motto. This was truly a busy year, but well worth the ef- fort for the Class of '67. Led by industrious Ron Hayhurst and vivacious Suzi Iverson, the student body officers started the school year with their successful Hello Week. They also furthered relations with other schools by the exchange visit with Rex Putnam students, and pre- game dinners with the cabinets of op- posing schools. The Real Thriller is an excellent example of how this year's fall cabinet worked together to out-do any previous school ac- tivities . The Non-Smoking Campaign proved that the officers held great interest in the community and their fel low students. This year's Fal I Stu- dent Body Officers have displayed much ingenuity and hard work, thus becoming one of the best Demo Cabinets in history. T play drew large crowds who greal enjoyed the acting. Jacque Clar who portrayed Helen Keller, was great success. Since Jacque had dialogue she had to use much acti skill to convey the feeling of bei both blind and deaf. Playing t part of Ann Sullivan was difficult b Diane Kingham made it appear eas The Miracle Worker had ma fightscenes where Jacque and Dia displayed great timing and ability working together. Robin Cogdill a Dennis O'Leary as Helen's parent portrayed the frustrated love the Ke lers had for their daughter. Mr. Wi I cox and Mr. Peterson took hold of a relativelysmall and in- experienced team and really brought it to life. This doesn't overshadow individual efforts though. Tom Tate, Art Mit- chell, Tom McGowan, Tom Ball, Jim Nolten, and Al Davis are only a few of many outstanding seniors who paved the way for a 6-2 record. Defensively, the Democrats were very sound up front. Junior Gary Gutwig gave this line some size. But the defensive backfield was the teams real weak spot. The backs were too inexperienced and too small for the competition. Offensively, Jeff could really move. The small but experienced and speedy line led the way for powerhouse Tom Tate and little Art Mitchell and Larry Wells. This pot- ent offense was I ed by Tom McGowan, one of the best in the city. Coach Wilcox New Coaches Bring Spirit Assistant COACH PETERSON The 1966 Democrats fell one game short of taking the city title as they finished the season with sole posses- sion of third place. The six win, two loss record is the best one com- piled by a Jeff football team since 1963. Jefferson can look forward to a fine varsity team next year with re- turning starters and a very well- balanced J.V. team. Seniors Dominate LIMNELL MEANS Teddies Surrender 36- This game was strictly Jeff wi the Demos racking up 28 first down; to the Teds 7. The always tough Demo defense held the Roosevell ground game to 30 yards while gain ing 188. Tom Tate and Art Mitchel each scored twice while Harve Pfenning kicked a 34 yard field goa for the longest in the P.I.L. this season. Jeff Edges M-Men; 13-6 The previous two losses had no effect on the Democrats as they evened their standing at 2-2 when Marshall was squeezed out. The second quarter saw Tom Tate go over from the two yard line, the only touchdown in the first half. This sent the Demos to the locker room with the lead at halftime for the third consecu- tive game. Quarterback, Tom McGowan scored from the two yard line in the third quar- ter which proved to be needed insur- ance against theM-men's lone fourth quarter touchdown. Jeff Drafts Tech; 27-26 When the cellar-dwelling Techmen invaded Kirby St. the Demos figured the strong favorite. But with the help of a very muddy field which slowed down the speedy Demo backs, Benson turned the game into a real squeaker. Both teams scored in the first quarter and only Jeff scored in the second. This was the sixth game in which Jeff led at half-time. Benson outscored Jeff in the second half 20-14 as the Engineers muffled an extra point try which was the deciding factor. emos Salt Cards; 26-13 rhe Demos opened the season at Lin- ln scoring early in the first quarter ' capping a 59 yard drive with Tom ite's three yard plunge. Then in the cond quarter, Tate again went through e Cardinals' line giving Jeff a com- rtable 13 point lead at halftime. The emos came out of the locker room more -ed up than in the first quarters and snt on to score another 13 points via itchell and Nolten. Lincoln also ored 13 points in the second half but uldn't get any further past Jeff's de- nse. Trojans Upset Demos; 19-7 The first team to visit Jeff also hand- ed us our first defeat. Wilson caught the Demos on an off night and took advantage of the fact. Even though both teams held each other to a score- less first half, the Trojans scored one and two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters respectively. Jeff's third quarter touchdown came when the tough offensive front opened another hoi e for Tom Tate from the two yard line. -Men Squeak By; 29-21 The first half of the Jeff-Grant rival jame was one of the best played by leff as the offense and defense com- ined efforts which put Tate close snough for two touchdowns of two ind three yard runs. This gave the ilueand Gold five more points than Brant's nine. The third and fourth quarters pro- uced only one touchdown for Jeff :ompared to Grant's three. Our ouchdown came in the fourth quar- er when McGowan hit Nolten for 2 yards and the touchdown. Demos Scalp Indians; 27-7 The Demos staked the Indians to an early 7-0 lead but fought back to run over the Tribe. The mighty Demo- crats rol I ed up 244 yards on the ground to only 42 for Cleveland. The game was highlighted by a 20 yard touch- down by Darnell Lowery on an inter- cepted lateral. Art Mitchell also returned a punt 57 yards for another touchdown. Scots Dump Demos; 35-13 The Demos showed that they are true champions even though defeated. The score was one sided, but didn't really show the complete picture as Jeff's line looked strong against the much larger Scots. The Demo running attack came along well due to strong blocking up front. Tom McGowan and Art Mitchell looked good in a losing effort. Jeff Shakes Quakers; 27-7 The smaller but quicker and more spirited Demos went after the Quak- ers trying to prove their ability, and did a great job of it. Led by seniors Tom McGowan and Tom Tate the Jeff offense literally ran over the bigger Quaker defense. The Demo defense was led by Tom Ball and Allen Fre- richs who made many jarring and key tackles. This was the final game of the season and one of the Demos best. i J.V. and Frosh The JV football team was uncon- querable as they ran up a record of 8 wins and 0 losses. Head JV coach, James Alles, contributed the fine season to an outstanding defense and a well balanced offense. Coach Alles was quick to praise all of his players, but as on any team there were individual standouts. Jackie Strong was an excellent quarter- back, with a very strong passing arm. Center Greg Kreiger was the hardest hitting on the team, and Jon Hall and Elmer Morris were credited with between 30 to 50% of the tackles. The nucleus of this team will make up a fine varsity team next year. It was known throughout the city that the Demos had speed, but this alone does not make a championship team. The rest of the ingredients can be summed up into one word-desire. Each player had this desire and because of this, Jefferson finished fourth instate and not fourth in city as we were rated to finish in pre-season polls. The Klamath Fa I Is-Jefferson game was described as the best prep basket- ball game ever played in Oregon. One paper even went so far as to cal I it the game of a decade. After the game the Demo team received nothing but praise for their sports- manship, this was truly a team to be proud of. First half standings JEFF MADISON WASHINGTON MARSHALL CLEVELAND WILSON FRANKLYN GRANT BENSON ROOSEVELT LINCOLN JACKSON Second half standings WASHINGTON JEFF MADISON MARSHALL CLEVELAND WILSON GRANT FRANKLYN BENSON ROOSEVELT LINCOLN JACKSON 165 Jeff 76 Quakers 54 Demos 83 Quakers 60 The season '$ opener for the Demo- crats was against an inexperienced Franklin team . Jeff started a 14 game winning streak when the Quak- kers failed to keep up with the fast Demo pace. The beginning of the second half was justas fatal for Franklin as Jeff burned the Quakers 30-11 in the first quarter. Jeff 82 Jackson 4] Demos 71 Jackson 52 The Demos gained another victory when a diapered Jackson team in- vaded the Jeff court. Jeff showed their superiority by manhandling the Raiders out the door. A home court advantage and twel ve games of experience were behind the Raiders in the second Jeff-Jack- son meet but to no avaiI as the Demo- crats rolled up their thirteenth vic- tory. Jeff 75 Grant 72 Demos 73 G-Men 53 Jefferson's Demos went to number- two-rated Grant ready to play ball and did just that. The speedy Demos were ahead most of the way, but the bigger Generals closed the gap in the final quarter. Jeff held on to win, however, as Bill Drake and Larry Beaman made many clutch plays. Grant came to Jeff in the second half bent for revenge, but were un- able to get anywhere. The fastbreak- ing Demos ran right by the slower Generals and had no trouble winning. Gary Ladd shot well from outside and Bill Drake pulled down many import- ant rebounds. Jeff 70 Trojans 55 Demos 73 Trojans 7 O Jefferson continued its winning ways as they swept two games from the Wilson Trojans. The first game played on a Friday night at Wilson was all Jeff's. The Demos raced to an early lead and never rel inquished it. The second string gained experi- ence for the state tournament as they played most of the second half. The second game between these two teams was played at Jeff on a Tues- day afternoon. This was one of the best Tuesday games played at Jeff all year. The game was close all the way going into the last minute. Jeff 88 Indians 62 Demos 67 Indians63 The Demo basketball team had lit- tle trouble as they defeated Cleve- land in both games this year. The games at Jeff started slow, but the Demos got hot and hit for lOstraight points, leaving the Indians too far behind to catch the quicker opposi- tion. The second meeting of these two schools proved to be a much closer game as the Indians slowed down the Demo fast break and were in contention until they fell behind permanently at the start of the fourth quarter. The scoring was well bal- anced as three Demos hit in double figures; Gary Ladd again led the way with 23 points. J-Men 6 7 M-Men 5 8 Demos 77 Marshall 54 The young Marshall Minutemen, composed mostly of sophomores and juniors, almost upset the highly rat- ed and undefeated Jefferson Demo- crats in the first game of the season between these two teams. The Demos were cold from the floor and only the rebounding of Don Sheppard and Bill Drake enabled the Demos to pull out the victory in the closing minutes. Jim Tims and Don Bussey had a fine game as they led their team in scor- ing. Jeff 91 Tech 69 Demos 89 Engineers65 Jeff ended the first half on a good note by beating Benson on their home court for a perfect 11-0 record. This was the Demo's highest point output of the season. The Techmen stayed with Jeff throughout the first half, but slowed down in the third quarter as the Demo's pulled quickly away. The second encounter at Jeff was much the same as the Demos pulled away quickly and never looked back. J-Men 62 Teds 52 Demos 84 Roosevelt 59 Jeff travelled to Roosevelt confi- dent after two big wins over Madi- son and Washington, but always tough Roosevelt surprised the Demos as they stayed right with them. The game was marred by turnovers and fouls by both team. Larry Beaman and Rick Mickels came off the bench to spark the Demos to victory. The second time around looked the same and was justas close due to the hot shooting of Roosevelt's Dennis Cross , but Gary Ladd's hot hand made the difference for Jeff's vic- tory. 169 State Tourney The State Tournament proved to be one of tremendous success for the Demos. The team made a very re- spectable fourth place showing, but more impressive was the true Jeffer- son sportsmanship exhibited on and off the floor by al I Jefferson students. The Democrats started off the tour- nament with a very convincing vic- tory over Mac Hi. Next came Kla- math Falls, the number one rated team in the state. The Demos were in command at half-time as they shot a torrid .667 from the floor, but as the three-quarter mark rolled around. Captain Jim Tims got into foul trouble; the Pelicans jumped into the lead and held on for the win. The rest of the tournament was an anti-climax after this game. Even though neither Jeff [nor Klamath Fal Is won the tournament both teams showed their poise and were rated by most people as the two best in the state. Much sickness and some friction were two of the reasons. He finally cut the number of team members, and as a result, they began playing better. His players did, however, gain ex- perience, since there was only one junior, Lester Cooke, on the team. This enabled the sophomores to play more often during the games. One freshman, Chuck Washington, also did a fine job and should be a key to Jeff's future success. Baby Demos Reap Victories The freshman team this year end- ed with a record of 9-4. Losing to Washington, Grant, and two metro teams, the baby dribblers finally jelled and went on to win the rest of their games. Coach Osborn feels that the team had excellent shooting, rebound- ing, and most important of all, good floor leadership. At times we blew the other team right off the floor Coach Osborn commented. Arnold Osborn was one of the standouts on this team as he took 1st in city and 6th in state on the rings. Cal Duvall also took a 1st place on the parallel bars and Andy Granger took 4th . Coach Campbell credited the good showing to lots of time and hard work. Next year's team will have many returning lettermen and should also prove to be an outstand- ing team. Gymnasts Fly High The girls' tennis team has practiced many long hours on the parking lot tennis courts. Coach Jensen com- mented on the teams' lack of experi- ence, which it will have next year, and also on the never-dying spirit of the girls.
