This nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened ... in this respect I want to pay tribute to those citizens North and South who’ve been working . . . not out of a sense of duty, but out of a sense of human decency. Like our soldiers and sailors in all parts of the world, they are meeting freedom’s challenge on the firing line, and I salute them for their honor and their courage. (Civil Rights Address) “Ask not what your country can do for you . . . We stand today on the edge of a new frontier . .. (it) is not a set of promises, it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them. ... It would be easier to shrink from that new frontier . .. but I believe that the times require imagination and courage. . . . For courage not complacency is our need today. (Accepting Nomination) ask what you can do for your country. We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first Revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans — born in this century, tempered hy war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage . . . In the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defend- ing freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility — I welcome it. I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other genera- tion. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it — and the glow from that fire can truly light the world. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth, God’s work must truly he our own. (Inaugural Address) 5
