He thinks for himself, .uses scientific methods for coming to.conclusions, and translates his convictions and findings into Wet£©n, that oilers may benefit from his work. Thoughts alone'may.givc satisfaction to die person harboring them but prove of no .v£fUic to others unless release , independence of thinking is as necessary to man's existence as die food he eats, the water lie drirnrs, the shelter lie needs, and the clothing he wears. Repeated attempts to stifle die individual have brought failure to the prtg rators and hopelessness to the unfortunates upon whom their wills were imposed. EARL KELLMER MRS. MILDRED MITCHEL Next fall Earl Kellmer plans to leave the physics lab in Room 7A and take an ex- tended trip to Europe. After that he may even visit more distant spots if the mood so moves him. Although Mr. Kellmer has taught phys- ics, mathematics, biology, and science for thirty-seven years, nine of these at Jefferson, he is a man of varied interests. Music, first aid, the American Red Cross, and geology are only a few of the many activities which this versatile instructor enjoys. Respected by all for his kindly sense of humor and the quiet, efficient manner in which he carries on his classes, Mr. Kellmer will be difficult to replace. We wish he were not leaving Jefferson, but we are very pleased that he has so inter- esting and educational an experience planned for his future. Mrs. Mildred Mitchol, faculty member of twenty-three years' standing, is graduating from Jef- ferson, too, this year in a sense—graduating to free and pleasant hours to concentrate on her often neg- lected pastimes of reading, driving, and visiting in- teresting places. Fire drills and air raid drills won't seem the same somehow without her standing in the center hall, stop watch in hand, checking to see if the pre- sent record can be beaten. Christmas won't be Christmas at Jefferson with- out the geometric tree in Room -204. Let's hope that future geometry classes carry on this time-honored tradition. Knowing her bounding energy, it's impossible to imagine this lady retiring from anything; she'll probably be busier than ever. We're Proud Of Our Modern Versatile Faculty Mr. Jones and Mrs. Say demonstrate the predecessor to the Rock and Roll . Mrs. Meyer compiles the daily absentee list with the assistance of Julia Woronsberg. Mrs. Conns and Mrs. Charleston serve at the tea welcoming the new teacherijwho are Mr. Schmidt, Miss Unruh, Mr. Roche, Mrs. Cauthers, Mrs. Warren, Mr. Clark, Mrs. Gilbert, Mr. Windisch, Mr. Picnovi. LfiiiNKl Mrs. Mitchell conducts her class with a big smile. Mrs. Tyler and Mr. Knudson confer about a mutual counseling problem. In reality our high school career has terminated but it has left us an image of fond memories that will live forever. Only a short time ago we entered Jefferson, ambitious, eager to learn, and willing to accept the challenge that faced us. Our curiosity here has since been satisfied--sat- isfied by the many accomplishments of the class in scholarship, athletics, student govern- ment and social activities. The Class of 1956 deeply appreciates the fact that the fac- ulty, counselors, and administrators have constantly strived to provide us with a superior liberal education. Nowthc time has come to move on. We can take another step along the road of life and feel confident that we are prepared to face a new challcnge--the future. THE SENIOR CLASS SONG (To the tune of Beyond the Blue Horizon ) We see a new horizon, And the road to success. Our hearts are filled with gladness, And a touch of sadness. We'll cherish all we've learned here -- Remember what we have done. Let's face the new tomorrow With its rising sun. Beyond our new horizon. Waits a beautiful day. Good-bye to all our friends here, Life begins, not ends, here. Our high school days are ended, But life has only begun. Let's face the new tomorrow With its rising sun. In the fall they elected their Friend- liest Jeffersonians and Best Citi- zens. They held a jelly-doughnut sale to correspond with their sponsorship of the Je-Li Roll after the Jeff-Lincoln game. In December they held their annual class party, titled The Ninth Before Christmas. Christmas decorations were used to set the gay mood of the evening. Next, they chose their class jewelry and motto. Soon juniors were wearing their class jewelry and proudly displaying their class identification cards. The next exciting event was the presenta- tion of the juniors' King and Queen of Hearts. The excitement of electing student body and class officers climaxed the juniors' busy year. Justly contented with their class activities, the junior class offi- cers and counselors take breath- er after the busy year. SOPHOMORES The past year has been a very busy one for the sophomore class. Their initial activity was the sponsorship of an aftergame dance during the football season. The first special event was the elec- tion of the Best Citizens and Friendliest boy and girl of the sophomore class. The presenta- tion of the Sophomore King and Queen of Hearts proved to be a memorable occasion, also. The Sophomore Class Party, which was held on Washington's Birth- day and appropriately named the Hatchet Hop, provided both fun and talent for all who attended. Springtime heralded other festi- vities such as the Spring Infor- mal, reigned over by the Junior Court, and the Cotton and Cord dance. The event-filled year was brought to a successful close by the election of next year's class officers. The sophomore class officers and counselors are happily looking forward to next year's activities. The school began to take notice of the freshmen when they presented their Friend- liest Jeffersonians and Best Citi- zens to the student body. Soon they were well under way in writ- ing their constitution and organiz- ing the class government. At the Freshman Reception, they ac- quainted interested parents with their teachers and classes. Pe- titions for the candidates for the various class offices were taken out soon after the constitution was completed. These candidates were presented in an assembly and voted on, after which the first class officers began their term. Plans for the annual class party were then started. The party was a very successful event as was proved by the large number of freshmen who turned out to enjoy an evening of fun with their class- mates. Of course, the annual May Day brought a lot of excite- ment to the Freshman Class. The Junior Court was made up partly of freshmen, who represented their class and very ably reigned over the Spring Informal. The election of next year's officers brought to a close a very success- ful year for the Freshman Class. It was the ninth time in the history of city com- petition that a team had finished their schedule without being beaten or tied. Tom DcSylvia, who has seen three city champion- ships won at Jefferson in his four years as head coach, rates this team the best, not only in athletic ability, but also in spirit and the will to win. Jeff was tied in its prcscason game but came back the next week in the league opener to defeat Franklin. The Quakers were heavy favorites to win the city title. The high point of the Demos' league season came when Jeff up-ended Washington from the 19S5 undefeated ranks. The Colonials finished the season in second place. When the Democrats beat Roosevelt, they officially clinched the league championship. A 7-6 last-league- game victory over Benson preserved Jefferson's undefeat- ed PIL status. In its first state play-off game the Portland champs beat the favored Corvallis Spartans 20-6. Hadden, J., Busch, R., Nelson, H. When Jeff and Gresham met the following Friday, the game was rated a toss-up, but the Valley Coast champions proved too strong, ending the Democrats' bid for the state title, 6-0. The Gophers, however, received a 26-0 shellacking from the powerful Marshfield Pirates, who with that victory clinched the 1955 state champion- ship. Ten Jeffersonians were placed on both the Portland papers' All-City teams. Making the first unit were line- men Keith Harris, Roger Thomson, Howard Hogan, and Wally Sanders. Second-squad members were Ken Stodd, Huey Hatton, and Chuck Rask—all backfield starters-- and tackle Dick Hanson. Fullback A1 Klein and end Dick Johnson were selected for the third team. Franklin was defeated on the strength of a conversion by Nate Jones. The accurate placement came after Jeff had scored their lone touchdown on a pass from junior quar- terback Chuck Jacques to end Eric Larson. Jeff used its ground attack success- fully in rolling up the biggest score of its season. All four touchdowns were scored on the ground. Sprinter half- back Huey Hatton ripped off runs of 35 and 40 yards for his two TD contribu- tions while fullback A1 Klein and Chuck Jacques, quarterback, scored the Demos' other two touchdowns on 5-yard runs. Paced by Carol Everett, who cap- tured three events and broke two rec- ords, Jeff came in third after losing league encounters to Cleveland and Grant and being tied by Lincoln's Car- dinals. In the state meet Jeff also placed third behind Cleveland and Grant. This was the same order the teams placed in the city meet. Miss Everett won two events in the state division. BOYS' SWIMMING Jefferson's boys' swimming team was not very successful in its 1955 sea- son, winning but one Portland Interscho- lastic swimming meet. The Demos finished fifth in the city meet with three swimmers, Art Olm- stead, Bob Bruce, and Gary Robinson, placing in several events. Coached by Edwin Schneider, the boys beat Cleveland by default and tied Franklin for the only bright spots on their Portland league record. CROSS COUNTRY Jefferson's Varsity Cross Country team had a not-too-succcssful sea- son in 1955. The Demo runners did fairly well in Tri-Meet competition but finished sixth in the City Meet The Junior Varsity faired better. The JV's finished third in the City Meet and came out on top in two Tri-Meets. Eugene Mitchell, a junior, prov- ed to be Jeff's best runner in '55. In a meet against Lincoln the lanky Mitchell finished in front of all his competitors by twenty-five yards. Lincoln won the meet, however, going on to take the City Meet. Neeley, before coming to Jeff, guided ScappooseHigh School to the State A-2 Tour- nament. Jefferson had a short but fast basketball team in 1956. The tallest man on the starting five was center Jerry Ander- son, six-foot four. Other starters were Art Roth, Bob Bcrrc- man, Bob Jacob and Chuck R ask. All but Roth were seniors. These four were the only seniors on the thirteen-man squad. When Jeff defeated Roosevelt in its thirteenth PIL contest, the Demos won the title for the tenth time in the league's fifty- year history. Only two teams, Benson and Franklin, were able to stop Jeff in PIL play. The Quakers dropped the Demos twice, and Benson gained a split with Jeff. The Democrat basketball team placed three men on the twoPortland papers' All-City teams. Anderson andRask made both papers' first squads, andBerreman made one second team. Jefferson was the only school to have two players on the first team. When Rask was selected for the 1956 All-State first team, he became the fourth player from Jeff to receive such an honor. The highlight of the contest was supplied by Bob Jacob as the slippery guard scored 12 points in two and a half minutes of the third quarter to finish off the Tualatin-Yamhill Val- ley Leaguers. Jacob was high man for Jeff with 12, followed by Ron Langos with 10. The win brought the Democrats' preseason record to 4-0. Jerry An- derson led the Demos to their fifth straight win of the season with twenty-five points. Jeff suffered its first loss in its next game, however, to Klamath Falls. Jefferson came back the next night to even the series. The Demos finished their preseason schedule with a win over Hillsboro. COLONIALS BEATEN Keith Abbott, 6-6 reserve center, goes up for two points against Washington as tire Colonials' All-City forward, Larry Lynn, looks on. The Democrats defeated Washington in both games by scores of 69-53 and 59-48. Guard Chuck Rask was high-point man in each contest with 23 in the first victory and 17 in the second. In the second game, cen- ter Jerry Anderson collected 24 rebounds, a season's high for Jefferson. Jeff had to come from behind to win the first game as the Colonials led at halftime, 34-32, but Coach John Neeley used all his reserves in the second game when the Demos easily rolled over Washington. High-scoring General center, Roger Fleck, stands behind Berreman. Number 14 for Jefferson is Jerry Anderson. The Demos dumped Grant twice, 66-59 and 61-55. In the first meeting of the two teams, Riley failed to hit a field goal, and Jefferson controlled the game, winning easily. With Riley scoring well, the second game was close all the way with neither team taking a commanding lead. Bcrreman was high-point man for Jeff in the second game with 19, while Bob Jacob led the Demos in the first with 16. CLEVELAND DROPS TWO Jumping a shot over the head of a Cleve- land defender is Chuck Rask, Jeff's All-City guard. Jefferson beat the Indians twice by the wide margins of 74-55 in the first game and 70-46 in the second. All-City Center Jerry Anderson led the Demos to the first victory with tremendous rebounding and 23 points. Bob Bcrreman turned in an amazing 100 per cent shooting average in the second Dcmo-Indian con- test as he hit 6-6 field goals and 3-3 foul shots. The six-foot, 170-pound forward totaled 12 points in the first game. 173 GARY BAKER Guard JIM HOLLINGSWORTH Guard RON LANGOS Guard GARY MELLEMA Forward CARDINALS DROP PAIR Lincoln forward Andre Laborde picks off a rebound in the Lincoln-Jefferson game. Bob Berreman of Jeff makes a vain attempt to steal the ball. Watching the action are Cardinals Jim Cloutier (13), Berkly Holman (24), and Mike Doherty (15). The Democrats had to come from be- hind in both games to squeeze out two one- point victories, 51-50 and 48-47. Heavy fouling by Jefferson was a large factor in Lincoln's near-upsets as the Demos saw early leads overcome by the Cards in both con- tests due to their excessive fouls. Doherty, a forward, was high-point man in the games with totals of fifteen and eleven points. Berreman and Art Roth were high-point men for Jeff in the initial encounter, each scoring eleven, and Berreman led the Demos in the second contest with ten. QUAKERS POST WINS Jerry Anderson hoists a Jump over the head of Franklin's giant center Bjarne Jensen in the Quaker-Jeff game as Franklin guard Jack Luhrs attempts to check the shot. The Quakers were the only team to defeat the 1956 Jeff squad twice. Led by Jensen Frank- lin won by scores of 60-59 and 79-60. The first game was close all the way and went intoovertime at 56-56. Three Jeffer- son garters fouled out of the contest before the extra period began. Franklin controlled the second game easily. Bjarne's team mates consistently fed him the ball on high passes under the hoop, helping him to his hottest night of the year when he scored 42 points. ■•BJ had 27 in the initial game, giving him a two-game total of 69 points. BEN LAUGHUN TOM SHAVER w Manager Manager TEDS TRIMMED TWICE Demo guard Bob Jacob sets up a play against Roosevelt Trying to break up the scoring attempt is Teddie Andy Lawson (6) as Sherman Cochran (9), Roosevelt's sophomore center, watches the action. Jefferson crushed the cellar- dwelling Roughriders twice, 75-S5 and 67-37. In both games, the Demos started slowly. The Teddies grabbed an 11-9 first-quarter lead in the initial contest, and the sec- ond game saw an 8-8 first-period tie. BENSON GAINS SPLIT Art Roth drives in for two of his 14 points in the first Jefferson-Benson game, which Jeff won 53-50. Bob Bcrreman looks on,and behind Roth is high-scoring Engineer JBm Warren. Benson came back in the teams second meeting to chalk up the biggesj upset of the 1956Portland league season as thcTechmen defeated the Democrats on the Jeff court, 65-60. Jefferson led at all the quarter stops, but Benson gained the lead permanently with three minutes left in the fourth period. The Mechanics won at the free-throw line where they hit 21 to Jeff's 14. Roth's 14 was high for Jeff in the first game while Jerry Anderson and Bob Jacob scored 19 and 18, respectively, in the second. 175 CORVALLIS EDGED MARSHFIELD PREVAILS Marshfield's Sandy Fraser looks for a Pirate teammate to pass to after snaring a rebound. Jeff's Jerry Anderson comes down after an unsuccessful attempt for a two- pointer. Marshfield had too much for Jefferson, defeating the Demos 67-45. The Pirates took a 27-11 first-quarter lead and never gave it up, keeping the pressure on Jefferson most of the way. The Southern Oregon band had a 41-25 halftime advantage. Roger Johnson, later to become an All- State guard, was high for the game with twenty-two points, followed by Pirate team- mate, Fraser, who scored twenty. Chuck Raskgot fifteen points for Jeff and Anderson twelve. Bob Bcrrcman goes up over die guard of Corvallis center, Roland Carpenter, for two points. Jefferson staved off a last-half rally to edge the Spartans, 50-48. The Democrats were trailing 26-23 at halftime but came back in the third quarter to get seventeen big points, while Corvallis could only muster five. The Spartans, how- ever, came back in the laststama to almost win, outscoring Jeff 18 to 10. High point man in the game was Jeff's ChuckRask, who dropped in fifteen points. He was followed in scoring by the Spartan's six-foot center, Carpenter, who dropped in 14. Demo forward, Art Roth, contributed 13 to the Jefferson win. Corvallis was knocked out of the state tournament consolation bracket in its next game with Milton-Frccwater. 176 Jeff's Rally girls whoop it up as the Demo basketball team scores on their way to a 63- 55 victory over the Milwaukic Mustangs. It was Jefferson's second win of the state tournament and its third game. The Demos led all the way. In the first quarter Jeff took a 17-13 command, stretching it to a 35-24 halftime advantage. The Democrats held a 47-42 lead in the third quarter. Milwaukic was led by center Len Paloa, who was high-point man in the game with seventeen points. Demo center Jerry Ander- son hit for sixteen. Mustang guard Ed Cross- cnbachcr and Jeff's Art Roth had fourteen and twelve respectively. EUGENE SQUEAKS BY All-State guard Chuck Rask goes up over Eugcnc'sDavc Powell for two of the twenty- seven points he scored against the Axemen. Doug Lundstrom and Charlie Warren are be- hind Rask. Led by Rask's twenty-seven, Jeff almost, but not quite, beat the heavily favored Eu- gene five. The Axemen's only loss in the tourney came at the hands of Franklin, who went on to become the 1956 State Champ- ions. Jeff was edged by Eugene, 78-76. The Demos had a chance to tic up the game with Rask at the frcc-throw line with three seconds left. Rask aimed the ball so Keith Abbott would get the rebound, which he did, but missed his follow-up shot. Rask then got the rebound but missed his shot, too as the game ended. The Demos were under a new coach, Andrew Pienovi. Pienovi, in his first year as baseball coach at Jefferson, after successful seasons with Columbia Prep high school, had his work cut out for him. In 1955, the Jeff nine finished in a fifth-place tie with Franklin. It was the second straight season that Jeff had ended up in a fifth-place tie, while Grant was grabbing two con- secutive championships. The Demos had a young squad this year, especially the pitch- ing staff. Pienovi hadseven hurlers in '56 made up of one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and two freshmen. Returning from last year's team was the only senior, Roger Thomson. Behind the plate were veteran Jim Davis and sophomore Doug White. Davis was an All-Legion catcher for Jefferson's American Legion team. Returning in the outfield was Bob Berreman, two-time All- City pick. Another sure bet for an outfield position was Chuck Jacques. A close race between four players was being waged for the other position. The infield berths seemed a bit uncertain, although seniors Bob Jacob and Bob Johnson had sewed up places at third base and shortstop, respectively. Jerry Beachell seemed to have the edge on the first-base sack. Second base was very much open. Pienovi stated thatBerrcman, Jacques, Chuck Rask, and Willie Owens appeared to be his best hitters but could not commit him- self further, since it was too early. Martin, C, Beach, G. Missing from his 1955 JV squad were such standouts as Jerry Klein, Jerry Bcachell, Mark Miller, Gary Baker, and Jim Hollingsworth. Coach Hull did, however, expect to have a good year. The team was under a new coach, Michael Roche, tills year. Also back to haunt Portland Interscholastic League opponents were seniors Jim McIntosh and Steve Short and juniors Frank Smith and Bob Bihl. Almost half of the squad were returning lettermen. Heading the '56 aggregation was captain Dt n Bihl, one of the state's top teen- age golfers. Bihl had lettered in varsity golf for three years. ATHLETIC DIRECTOR The position of athletic director is a complicated and important one. H. P. Rickcrt hold this post at Jefferson. One of Mr. Rickcrt's main tasks is concerned with the eligi- bility of all athletes. Since the principal is responsible to the Oregon Athletic Association for the eligibility list, the post of athletic director was established in order to release the principal from this exacting and important task. Physical examinations for all athletes also ■fall under Mr. Rickcrt's supervision as well as the compiling and printing of several sports booklets. fi i Mr. Rickert at Work 189 JEFFERSON'S IS 6 TRACK TEAM TRACK MARVIN CROSS Head Coach When this article was written, Jeff's Crack squad was busily preparing for its 1956 season. Last year the Demos finished sec- ond to Grant in the city relays and city meet but did not compete in dual competition. Back on the '56 squad was state 100-yard dash champion Huey Hatten, who was expected to defend his 1955 title in the state Crack meet. Hatten was also expected to better his best time of last year. Strongly dominated by juniors, Jeff was expected to be able to win all of its dual meets in Portland Intcrscholastic League com- petition, capture the city relays, and win the city meet. Jeff's 880-re lay team was expected to provide Jeff with another major point-getter. Sprinters Jack Thomas, Dick Briggs, and Ken Stodd, along with Hatten, made up this team. The all-junior aggregation of Robert Chinn, Gary Green, and John Christianson made up the 440 entries. Running the half mile was Heinz Antoni, Chris Fox, Wilson Perry and John Voloudakis. Two of Jefferson's milers were Jim Graham and Eugene Mitchell. Harold Nelson, Reed Timmerman, Ron Forsyth, and Ted Van Bceck made the Demos look promising in the hurdles this season. Nelson was Junior Varsity hurdles champion in '55. Veterans Paul Stangcland aid Dick Jahnson made the Demos look ood in the broad jump. Non-letter winner Timmerman also broad jumped. High jumping were juniors Art Roth andBill Krohn. In the pole vault tire Jeff team boasted some strong competi- tion in Howard Hogan, Herbie Harms, and Larry Wick. Harms won the Junior Varsity pole-vault championship last year. Jeff had Portland's best high school shot putter, Allan Klein. He was the defending city champion and was looking for better throws this season. Backing up Klein were juniors Joe Wendliek and John Zubcrbuhler. Senior Dick Hanson was the Demo's only discus man this year. Hanson finished second in the city in 1955. Jefferson did not have anyone in the javelin. MANAGERS 192 Danny Spence and Jerry Olmsted. JV TRACK The junior varsity, coached by John Neeley, had an excellent chance to repeat its 19SS B track championship. Although the JV's did not have any men returning from its '55 squad, since only freshmen and sophomores can participate in any junior varsity sport, the Demo B's looked extremely good in the sprints and the field events. Missing from the '55 team were such standouts as Herb Harms, Dick Briggs, Ron Timmerman, Ed Lynch, and Harold Nelson. John Geist, Dave Winter- holler, Benny Parries, and Fred Hill were expected to give Jeff many of its points. B squadder soars for height FROSH TRACK The freshman track team, as always, was a question, since only first-year men at Jeff can go out for the C” sport. The team, like B track, was coached by John Neeley. Last year, in 1955, the frosh finished high in Portland Inter- scholastic track standings. Reports of early practices had it that Jeff's strength was evenly divided in the distance, sprint, and field events. 197 - Frosh ready for event Club Leaders Form Leadership Class FRONT ROW: Lindquist, G., Daum, M., Bene man, B., Muck, C. We have endeavored to design and assemble a 1956 SPECTRUM that not only merits repre- senting Jefferson, but one which also meets with your satisfaction. In reviewing our accomplishments throughout the year, we real- ize they would not have been possible without the cooperation of MR. GENE GILBERT of Gladys Gilbert Photography Studios for be- ing so exceedingly cooperative and helpful . . . MRS. JACQUE JAE- GER for advising our art editors . . . MR. Meetings last about l' j hours, followed by coffee- and-doughnuts and inter- esting bull sessions for Dads able to stay. Those o( us already in this club invite you to join us—if you, too, are fortunate enough to be the father (or male guardian) of a Jefferson student. This is a friendly, informal club. Our rules are few and flexible. At the same time, the club is proud of its record for getting things done when called upon by students, faculty or the community. • HOW TO JOIN Come to a meeting and sign up ... or contact the club secretary ... or send $1 with your full name and address to the Live Wire of- fice at Jefferson high school. The Jeff Dads Club is not affiliated with any other organization. Often, however, we've assisted other groups, but we glory in our own independence as a purely J.H.S. organization. First, last and always we're for Jefferson, its students. • JOBS TO BE DONE Dads able to participate ac- tively in club endeavors may volunteer for work on these committees; program, membership, telephone, an- nua] Jeff Spring Musical, football and track and field patrol, publicity, building and modernization, activi- ties.
