2 DEDICATION A privilege for fathers only is membership in the Jefferson Dads' Club. Jefferson owes a debt of gratitude to the men who have strived to provide for the students and school a wholesome attitude of pride and ownership in the spirit that is truly Jefferson’s. These men have always responded eagerly when called upon by the school, faculty, or community. Theirs is an enviable record of worthwhile accomplishments. As an organization they have actively participated in such en- deavors as theSpring Music Festival, patrolingat games, the build- ing modernization program, chaperoning school dances and Youth Center events, scholarships, job counseling and placement, and the purchasing of new uniforms for the band. What finer example of community spirit can be found than that of this sterling group of men who have contributed unselfishly of their own time and energy to make ever}' project they undertake a success? The yearbook staff and the class of 1055 respectfully and proudly dedicate this Spectrum to the JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL DADS' CLUB. JONES, PRINCIPAL 8 Dean of Girls C. L. Jonhs. Principal DOROTHY FLEGEL Dean of Boys ROY MALO MESSAGE TO THE CLASS OF 1955 Each citizen should give thoughtful consideration both to the allegiance he owes his country and to the bountiful gifts bestowed upon him by our nation. No nation or government can stand unless its people are both familiar with and active in the support of its philosophy and its beliefs. Freedoms and rights granted by our constitution must be jealously guarded and vigorously maintained. Our entire history is filled with stories of patriotic people who have given their lives that this young and ever-growing nation might preserve for itself, a. for the world at large, the dignity andrespect for the individ- ual. Throughout the years, challenge after challenge has been met and surmounted. Our generation--like those that have gone before--faces its problems. World leadership is an exacting taskmaster. All eyes are focused upon our every gesture, movement or declara- tion. Our beliefs are being soul-searched; our institutions, examined minutely; and our will to protect our heritage at all cost is being appraisedby friend and foe alike. The thoughtful silence which greets the parting of the curtains on our present- day historical drama is vibrant with portent. We, the actors, must play our respective parts courageously and positively, emboldened by the knowledge that our country, with its per- sonal freedoms, offers to its world audience a way of life— second to none. 9 FACULTY Allen Alexander Social Studies Pat Barney Mathematics Clarence Beyer Social Studies Ruth Bonnctt Mathematics Charles Bradford Music Sue Bushncll Social Studies Edith Charlston Music Faye Chavez Commercial Charles Collins English Audrey Coons Commercial Grace Deirlein Languages Georgia Dean Science Ruth Hall Librarian Marvin Cross Physical Education Tom DcSylvia Physical Education Phillip Hammond English I orrest Dalrymple Social Studies Lawrence Edwards Social Studies Harold Hansen Social Studies Ruth Hodson Commercial Jacque Jaeger Art Hazel Karr Mathematics Evelyn Klopfenstein Office Staff Dolores Leavens English 1 Robert Henderson English Alice Johnson Commercial Elma Kimbrcll English William Knouff Mathematics Helen Koopman Mathematics Marian Kilborn Languages Alice Huffsmith Office Staff Joe Hood Social Studies Felice Hilton Librarian Robert Hull Physical Educatior Theodore Karges Social Studies Jack King Counselor CarlKnudsen Mathematics Jean Hill Science Merle Lotz Music Noreen McDonald English Rhetta McLean Social Studies Echo McMahon Social Studies Charlotte Merritt English £ Hugh McGinnis Commercial Hugh Merritt Social Studies Ann Meyer Office Staff. Now, having attained our goal, we graduate! We face the demands and problems of the outside world with the valuable training and experience made at Jefferson during the last four years. Perhaps it can be said that high school has offered to each and everyone of us three main fields of endeavor: scholarship, athletics, and leadership. We, tire Class of 1955, are deeply grateful for the privilege of having attended Jefferson. Its traditions have inspired us; its opportunities have enlarged our horizons. We have prepared for the future, whether it be college, work, our country's armed services, or the establishing of a home. We have learned of the responsibilities which we will be expected to assume in tire future years as citizens of our communities. Athletics arc in important part of our high school's livelihood, and Jefferson boasts her share of glory and honor won in competition. We, as Jeffersonians, are proud of outstanding school spirit, built on three attributes: fair play, perse- verance, and loyalty. How often have we seen this demonstrated at athletic events and various school activities! Through leadership and followership we have developed a better understanding of democratic principles. Each one of us has become aware of his responsibilities to society. We now face the future with a true appreciation of democracy and freedom. It is only natural that we express gratitude and sincere farewell to our friends of Jefferson High School. We partic- ularly wish to thank our counselors, advisers, teachers and administrators. In the future years we shall always be proud to say, I graduated from Jefferson. CLASS SONG (To the tune of You'll Never Walk Alone ) Words written by Lois Lorenz, Nancy Lee, Loett Voss, and Barbara Hyche When we come to the end of our high school years, We think back on what we have done, All the friends we have made here at Jefferson, And the fine way our lives have begun. Walk on, look up, be proud and be sure, And then we will reach our goal. Walk on, look up, be proud and be sure, And then we will reach our goal, And we will reach our goal. It is as tho' we are starting a brand new life, With visions of dreams to come true. There'll be hope, love and strife As we walk through the years; Let our faith conquer all of our fears. Walk on, look up, be proud and be sure, And then we will reach our goal. Walk on, look up, be proud and be sure, And then we will reach our goal, And we will reach our goal. The society has served the school annually with a program to explain to freshmen the importance of scholarship, character, service, and leadership during high school years. Interest in high achievement is also stimulated for the freshmen by the award of an Outstanding Freshman Cup to tire boy and tire girl who arc the most outstanding students of their class. Anew program to inform juniors about college schol- arship and recognition was initiated this year. The National Honor Society not only serves the school, but offers activities and events to tire members which are both fun and educational. This year they included a field trip to tire University of Portland, an all-city banquet for seniors, the installation of tire new Grant chapter, a joint meeting with Grant, and installation dinners in honor of the spring and fall officers. 104 Bob Fiddaman President GOLD KEY Left to Right: R. Publishing the news while it was news, developing school spirit and loyalty, and recording a complete history of the 1954-55 school year were the constant aims of the staff. Supported principally with funds voted by the stu- dent body and advertising solicited by the members of the staff, the Jeffersonian, with the assistance of the school board, was able to send delegates from the journalism department to two press conferences in Eugene and Seattle. The highlight of the year came with the presenta- tion of the first-place award won by the paper for edi- torial-page excellence in the Oregon Scholastic Press competition sponsored by the University of Oregon Journalism department. jTm Cour Sports Editor-Spring Sports Editor-Fall Mother of Year' .vaora; Itnr.fcf. .1 rurv . w . ...... Coach With the same prowess and spirit that always identifies Jef- ferson football teams, Tom De Sylvia's Demo’s went all the way to the top to become the 1954 city championship team. For the third year in a row Jefferson placed a team in the state playoff competition won this year by the strong South Salem eleven. Sporting a 7 - 2 record, the season furnished many high points, but few Demos will forget the last four minutes of the final Lincoln game. With four minutes left in the final quarter, it was all tied up, 7-7, and when the final whistle blew, the score stood 27 - 7 in Jefferson’s favor. It’s not easy to single out outstanding players this year; there were so many. But certainly special mention should be given to All-City team members Grant Jackson, John Peterson, and Jerry Spivey, Second Team All-City players Charles Rask, James Renfro, and Jerome Simpson, and Honorable mention players Ron Leverett and Harvey Garnett. On the lighter side, the team will long remember the night that the pre-game jitters so overcame Harvey Garnett that he forgot to put on his thigh guards. This fact, however, does not spell a successful season for Jefferson in basketball. We had a good year measured in terms of preseason expectations and what we actually did. The difference between a good and a successful season was determined by losing two out of the last three games and dropping a one-point thriller in the ensuing play-off. The satisfaction of having a good season is ours, but it is our hope that the determination to have many successful seasons remains in the hearts and minds of the excellent seniors leaving school as well as with our returning athletes. —John Neeley, Coach Jefferson S2........................McMinnville 58 Jefferson 41..................Central Catholic 32 Jefferson 51..............................Longview 58 Jefferson 49...............................Gresham 40 Jefferson 36.............................Milwaukie 51 Jefferson 55......................Klamath Falls 54 Jefferson 40......................Klamath Falls 45 Jefferson 55.............................Milwaukie 63 Jefferson 44................................Benson 26 Jefferson 54............................Lincoln 51 Jefferson 59.............................Roosevelt 36 Jefferson 56..............................Franklin 69 Jefferson 56.............................Cleveland 54 Jefferson 70............................Washington 52 Jefferson 69.................................Grant 57 Jefferson 53................................Benson 41 Jefferson 51...............................Lincoln 57 Jefferson 79.............................Roosevelt 51 Jefferson 60..............................Franklin 49 Jefferson 59.............................Cleveland 68 Jefferson 72............................Washington 56 Jefferson 62.................................Grant 69 Jefferson 45..............................Franklin 46 120 Robert Hull C-Squad Coach THE 1955 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM Jerry Anderson C. Baseball Coach Due to the early publication of the yearbook, there have been no league games played as of the time this article was written. This year's club is rated by many to be a strong con- tender in the P. I. L. race. A big factor for this is our strong hitting and very fleet outfield of Harold Noell, Grant Jackson, and Bob Berreman. In the infield it's Jerry Spivey at first, Pete Ward at second, Clarence Hall, third. Bob Jacobs, short stop, and Chuck Rask behind the plat e. Pitching seems to be the big quest ion mark in the Demo nine, but big things can be expected from John Peterson and Roger Thompson. Other pitchers are Fred Stewart and Larry DeLap. 126 THE 1955 VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM ' JPgMl?llls2nggSH!jlfe8 Vll ft jl 11 III vv' ' i cH John Peterson Pitcher Jim Stafford 1st Base Bob Johnson 3rd Base Vic Schwan Pitcher Roger Thomson Pitcher Jim Davis Catcher Fred Stewart Pitcher Bill Scarborough 2nd Base Larry Delap Pitcher Chuck Jacques Left Field Dennis Grande Catcher Gary Hergert Center Field JUNIOR VARSITY BASEBALL FRONT ROW: G. Huey Hatten had the fastest recorded time for high school entrants in the 100-yard dash. Other first-place awards went to Ken Stodd, Jack Thomas, A1 Klein, Howard Hogan, Jim Renfro, Dick Sax- ton, Jim Coy, Dick Johnson, and Harold Nelson. In the City Relays Jefferson's A squad placed second, the B squad tied for first place, and the C squad took first. At this meet the Jeff trio of A1 Klein, Bill Davidson, and Dick Saxton set a new record of 135 feet 5 inches in shot put. Other first places were won by Dick Johnson, Paul Stangeland, Jim Renfro, and L. C. Kelly. This year’s team was composed of many juniors, and with the wealth of material from the B team, next year's team shows great promise. 132 THE 1955 VARSITY TRACK TEAM Pick .Johnson 100. 220. 880 yd. Those of us already in this club invite you to join us—if you, too, are fortunate enough to be the father (or male guardian) of a Jefferson student. This is a friendly, informal club. Our rules are few and flexible. At the same time, the club is proud of its record for “getting things done when called upon by students, faculty or the community. The Jeff Dads Club is not affiliated with any other organization. Often, however, we've assisted other groups, but we glory in our own independence as a purely J.H.S. organization.
