The theme of the 1954 Spectrum is based on one mythical member of the Jefferson Student Body who is unusually ac- tive in all phases of high school life. This character, whom you met in the cartoon on the pre- vious page, is an extremely cosmopolitan individual who takes pride and pleasure in his scholastic, social, and athletic prowess. On the basis of these abilities and his amazing personality he has been chosen to lead you on a guided tour through the book. His job will be to introduce you photographically to the people and places that are Jefferson. The Spectrum staff knows him as MAT , (Man About Town), and they accord you the same pleasure.

The prestige of Jefferson High School may come from the fondness and genuine respect that the students and faculty share for the school. Only a mutual interest such as this love could produce such strong feeling of comradeship between students, faculty, and alumni. This pride, manifested in many fields, has carried Jeff to vic- tories in the field of athletics. Jefferson is also proud of its busy and varied social schedule. At the Youth Center students may dance, play ping-pong, shuffleboard, checkers, or just plain talk. Then, of course, there are the casual, semi-formal, and formal dances that dot the social calendar. Jefferson also is proud of its academic achievement exemplified by the numer- ous scholarships and many honors Jefferson students receive. Jefferson owes a debt of appreciation for the fine coopera- tion and many services of the Parent Teacher Association and the Dad's Club. But the real backbone of the school is tradition. It is out of these smaller sparate entities that the great Jefferson tradition has evolved. Jefferson and tradition go hand in hand. . . . This Spectrum is thereby dedicated to the fine traditions that are Jefferson High School. DEDICATION
