sy '[ JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL staff presents PORTLAND, OREGON Next year Jefferson will be different, particularly in two de- partments, the Live Wire office and the physics classes. The smile and friendly greeting of Mr. Walter Wood will be miss- ing, but not forgotten, for Mr. Wood is retiring after spend- ing thirty-two years teaching at Jeff. After graduation from college Mr. Wood decided to be- come a teacher instead of entering the business world. Asked about his reason for doing this and also his reason for remain- ing so long in teaching, he replied, My incentive was and has been my love of young folks. Being a modest person, Mr. Wood will never tell you about the activity of which he is most proud: The Live Wire office sold more than $100,000 worth of war bonds during World War II. Mr. Wood amazingly keeps his genial good humor even with all the nerve-jangling situations which arise from run- ning an $80,0CO-a-year business. That much money last year passed through the Live Wire Office. After retiring he plans to pursue his two hobbies of hunt- ing and fishing. When a new and spacious Jefferson high school is built upon these grounds wouldn't it be appropriate to honor the memory of this man who has spent his lifetime teaching here? What would you think of the Walter Wood Science Wing? It would be a fitting tribute and a living memorial. A ship is o missive thing and the passenger variety is usually filled to overflow- _ig with happy, carefree passengers. Therefore, the choice of a ship theme for the j 1952 Spectrum was obvious. Jefferson high school, too, is mossive, and for nine Y months of the year, it, too, is filled with passengers, though not always happy and •J carefree ones. Now that you've received your possport, let us take you on a picture-tour of a year's ourney in the S. S. Jefferson. c 1 V LOG OF THE S. S. It has produced men and women who ore now the leaders in their respective vocations. Its athletic teams have won so many championships thot the very name Jefferson is now synonymous with being tops in the sports world. Our school is noted for its democratic spirit and is very fittingly named after one of our nation's most famous leaders, Thomas Jefferson. He, during his lifetime, advanced the causes which we the students of Jefferson High School are now try- ing to achieve in our own small way. Every present and future Jeffersonian has a greot tradition to live up to, for they who follow in the footsteps of the alumni must at all times strive to reach os high a goal as have others in the past. We of the Spectrum staff feel it is now time to stop, think of the past and plan for a greater future. 9 ITHIN the hearts of every- one there is a pride which comes with the knowledge that we belong to the some school from which so many successful people have graduated. To be successful we do not have to be outstanding in a particular field; but we must live a good life, must be considered of high moral worth and must be respected by those with whom we associate. In other words a good citi- zen is a successful person. All of us can be good citizens. Today the responsibility for continuing Jefferson's reputation is being placed di- rectly upon the shoulders of you graduates. By your deeds and octions our school is measured. Your outstanding achievements and your good citizenship will be reflected in the glory of the school. We who remain ot Jefferson know that throughout life you will maintain Jeffer- son's High Standards. Mr. C. L. Jones Our Captain 10 Jefferson High School offers to eoch student the opportunities to secure the fundamentals of o fine education. The student body organization and activities permit each person to participate in democratic cooperative undertakings. Each may develop individual abilities and talents while serv- ing the school and his fellow classmates. Friend- liness is the keynote of all relationships. The Jefferson Spirit that becomes part of our very be- ing is the culmination of our efforts. —Miss Dorothy Flegel Jefferson High School aims to provide a four-yeor period of satisfying experiences that will serve as an effective background for another period of up to fifty years of successful living in this or another community. The understanding, the responsibility, self control and spirit of cooperation thot are devel- oped day by day in this and similar institutions will surely determine the limitations of that life. It is my sincere hope that the present high school generation will be the one to realize that by careful planning and vigorous follow through, the future can be made. —Mr. L. C. RALPH BASSETT Sow lojV CovrwVjf PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Now thot graduation has become a reality instead of a dream and our high school career at Jef- ferson is at an end we pause to evaluate what we, the senior class of 1952, have accomplished os members of Jefferson's society. We like to think thot in some small way we have added to the wonderful spirit and tradition that is Jefferson. We are proud and fortunate to have had the opportunity to accept its principles of democracy and citizenship. The world before us is war-torn and unsettled, but armed with the valuable experiences, scholastic and athletic, that Jefferson has offered to us, we face the future with confidence. We wish to thank sincerely the administrative staff, the counselors and the teachers, whose guidance and untiring patience will never be forgotten. RON PUE. Class Motto: Today we work, for tomorrow is ours. Class Colors: Green and white. CLASS SONG Music: Halls of Ivy Words by Mary Ellen Kennedy Our Jeff we'll all remember As we live through future years; The life-long friends we've made here, And the joys, the laughs, the tears. Her name will linger always, Though we have bid adieu, With mem'ries of her standards And her colors gold and blue. Some day a hush will fall. The footsteps of us all Will echo down Jeff halls and fade away. But as we sadly start Our journeys far apart, A beat from every heart with Jeff will stay. From immortal halls we part now, And our voices disappear. But through the years we'll sing our praise To Jeff our school so dear. 24 1 tBFm Dorothy Arnett Lent GeoVo College Yvonne Ashcroft Irringtcn Hi Mh College Morsholl Atherton Columbia Regal C: ;qc Glceto Bornes Kennedy College Eugene Becker Verrun Hi Note ForHend Unirenity Janice Allison Kenfo Grtfco College Peter Allen Woedlovn Rego! These seven candidates for Student Body President were presented to the voters. There is no record os to whether they kissed any babies. Out of the mouths of babes . . . and boys came the golden tones of our ensemble. 46 Ted Hollock had the questions and more times than not, the Quiz 'Em On the Air team had the answers. These well-informed citizens, tutored by Miss Gilstrap, were the outstanding team in the city. When two beautiful blondes get to- gether, what do they talk about? Other blondes. These two are Darlene Kramer, given special mention elsewhere in this volume, and Gloria Krieger, of Jefferson and Hollywood. Glamorous Gloria was here for an assembly in the fall. Coach Tom DeSylvia FOOTBALL Jefferson's grid machine this year produced three all- city players and three honorable mentions. Max Ander- son, who played offensive end, was placed at tackle on the first-string all-city team; Darrell Coulson, tackle, made the second team; Roger Williams, halfback made the second team and is one of only two members on the second team who have another season to play. Hon- orable mentions were Bruce Harding, end; Tack Goodell and Dick Gilbert, guards. Of Jefferson's regulars only Bruce Harding will return in the line, with Roger Williams and Dallas Renfro in the bockfield. The Democrats this year were a spirited lot of fellows who didn't let down once during a game. They had the tough luck of facing the best teams one after the other at the first of the season. They improved greatly toward the season's end and felt that if given another chance they could beat any team in the league. The Games: In the pre-season game the Demos lost to Vancouver on their field 33 to 2). Scoring—Hammerly 6, Anderson 6, Penn 6, Weibe 2. Jeff drew Grant in the Jamboree and led 7 to 6 at the end of the first quarter, but lost the qame by a 27 to 7 score. Scoring—Pfeifer 6, Weibe 1. A fired-up Jeff team come back to walk all over fav- ored Washington 19 to 0. Playing his greatest gome of the year, Dick Malget was voted Player of the Week. Scoring—Hammerly 6, Malget 6, Anderson 6, Weibe 1. In losing to Roosevelt, who was favored to take the city title, the Demos held them to their lowest scoring effort of the year. Final score was 13 to 0. The Lincoln Cards taking advantage of the breaks thrown their way edged the Jeffmen 27 to 20. The game itself was voted the Game of the year. Scoring — Anderson 6, Hammerly 6, McKeen 6, Weibe 2. Fighting mad by the loss to Lincoln the Demos bounced Cleveland 20 to 6 on the home field. Scoring—Williams 6, Hammerly 12, Weibe 2. Benson offered little opposition in foiling 38 to 6. In winning this one every player on the Demo roster saw action. Scoring—Hammerly 6, Burch 6, Kraft 6, Wingo 6, Williams 12, Weibe 2. Franklin was rated to give the Jeffmen a close battle but when the dust had cleared the Quakers were beaten at the tune of 34 to 0. Scoring—Williams 12, McKeen 6, Harding 6, Jack- son 6, Weibe 3, Burch 1. In a post-season game Jefferson aaain played Van- couver with both teams using only players who would be eligible next fall. Even without the services of stand- out halfback Roger Williams the Jeff locals downed the Trappers 27 to 6. Scoring—McKeen 12, Renfro 6, Jackson 6, Weibe 3. Jefferson ended the season in a three way tie for third place with Lincoln and Washington. The Jayvee's this year compiled a 4 won, 3 lost, 1 tied record. The Frosh had a 2 won, 2 lost, 1 tied record. 80 Renfro, Bock Weibe, Center Jim Wilson, Tockle g Les Wierson, 83 Russell Grotjohn.Tockle Hall, Center rzxxx. Z22ZZXXX B SQUAD Bock Row: D. Saxton, C. Although they didn't come through as predicted they did fight their way to a third place finish after a hectic three game losing streak. The Demos started the season on a four-four pre-season record, by beating Salem and Marsh- field once each and Gresham twice, they also lost one to Salem, and to Marshfield and two to Central Catholic. Jeff played Benson in the first league game, win- ning by a 57-39 score. But in the second game they took a 71-50 beating from Lincoln. Last yeor's All-Stater Max Anderson, saw limited action in this game due to a touch of the flu. As the sea- son progressed the team gained in strength by avenging previous defeats by Roosevelt and Grant. In league play only Cleveland and Lincoln were able to beat the Demos twice, the addition of Eddie Graves from the Jayvces aided the varsity in win- ning four out of their last six games of the season. Graves, a sophomore, also played varsity football. Max Anderson again repeated as an All-City performer, being placed on the first team by both the Oregonian and Journal newspapers. Big Max led the league in foul shots with 90, and was second to Holbrook in total points, scoring 240 with the average of 19 per game, Blake Elliott was placed on the second team by both papers. Blake scored 53 of his 193 total on foul shots, which placed him fourth behind Davis of Washington and Hol- brook of Lincoln in the foul shot department. The Junior Varsity coached by Tom DeSylvia, was second in its league with an 11-3 record. Two of these losses were to Roosevelt and the other one to Cleveland. The Baby Demos, under coach Adraen Douglass, wound up the season in third place in their league, they had a record of 4 wins against 3 losses. The leading scorers were Ron Timmerman with 65, Bob Barrett with 50 and John Hepburn with 30. 87 XECCCC B BASEBALL Bock Row: L Hodges, N. Hanson, E. Aaberg, B. Johnson, D. Kerr, J. Haase, B. The Demos placed second in the city meet behind Grant. The only first taken by Jeff was by the broad jump team which consisted of Dallas Renfro, Phil Clifford and Eddie Graves. Those who placed second were the 880 team (Bob Burbock, Nathan Reddith, Dallas Renfro and John Eichom), shuttle hurdles (Dallos Renfro, Doug Basham, Bob Burback); two-mile (Richard Neal, Tom Gill, Dan Delano, Den Them); high jump (Mox Anderson, Don Savo, Tommy Voight); shot put (Mike Bogdan, Dorrell Coulscn, Dick Gilbert). In ccmpetitton at the state relays at Hoyword Field in Eugene, Jefferson nosed out Salem for fourth place with 24 1 3 points to 24. The Woldorf-cooched Jeffmen mode their best showing in the broad jump, plocing second ond in the 440, placing third. They placed fifth in the 880, two-mile, high jump, shot put, and the pole vault. She was so sweety so full of love, That comes with God’s own grace. She loved her Lord and gave Him praise For all He’d done for her; And never failed her voice to raise In witnessing and prayer. She only wished her life to give, A sacrifice to Him Who died that others still may live, And sing with cherubim. The praise and glory to the One Who was for sinners slain, And now the battle ere is won Her life was not in vain. Thanks to the Lord who gives us breath, Thanks to the Lord who conquered death, Thanks to the Lord who molds our will To be obedient, silent, and still. This is a friendly, informal club. Our rules arc few and flexible. At the same time, the club is proud of its record for “getting things done” when called upon by students, faculty or the community. The Jeff Dads Club is not affiliated with any other organization. Often, however, we’ve assisted other groups, but we glory in our own independence as a purely J.H.S. organization. First, last and always we’re for Jefferson, its students, teachers, parents and friends. It is your right — and your duty — to share in this club’s fellowship, its work and fun. It will cost you only $1 a year. Come on, fellow Dad, and join us. • MEETINGS The Jeff Dods meet the fourth Tuesday of eoch month at 8 p.m. in the school.
