PORTLAND, OREGON At this time every year, it is the task of the Spectrum edi- tors to write a preface We could start out by saying that this annual is the best ever produced at Jefferson, which, as could be expected, we naturally think is true. We've tried to bring to you in pictures the everyday school life and some of the night life at Jeff during the past year. Pictures of the dances, sports events, classroom scenes and many of the other activities that Jeffersonians enjoy are highlighted in this year's Spectrum. We have tried to combine these many colorful events in a way that would prove to be interesting and enjoy- able for everyone. Under the able leadership of this year's student-body cab- inets, aided by their advisors, we have enjoyed more fully the privileges of student government that ever before. This co- operation between students, teachers and administrators, working together as a team, has created an air of friendliness which is present at all of our events. We have tried to sug- gest this feeling in our selection of pictures. We hope that, in years to come, as you thumb through these pages, they will help you to relive the many wonderful times you had during the 1949-50 school year. t am Officers: Vern Severoncc, President; John Clork, Vice-President; Wolter Bordy, Secretory; Henry Elfcrs, Trcosurer. JEFF DAD'S CLUB The Jeff Dad's Club is really a going concern, one that's not only an enthusiastic booster, but one that does something for the school. They worked at our football games, did more than their share toward getting the school levy passed, com- pleted an excellent survey of our building's needs and presented their findings to the School Board, and chaperoned frequently at the Youth Center. Thanks for a swell job. Dads! JEFF P.T.A. This year has seen the Jeff P.T.A. grow to an all-time high of 760 members, including one hun- dred per cent of the school's faculty. These mem- bers have chaperoned dances, provided a full tuition scholarship, and helped several needy stu- dents to pay medical and dental bills. Jeff couldn't be the fine school it is without the help of this old friend. P.T.A. 80ARD Row 1: B Kurilo. Mrs Dolbow, Trcosurer, Mrs Bumgorner, Presi- dent. Not only were advancements made in social affairs, but also in indi- vidual personalities and the re- spect of others' rights. The stu- dents have cooperated to the ut- most with spirit and service to suport their student body govern- ment. S E N 1 0 R C L A S S 0 F F 1 C E R S The Senior Closs activities kept us very busy this year. In order to become better acquainted we began the year with a calss acquainted we began the year with a class parties, a ski trip, and a scholarship dance. A fitting tribute to a successful year was our Senior Prom, an event long to be re- membered With these activities to look back on w,e know every senior will never forget his Closs of 50 . OTTO LEISTIKO President VIRGINIA OLIN Vice-President MARY KENDIEP. Secretary PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Four years hove passed; it's hard to believe. It seems as if it were only yesterday that we were wandering through these halls as Freshmen, not knowing a soul and feeling very small among all the rest of the students. Remember your first date, walking hesitat- ingly up to her door, not knowing whether to knock or run home? Wow what an ordeal. And before we knew it, we were sophomores, then juniors, now seniors. It all passed much too quickly. The games, the dances, the parties, all those wonderful times we had together are almost over. We of the graduating class are all proud to have been class- mates of the many fine athletes who have added so much to the rich tradition that is Jefferson. Each and everyone of us deem it a privilege to have lived and gone to school in the United States. Where else in the world do you have such fine schools and so many opportunities just for the tak- ing? All of us have a responsibility to fulfill, to the community and, for that matter, to the world. We can never thank our facul ty, counselors, and principals enough for their generous and untiring pa- tience. They hove helped us get something of a con- cept of what the world of tomorrow will hold, when we will be the congressmen, the mechanics, the nurses and not just the high school kid next door. Otto Leistiko, Jr. CLASS SONG Music adapted from the Finale of Brahm's Symphony No. 1 in C minor. We hail thee, salute thee our Alma Mater Jefferson To hold in our souls thy instruction and thy guidance. We pledge our hearts, we pledge our love through heartoche ond through fun. Thy mem'ry a torch to light our paths and live in our remembrance. 'Tis sweet to recoil all the golden moments spent here; We'll set forth to cast our own coins in the well of success. Lincoln jumped to a first quarter lead at the jamboree, but, on the following Monday Pat Curtis, Ted Meier, Dean Hostetter and Barry Jackson proceeded to overcome that score and give the Demos a 29-6 win. Kaye Booth sparked the visiting Franklin Quakers to a 35-0 win over the inexperienced Democrats. Frank Krause, Red Moore and Don Ford each contributed six points to the Quaker cause. Dave Starbuck led the Cleveland Indians to a 7-6 upset over the local football crew. Starbuck fell on o Jeff fumble in the end zone for the touchdown. Brethauer tallied for Waldorf's crew while Sutter booted the conversion. Denny Bell threw touchdown passes to Neil Anderson, Duane Helbig and Roy Langford as Roosevelt trounced the Democrats 21-6. After driving downfield via passes to Coley Cook and Tom Keele, Bob Bogue stepped back and reeled one off to Brethauer, who scored for the blue 'n gold standing up. Meier tossed a 25 yard aerial to Keele in the end zone to give the Jeff men a 6-0 win over the Colonials of Washington in the season's finale. Coach George Hibbard's cage squad went through pre- season play defeating Redmond, Bend, and Salem while rolling over Battleground and Longview each twice. The only pre- season loss was to Salem. Snow postponed the opening league basketball game, but after a delayed start, the Demos, led by Ron Fundingslond, who played the first three games with a cast on his right hand, made a fast break that rolled over Franklin, Washington, Grant, Lincoln, and Cleveland twice. Roosevelt and Benson won one and lost one to the Demos in league play. Max Anderson, 6 foot 5 inch sophomore center, showed plenty of class in providing the locals with the needed back- board strength. Ron Fundingslond set a new league scoring record of 222 points, breaking the old one by 9 counters. Don Scott, sturdy forward, displayed a fine set shot, al- though he was never a high scorer. Quintin Raymond and Fuds represented the Jeffmen on the all-city teams while Earl Enos just missed nomination due to illness in the lost two games of the season. Down at the state tourney in Eugene, ''Fuds led the Blue and Gold with 24 points to a 52-21 victory over Dallas. Salem defeated the Demos 41-38 in an overtime. Fuds played with a splint on his thumb as the Grants Pass Cavemen dropped the Demos from the tournament with a 42-36 win. JACK PETERSON, MGR.
