The staff has endeavored to bring forth a modern note to distinguish this book from others and to afford the readers much enjoyment. Also the staff wishes to acknowledge the help given by the following groups of people in the completion of this book: Art work: Miss Bergsvick, Gordon Jones, J. C. Taylor and Aubrey Chapman. These three boys, under the direc- tion of Miss Bergsvick, have contributed all the art work for The Spectrum. Typing: Josephine McPherson, Margaret Lammi, Mary Moyer and Gertrude Martenson. These four girls have done, in their own time, the typing work for The Spectrum. The staff wishes to take this opportunity to express their gratitude for the splendid work done by both these departments. DEDICATION Mr. Jenkins, we have nothing concrete to offer you that could compensate for the help and advice that you have given us throughout our high school life. When we came here as Freshmen, yours was the hand that guided our hesitant steps, and, as we progressed through the four swiftly passing years, we came to know you as a friend and counsellor. Through life we shall remember you as a lover of good sportsmanship and a leader toward high ideals. Therefore, we, the June Class of 1935, take great pleasure in dedicating to you, this, our Spectrum. MR. BOSSERMAN We, the members of the June class of nineteen hundred and thirty-five, wish to express our gratitude to one who has had much influence throughout our high school years. Our first contact with him was in the Junior Assemblies in which he presided. Later we came to him with our problems which, though often trivial, were treated with the utmost interest and concern. As Vice - principal of Jefferson High School he has set an example of man- hood which we have learned to respect and shall cherish as we go on to other fields. We thank Mr. Bosser- man for his cooperation and we hope that we will be able to live up to the high standards he has established for us. MISS FLEGEL During our first three years at Jefferson, some of us were fortunate enough to have had Miss Flegel as teacher, or we knew her as faculty adviser of the Preppers' Club; but during the past year we have all learned to know and love her in her new position as Dean of Girls and as Girls' League adviser. It is for this last year in which she has given us so much personal attention that we wish to thank her most, and we know that she will continue to be an inspiration to the girls of Jefferson. CLASS RECORD In the fall of 1931, the June '35 Class entered Jefferson High School as innocent freshmen ready to begin their interesting adventure of four years. What an interesting and exciting one it turned out to be ! When we first began the organization of our class on November 9, 1934, with the helpful guidance of Mr. Jenkins, we felt that our high school course thus far had not been in vain, but had now reached its most stimulating point. On November 23 and December 12 we chose the following class officers: President..............Dick Crombie Vice-President.........Irene Hegeberg Secretary..............Margaret Lammi Treasurer..............Bob Bailey Sergeant-at-Arms.......Jay Mercer The newly-organized class soon decided on the pins—symbols signifying the success- ful completion of four years of study, which everyone proudly displayed. The Spectrum staff was chosen at a meeting on December 18, consisting of the following: Strickland Gillilan, editor, and Jennie Fredericksen, assistant editor. Jennie, on account of illness, was unable to carry on in her position and was replaced by Amy Jane Reichert, and later Jennie was made circulation manager. The class photographs aroused a great deal of interest, and the exchange of them among classmates proved that Jefferson had presented us with numerous friends. The first class dance was held on February 20, and several others followed with good results. The class was very proud to have among its members one who was able to help with the clever designing of the announcements. Gordon Jones, who sketched the statue of Jefferson used on the front of the announcements, did much to impress upon our minds a pleasant memory of Jefferson High School. Chinese pink, nile green and powder blue were chosen as the class colors on April 23. The class decided on This far and farther as the class motto. With a splendid cast, a good Shakespearean comedy, Twelfth Night, was pre- sented as the class play on May 10 and 11. The school year is now drawing to a close, and everyone in the class is anxiously looking forward to the Senior Assembly, Baccalaureate, Commencement, and the Senior Prom to round out the activities of a pleasant four-year period. Pose Iwenty-six THE PRESIDENT'S FAREWELL We are the members of the Class of June ’35. Now we are Seniors, but we have not always been Seniors: we have been Juniors; we have been Sophomores; yes, we have even been Freshmen. But, we are just as proud of having been Freshmen as of being Seniors, for after all, our senior year stands for those other three years of hard work. It is our chance to show how much we have gained during our former three years of study. During our first term we spent our time finding ourselves in a new world, a very interesting world indeed. We shall never forget our first glimpses of those test tubes in the chemistry laboratory, that skeleton in the physiology room, the beautiful work in the art room; nor shall we forget those first assemblies or that first football game. Each of us visualized for himself a place in that world and enthusiastically began to put himself in that place. Now we may appraise our efforts. Some of us are athletes, some musicians, some dramatists, some scholars, some artists, and some leaders in school organizations. Each of us now has a definite place in the school. However, we are beginning to realize that we shall lose those places too soon; our graduation night is coming uncomfortably close. We are not pretending that we are sorry to graduate, for qraduation is one of the things for which we have striven ever since we entered Jefferson. In fact, we have ever looked forward to our grad- uation—until this last week, but this week we realize that for only a few more days shall we be members of Jefferson High School, that for only a few more days shall we see those faces that we have learned to love and admire. We do not say that we are sorry to graduate, but we do say that it puts a lump in our throats to leave those old friends, both teachers and students, with whom we have worked every day. Soon, having graduated, we shall again find ourselves in a new world, the world of hard knocks, in which we must again find our places. It is there that we shall be very appreciative of those elements in our characters, of those talents which have been brought out in our high school training. So it seems proper for us, the June ’35 Class, to give our sincere expressions of deep gratitude to Mr. Jenkins and his faculty for the careful guidance they have given us. With the exception of Burnie Selberg, Carl Burtch and Ellsworth Jones, the whole team was from the 1934 junior team. The Demos took second place in the Portland Interscholastic League, and also captured runner-up honors in the state championship tourney at Salem. Jefferson started out well, taking a good percentage of her pre-season games, and winning the first two league tilts from Commerce and Grant, then dropping two in a row to Lincoln and Washington. The Lincoln game was no surprise, but the Colonials offered a real upset. The Demos were destined to drop another game to the high- stepping Mechanics of Benson before the first half of the season was gone. The Jeff- men staged such a rally in the closing minutes of this contest that many a husky pipe- bender breathed a sigh of relief when the whistle ended the game. Jeff completed the season in fourth place with Benson, Lincoln and Franklin in front. The first two Jeff games in the last canto of the season were both upsets. The Stenogs tossed in a stick of TNT by defeating the Democrats 22 to 16 on the Commerce maples. The Jeffmen were ahead throughout the game until the last period when the Pen- pushers made a tremendous rally both offensively and defensively. The next upset was the Lincoln game, played during the same week as the Commerce tilt. The men in the know doped Lincoln to take tne contest easily and Jeff to win only by a fluke with a very slim margin. The score was 24 to 8 in the Jeffmen's favor when the final gun was fired. This game started for the Demos a long hard climb to the top in which they won nine games straight from such teams as the city champions and some of the toughest quintets in the state. The next to fall before the slowly-rising Democrats were the Roosevelt Teddies and the Quakers of Franklin. The Jeff team took these two contests in great style, defeating the Rough Riders 50 to 20 and the Quakers 39 to 17. On the following Tuesday afternoon Jefferson showed her true colors by defeating the Benson Techmen, later crowned city chamos, in one of the most jittery games of the season. The Demos won by a score of 16 to 14, a bare two-point margin. Six days later Jefferson played Lincoln in the play-off tilt for second place and a trip to Salem. At the end of the half it looked as though Lincoln had second place cinched, but Jeff came back and won by one point, 19 to 18. In the state meet at the capitol city, Jefferson took Umapine, Ashland and Salem Ashland being the only one to give the Jeffmen a real battle. Then came the Astoria game for the state championship. The Demos just couldn’t keep up the teriffic pace they had been hitting for the past three weeks, and bowed to the Fishermen, 46 to 26. The Jefferson players captured quite a few individual honors at the tournament, among which were tne following: Jake Hergert was named all-state forward and took the high-scoring honors of the meet Jay Mercer was named guard on the second team; Bill Baughman and Ellsworth Jones were given honorable mention. Burnie Selberg was unanimously chosen captain for 1936 at the close of the season. The Jefferson junior quintet also made an excellent showing for the school by win- ning the championship in the junior section for the second straight year. Coach Gherke expects some good material for next year’s varsity squad from Coach Knudsen’s champs. The members of the team are as follows: John Gornick, Phillip Gornick, Gordon Landeen, Henry Burns, Elmer Helenus, Rudy Nelson, Don Kellas, Ernest Sonneberg, Alex Kriek, Bob Darrow and Orville Berry. The outstanding players for the Demo Babes were the Gornick brothers, John and Phillip, and Gordon Landeen. Something new in the field of basketball at Jefferson, the freshman team, was intro- duced this year by Coach George Emigh. The frosh, though of course inexperienced, having played only on grammar school teams previously, managed to win five out of nine games played. They staged contests with such schools as Oregon City. Most of these fellows will play on the junior squad next spring. • Page forty-five Wenesdy, Mae 3, 1902 | CORN CENTER COURIER S Vol. 19355391 Price: No sense SIEZE ALL, HERE’S ALL --• .------- | CORN CENTER CAURIER STAF R Assistant Eddytore O Socyety Eddytore B Sports Eddytore E Chief Reporter R Printor T Proff reedor A News Eddytore C Biznez Manajer R Art Eddytore E Cirkilashon Manajer A Advertizing Manajer S Correspondance Manajer O Forcn News Manajer N EDDITORYAL Make the Kantry Saf For Lil White Mice Who dose not luv a swet lil white mice? The theme predominate throughout this book, as shown by the art work, is freedom in its many aspects. The ideal of liberty has been, and always will be precious to American youth. To some of us the following may suggest our personal interpretation of this rich heritage: Ex Libris existence. May our stream of consciousness ever be Liberty, our courage in the face of adversity that of the Eagle, and may botn be symbols of our Tr=,% l Among peoples of this world love of homeland is a deep rreedom Or ravel anj source|ess soring that, welling within us of America, and enhanced by the realization that we are free to travel and not bound by inhibitions to our nation, deepens, broadens, and is made more lasting. Man has endured ostracism, persecution, even death, e 3 n dnj dS usua||y remained unshaken mentally in the surety of his religious beliefs. Dynasties have crumpbled, wars have exacted their awful tolls, and still man is left haloed in the glory of his faith. Religion, a sedative for his racked mind and body in time of strife, a joy in the fleeting days of peace, forms the very fibres of his spiritual thoughts. Every man nas a belief, vast or finite, transcendent or languid, and to this belief should belong the right of free exercise, a right which has been held by the United States of America since its conception and which will continue to be held, surely, until men and govenrments crumble into the dust whereof they sprang. Educate, be educated, and let no American girl or rreedom or education boy jgnore hjs privilege to learn and be taught from an infinity of knowledge that he may, one day, be great; but be it known that the deter- mined growth of his greatness lies in him, and he alone is responsible for his attainments, for the right and the opportunity are his.
