Jeff the 0nce-over You don't volunteer for this work, if what you want is a vacation or a rest. explained Dr. Jack M. Bowman. chairman of the North Central Association QNCAD. Dr. Bowman referred to the job of an NCA team member involved in the inspection and subsequent rating of various U.S. schools. As an NCA member, .lefferson was visited by a I9-member team of representatives the week of October 4 thru October 7. l977. This evaluation, while perhaps fussed over by some. created hardly a ripple in the natural flow of events around the school. On the contrary, both Dr. Bowman and Jeff's own administrators noticed the highly cooperative attitude of the student body. We were surprised at the good behavior and pleased in the amount of interest of Jeff students. said Dr. Bowman. ln addition, Principal William Levering broadcasted his thanks to students a short time later. adding that he hoped students would Keep up the good work. Some areas that impressed the NCA team were Jeff's broad curriculum, its overall well-qualified teachers, the Guidance Department, and the school's outstanding facilities. The basic curriculum here is the same as other schools, said Dr. Bowman, however, Jeff is unique. for instance, in its concentration in such areas as art or music. Furthermore, Dr. Bowman pointed out, Your radio and television center is one of the few operating in Indiana. Besides their thorough inspection of Jeff's every detail, the NCA team, composed of volunteers from the ranks of teachers, counselors and administrators, maintained a rather rigorous schedule. During their stay, members arose around 6:30 a.m. Their evaluation, including visitation of various classes, commenced at 8:00 a.m. and continued throughout the school day. Committee meetings and discussion of their findings filled team members' evenings. By midnight, many of us were quite ready for bed. admitted Dr. Bowman. The final task of the evaluating team '7' I Above: Although they worked vigorously, the NCA team did find time for some pIay at a pre-evaluation tea in their honor. Someplace, Sometime The Gallop. That much-anticipated, highly publicized. unsurpassed fexcept maybe by the Promb. social event of the year!!! After weeks of planning by members of the Bronchoette Sunshine Society, Jeff's l977 Gallop finally became a reality on November ll As one of Jeff's new semi-formal dances of the year, the Gallop was a rather nice treat for all concerned. Former Levi addicts donned their Saturday night best. Evening wear ranged from Cliana gowns and tunics for girls, to three-piece suits and sports jackets for guys. Even the old, familiar, neon-lit cafeteria looked unlike its usual self, with around-the-world scenes, soft lights, a bandstand, and flowers. Instead of the usual mess hall tables, cloth-covered tables for two added to the romantic air of the evening. As many as 250 couples attended the dance, most arriving between 9:00 and 9:30, some later. Dancing, picture-taking, and conversation filled the next few hours. At ll:OO, Sunshine Society President Mary Jane Gerst crowned Jim Mayer Gallop King with a kiss. Mayer's court consisted of fellow seniors: Kent Broach, Phil Habig, Kevin Clark, Keith Reisinger, Jody Plant, Ed Cramer, and Russ Neilan. Next, the band, Chameleon, invited couples to dance once more by playing the obviously favorite slow music. The night to remember became just that, a memory, as the clock struck midnight. Yet, as the theme of the dance reminded students, they had all just been Someplace and had Sometime And only for seniors did l2:OO mark the last Gallop of all. For the others. there would always be next year. Upper right: Gallop King candidates, clockwise from back left: Kevin Clark. Kent Broach, Keith Reisinger, Ed Cramer, Jody Plant, Phil Habig.
