Because of the enlarged demands for more knowledge and training in the fields of science, mathematics, and lan- guages, we have raised our academic standards. If we are to keep our freedom through the increasing crises of history, we, the future leaders of the nation, must come to rely more and more on education. We at leg are fortunate for the large z'a- riety of courses offered us. It is the duty of every hi gh school student to make the most of his opportunity for free edu- cation in our democracy. Realizing this and taking adrantage of its full Value are of great importance to each of us as citizens of this great coun- try of ours-America! Page 11

P11 gr' 12 We are taught our When the subject of classes is being dis- cussed, a familiar question usually arises-why do we have to study so much English? We all know, or should know, that the English lan- guage is the hardest and most complicated of all languages to master. It takes more than just an hour, more than just a week, more than just a year to master it. It takes a lifetime. We need to practice correct sentence structure, correct usage, correct punctuation, and correct spelling at all times. English grammar, required for graduation, is offered to all in our sophomore and junior years. Literature is offered one semester of each year. Composition, which is for all students who wish to go to college, is taken in the senior year. Speech courses are chosen as electives by many. Iournalism, a course required for a Boost- er Staff member, is an essential if one intends to go into newspaper work. There are General English courses for those planning a business career, and Remedial courses for those needing special help. Time and energy must be put forth on this subject to prepare us for the next step to our places in the world, be it college or a business. Mr. Hopkins explains the function of the Booster to an eager journalism class. 3
