athematics Department How do you feel about the square of the hypote- nuse? parabolas? isosceles triangles? and two plus two being four? If youlre interested. youive come to the right place-the math department. lt is here that we are given training in not only highly in- volved mathematical science. but also in an accuracy and challenge that will serve us in an infinite number of ways. Algebra I and II, the beginning academic course offered at Jeff, is a study of the basic principles of algebra. the unknown number. its derivations. and its solutions. For further continuation of this branch. courses of advanced and college algebra are offered. Plane geometry is the college preparatory course which deals with theorems, propositions. and proofs and is taken in the second year. Solid geometry is the study ofthe third dimension. an unusual concept of math. taken in the junior year and taught by Miss Seever. Trigonometry. the science of surveyance. is taken in the senior year and is taught by Mr. Kenzler. To sharpen our skills in computing long lists of figures. a commercial course of math is taught by Miss Seever. We have a strong. capable math department in both the junior and senior high. Our junior high department consists of Mr. David Bonham. Mr. Ern- est Deagan. Miss Ruth Sexton. and Mr. Leonard Walke1'. all of whom teach both algebra and general inathematics. Upon necessity. Mr. Deagan teaches the remedial math course. Miss Mary Frances Seever. Mr. George Kenzler. Mr. Milton Leverenz. and Mr. Robert Tay- lor are the teachers in our senior high department. Plane geometry is taught by each of these teachers. o lie 1 a o boarr wen ans assi' M1 ll N Bonham :nukes his point willl thc help of a special chart as ments ns t ass soaks in some ncw l-znowletlgc. I I .IWW Freshmen Ronnie- Needham and Mike R1-eil observe some of the wonders ol nature at ltlurelocl-1 Park during o of the biology class fit-ld trips. l'1ly11' IQ Science Department Students of science are enviable people. Who else sees the things we observe but don't see? Who else knows plants by name and stars by sight? Yvho else but they have a thinking acquaintance with every great mind in the country? Yes. they are enviable: and so are we. to have an up-and-growing science department. More than 800 students a year are grasp- ing the opportunity of putting science in their back- ground. An introduction to nature and to the wondrous secrets and magic nature holds for us is provided in first year biology. Field trips. experiments. and in- numerable unpronounceable words are characteris- tic of our freshman course in science. Have you ever wondered what make things tick. chug. ring. or putt? The answer to these questions. and many. can be found in the elective juniors or senior course of physics. At this time we find our- selves entering laboratories. kilowatt hours. and the metric system. Bubbling test tubes. smelly chemicals. and the basic makeup of all matter are elements of study contained in chemistry l and ll. an elective course for seniors. To understand world conditions. we must know something of the countries of the world-their loca- tions and characteristics. physically and productive- ly. To derive this understanding we are offered world geography. Physical science is an elective course combining fundamentals and principles of physics and chemis- try and is taken in the third or fourth year. To people who accept countless scientific miracles as everyday conveniences. a knowledge and under- standing of science and natureis workings is more than beneficial: it is a supplement to the warm feel- ing of thanks and wonder we have as we observe them. One informed geogruplner locates a point for two friends. v.ssc......,,Qt. WX
