No more jeering and being called prep. We can now walk through the halls with confidence. We are no longer alert for mean old seniors who may jump out of dark corners at us. We are not glad that we have but one year to go, but we are rather regretful that the three years we have experienced have gone so swiftly. But those three years have not been uneventful, the 1948 Junior Class has been active since its freshman days. We hope to make this, our Junior year, the best yet, full of that old Jeff spirit that will never die. JACK PARKER 66490 'Soi Yes, there was one year that we lived in horror. It was the horror that comes from being graduated from grade school into a new world-high school. But look at us now. We know our teachers and classmatesg we know what is expected of us as students of Jeff. We also know what we expect of the building. We don't expect the rooms to move about as they once seemed to do. We know the customs of our school. We don't have to have them explained to us as was the case quite often last year. The halls are not great caves where no joy ever comesg they are our halls in the school building. It all adds up to this, we are sophomores. Many of the freshmen contributed their various talents to another successful Red and Black Revue. After my first hour at Jeff, that eventful morning when classes began, my knees finally stopped shaking. Why Jeff isn't so bad, I said to myself. I found teachers very helpful. They were always ready to hand out seventh hour passes if we had any trouble remembering to come to class. I wished someone would remind those seniors that they were preps too, and not so long ago. They seemed to delight in making us Preps wish we were back in grade school again and under our teacher's wing. However. Jeff seems to grow on you. On returning from Indianapolis after winning the State Champion- ship an estimated 15,000 fans and backers greeted the team and coaches on ' the Civic Dinner spon- Sunday afternoon. One of the outstanding banquets was Ch mber of Commerce which was held at the Purdue sored by the Lafayette a Memorial Union Building. Another banquet, which was sponsored by the Exchange Club, was held at Lincoln Lodge and honored the Bronchos and the Red Devils. Two dances were held in the Jeff gym in the Bronchos' honor, and large numbers turned out to honor the team. For the Jefferson Bronchos' basketball team. After waiting thirty-two years, Coach Marion Crawley brought a championship team out of the finest crop of basketball players that have been at Indianapolis in a long time. We are all proud of such fine players as Ernie Hall, Bob Masters, Charley Vaughan, Bill Kiser, and Dick Robinson. Of course, we mustn't forget the grand second live that the Broncho team had, consisting of J. Lucus, Joe Mottram, Dan Casey, Earl Heninger and Ned Snyder. The feeling of being State Champs is a grand feeling for the team and an equally grand feeling for the rest of the students. With such a swell coach as the boys have. it will not be a surprise to see the Bronchos over at Indianapolis next year. Sports writers all over the state picked Jeff as being the best balanced squad that was in the whole tournament. This is not a shock to the students here at Jeff, who sat on the sidelines and cheered the Bronchos to the state capital. As the team goes into the 1948-49 season people all over Lafayette will be cheering the Jeff squad to the state as the defending '48 State Champs. JEFF WILL BE FINE IN '40. I C. Vaughan B. Kiser E. The members of the team this year were: Douglas Branigin, Leland Lahr, Sally Crandall, and Carolyn Marshall. The team was a member of the Indiana State Debate League and in the state tournament sponsored by this organization Jefferson advanced to the semi-finals. In this tournament Wiley QTerre Hautej defeated Jefferson, 89-87-an excellent and closely contested debate. Umfmq, Charlotte Troxel and Leland Lahr were the Jefferson representatives in Oratory. In the Central Indiana Oratorical contest held at Crawfordsville and again in the Rotary Contest, jefferson was successfully represented. Leland Lahr placed second and third in these very closely contested events. We are looking forward to an even more successful forensic season next year. I I
