MCCARTY- 1895-1947 Born February 9, 1895, on McCarty Lane, east of the city, Mr. McCarty was the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. McCarty. He was graduated from Jefferson High School, and won his bachelor's degree from Purdue in 1918, with his master's degree there in 1925. He saw service in World War I, winning a commission. and then taught for a year at the University of Kentucky. From 1920 to 1926 he taught at Montmorenci High School and from 1926 to 1929 at Klondike. In 1929 he came to Jefferson High School as a teacher and soon after was made principal. In 1932 he was made acting superintendent, which position he continued to hold until his death. He also served as jefferson principal and after 1942 Mr. McCarty gave his full time to the superintendency. The schools flourished and made much progress under Mr. McCarty's able and popular administration. Mr. McCarty's untimely death is mourned by the entire school and com- munity. He was a friend of all who knew him. To those of us who knew him well, who worked by his side and who believed in him, it will be difficult to realize that he is not still here as our superintendent. Superintendent McCarty has left a rich heritage to Lafayette schools in fine music, art, sound education practices, and public service. His greatness, his vision, and his alertness will live in the hearts of jeff students. .IUNIORS -.-- - - I -1 f ' A v I x . - ' f .0 ' ' . l - - ,, .n - is - f A , Row 1. J. Gilma. M. JUNIOR HISTORY As freshmen. we entered the halls of Jeff, feeling self-conscious and out of place. Our first few days there seemed almost like a nightmare. We couldn't find our classes and the word Prep seemed to haunt us everywhere we went. As sophomores, we became a little more assured of ourselves. We began to join in social affairs and attend school meetings, dances, etc. We began to feel as though we really belonged to the school. Now, as Juniors. we are considered upper-classmen and feel much better about the whole situation. This year we took part in many more activities and were more interested in our studies. Row 1. C. We felt and acted just as all freshmen do. In our sophomore year we have felt much more at ease and have participated in school activities and clubs. In our two future years at Jeff we intend to become more active so Jeff will not forget the Class of 49 . Row 1. Ambetor. H. Anderson. J. Alenduff, G. Allan, D. Alt. Row 2. P. Amstutz, L. Aubrey, B. Pa 2, gmuzwt 7946 7947 SEPTEMBER Gee, it seems like vacation just started, but here it is September again and the beginning of another school year-not to mention the beginning of a successful football season for our Bronchos. OCTOBER The annual Booster Dance turned out to be the outstanding event of the month with Helen Watkins reigning as queen and Linda Cassini, Eileen Pilling, and Gladys Thomas as her attendants. NOVEMBER Yippee! We are all dressed up in our best duds to attend the Gallop where Bill Riley lassoed the crown. Everyone was also talking about the spectacular return of the Red and Black Revue. We dropped books, bought elevator and Convo tickets and the word Pry is still ringing in our ears. The school still seems a little new to us but we're adjusting very rapidly by joining clubs and participating in social affairs. In our future years here at Jeff we hope to be active in school affairs and establish ourselves to more modern means of study. Afflis The jeff Bronchos experienced another fine season, finishing iirst in the North Central Conference with a conference record of six wins and no losses. They finished the season with a total of eight wins and no losses. The team this year also boasted of an All-State player. Bill Afflis, guard, being chosen on the first team of all polls. This year's team was reinforced by two new coaches, Norm Willey, line coach, and Gene Britt, end coach. Their services were invaluable as the season's record shows. Pete Gettings, end candidate, was sidelined by a leg injury the first of the season. His was the only major mishap of the season. Page TJ First Row, left to right: E. Hall, D. Casey, D. Bol, D. Masters Guard Forward Center Forward Guard The 1946-47 basketball team will be remembered in years to come. partly because of the fine schedule turned out and partly because of their actual basketball ability. They copped the North Central Conference title by winning ten and losing none. This is the First year that has been accomplished since 1935. That 51 to 50 tragedy handed out by Rossville in tournament play was the same jinx that has hovered over the Bronchos for many preceding years. It, by the way, was one of the hardest fought games ever to be played in the Jeff gym. The ball club consisted of Perk Reitemeier, Don Bol. Bob Lennen and Dick Schnaible, seniors, and Bob Masters, the only junior on the team. The absence of Pete Gettings was felt considerably. These seniors have worked hard for four years together. From the student body to these graduating seniors we extend a hearty greeting for a job well done. Page rr DECEMBER Christmas vacation finally rolled around, and all our spare time was taken up with ice-skating, sledding, the Holiday Tourney, and parties. And ohhhh some of the unique snow scenes that we saw at that time. JANUARY With the Holiday Vacation over. it was back to school with our number one New Year's resolution being, more study- ing in the future. The change of the se- mester and exciting basketball games oc- cupied the rest of our spare time. FEBRUARY Cupid's Paradise, better known as The Queen of Hearts Dance, was held at Lin- coln Lodge this year. Everyone agreed that Joann Scott, who was attended by Marilyn Moore, Joan Baugh, Donna Clark, Barbara Memmer, and Dorothy Kaiser. made a very nice valentine. MARCH Our biggest date of this month was A Date With Judy , starring a wonder- ful Senior cast. Orchids to the cast for bringing all the hilarious escapades of the unpredictable Judy to the Jeff stage. 3 Awifi Sufi fwfr? .iii I wk if ' . N idfr .t 8 tr., ' 1 's li . ,gn a ' f N Q J. W K YQ. Quite a few fellows turned out and they developed into a good team. One of our new coaches this year, Mr.'Glendenning, was the coach. The team had two meets with Frankfort, a tri- angular meet with Ben Davis Qlndianapolisj and Pike Township, one meet with Marion, and then the state meet. As a whole, the team did a good job. Next year everyone is looking forward to a strong showing as many lettermen are returning. The team finished among the first third of two hundred and fifty teams in the state.
