fIH'l Y-I-III: IIT FAIR ROSAMOND At Close of day Fair Rosamond Witliiii her bow'r reelined That labyrinth whose passages So eunningly were twined. She plucked .1 lute and softly sang Of knights and ladies fair, Of royal Henry's jealous love, Of the bow'r he'd built her there. She mused on her strange and lonely fate, Condemned to dwell apart: Her secret love for Engl.1nd's King Weighetl upon her heart. The curtain stirredg she dropped her lute And turned to see who came. Queen Eleanor before her stood. And sternly asked her name. In faltering tones the maiden told Then did the Queen reply, For the guilty love thou be.1r'st the King This hour thou'rt doomed to die! if So choose ye now betwixt the twain, The dagger or the bowlg For I vow to thee thou shalt not live, No more shalt Vex my soul! u l've watched thee now for many J day, As thou thy wiles dost play To Win my royal husbnnd's heart XVhen he seeks thee day by day! ff Know'st thou not that he is wed? His bride and queen am I? His life and love to me are pledged! Thou canst not choose but die! The hapless maid in terror saw The Queen before her stand, The dreadful cup and poniard sharp Glittered in her hand. Fair Rosamond in vain did plead, In vain for mercy beg: To her lips was forced the fateful bowl, She drained it to the dregs.
