LAFAYETTE SERVES THE XVORLD . This slogan, adopted by The Chamber of Commerce, Lafayette, Indiana, typihes the ideal of this community, an ideal of making this uorld .1 better place in which to live, an ideal of service to all. Beauty is always a real service. Lafayette is beautiful. lt nestles in the valley of the XVabasli, famed in story and song. lt is surrounded by some of the most scenic drives in Indiana. Perhaps, it does not have the grandeur of mountains, nor the expanse of the sea. but it does have all the loveliness of wooded hills, tinkling streams, ever-changing pano- ramas. History writes with moving lingers of this XVabash country. lt weaves a spell that enchants and lingers. Here came an intrepid La Salleg here came the earnest pioneer. His hopes and aspirations translated into realities for the next generation: here come the modern trail-blazers, using test tubes and microscope, instead of the axe and the rifle. Here David Ross created and invented, yet with level eyes saw the ways of sound finance. Here Amelia Earhart left with wings outstretched to a star! Lafayette is in the heart of the continent. It is deep in the granary of the Nation. But, it is more than that, it is in the economic and political center of the United States. It is in the heart of a vast workshop, also. Come with me for a moment to U. S. Road No. SZ. Here is a train of giant trucks, there is an airplane overhead. Everyxx here in the whole community is work done by automotive power instead of grinding down humanity. About 39,000 people reside in this community. Round about are the fertile lands of Tippecanoe County. On them are produced varied and abundant crops. Much real wealth flows into this part of the country. As far as per capita wealth is concerned, Lafayette is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. The city owns the water works system. lt has a motorized fire department and offers adequate police protection. There are miles of paved streets. The city park is most beauti- ful, attracting visitors for miles around. lt is a city, too, of attractive, well-built homes. It has an excellent, modern public school system, crowned with Purdue University, a state university at the top. The learning of the few is despotism-the learning of the many is liberty-and intelligent and principled liberty is fame, wisdom, and power. These the public school system olfers to any and all who wish to learn. There are many factors which make Lafayette an ideal manufacturing and distributing center. It is 120 miles southeast of Chicago and 60 miles northwest of Indianapolis, just in the strategical position to profit by trade from these larger metropolitan centers. XVith- in a few miles are two hydro-electric plants, producing an abundance of cheap power. Not far south are rich, plentiful coal fields. There are live trunk railroads with unexcelled freight and passenger service. There is also plenty of labor available. To date the city has been free from any serious labor strife. So, with raw materials near at hand, excellent transportation facilities, cheap and abund- ant power and fuel, near the center of population for the country as a whole, and with contented labor available, Lafayette is most attractive for the manufacturer. interesting that the Aluminum Company of America studied the situation very carefully and then decided to locate a very large new factory here. I.afayette's industries include railroad shops, one of the greatest steering gear factories in the world. .1 boxboard factory, flour mills, a soap factory, foundries, wire works, elec- trical supply works, and many others. It is, also, .1 community of churches. There are many leading benevolent and secret order and lodges with chapters here. Banking facilities are adequate. Medical attention, clinics, hospitals are readily available. In its stores and shops, Lafayette offers quality merchandise. It has many of the ad- vantages and none of the disadvantages of the larger cities. Of course, it is interested in the sports of the time. All Hoosiers are, for that matter. But with all this devotion to sports, the community recognizes the deeper problems of the time and studies them earnestly, too. Truly, there is room fc-r the abundant life in this beautiful Community, nestling on the banks of the XVabash. There is no monotony in our panorama. It is constantly chang- ing, constantly broadening. The best is yet to be. Lafayette offers much to those seeking residence here. Among these advantages are iznequalled educational privileges, good business facilities, excellent industrial sites. amid plenty of religious and cultural opportunities. Here is unrivalled opportunity for the Masterful grasp of material thingsg Strength combined with acuteness and wings!
