Students choose from English and world history, sociology and civics for the second re- quired year. ,lefferson has had winners in the annual Hearst American history contest, both city and national. The ten social science teachers who comprise that departmentis faculty maintain a library of hooks, magazines, and newspapers for study reference and for casual reading by students aware that every dayls news is making history. There are thirteen subjects taught besides drilling. They are Military Organiza- tions. Customs, First Aid, Weapons, Marksmanship, Infantry, Small Unit Tactics, Map Reading. Military Teaching Methods. Brances of the Army, Military Services and Traditions of the Army, Courtesy. and New Development of the Army. The R.0.T.C. not only drills and conducts reviews every Vllednesday. but also is of great service to the school. Every day they put up and take down the 'flag in front of the building. patrol the campus area where cars are parked. and stand guard in the cafeteria. They represent Jefferson in parades and compete with other schools in drilling and Inarksrnanship. Here the boys are practicing their aim in an oulzloor class by lhe pine trees.

They observe those laws at work in the laboratory. carefully collecting facts to be used as the basis forvaccurate deductions. They appreciate the interdependence of plants and animals. the funda- mental makeup of matter, the types of energy and their uses. Graduates from Jefferson have made notable contributions in varied fields requiring scientific training. ln the laboratories. in hospitals. in oil refineries. and in classrooms are workers who are proud to say. HI was a science major at Thomas Jef- ferson High School. Collecling hydrogen gas is the ex- perirnen! being marie by these chem- istry students.
