The teachers in the English Department try to recognize the individuality of each student. so that they may help in the development of the students talents and per- sonality. This is done by developing skills through oral and written lessons Other than the text workbooks. films, tape recordings and records are used as teaching aids. As Jefferson is a college preparatory school, many graduates are able to begin in a more advanced English course when entering college. Law, teaching, and the ministry are some of the fields entered by those students who excel in English. A major in English. which consists of three years, is required of each student. Thi- students have the hest equipment with which to work. There are typewriters. hook- keeping machines, and office practice equipment and scopes. This knowledge also helps to break down the language barrier so that be may know more about his neighbors. Not only is the grammar of the language taught but also the customs of the French and Spanish speaking people. Latin classes learn about ancient Roman culture. Students are urged to take at least two years of foreign languages, as many colleges require it.
