Rare examples are they of that beautiful Spanish architecture brought by the padres from the rolling Spanish plains and the cities of Castile during the Mission Era, when the Franciscans, with their crucifixes their only Weapons, first ventured beyond the Rio Grande into unexplored Wild country and built one paradise alter another in the midst ot miles and miles of Wilderness. To- day picturesque San Antonio stands solidly against this background of romantic history, the influence of the old missions is found everywhere in the city's archi- tecture. Neglected too long, their ancient, Weatherbeaten walls enclosing treasured little portions of those days when a rare civilization flourished for the Indians at the hands ot men of gentle birth, these missions are now receiving the attention their dignity deserves. Eventually, we trust, all ot them will become national historic sites, as did San lose, Queen of all the Missions, by an Act of Congress in 1935. May our dedication, so proudly given, draw even more attention to these stately monuments oi a long-gone era and to the preservation they have so richly earned.
