S . f f f f f Students and teachers of Iefferson now in the Armed Forces, we salute you. You are as much a vital part of America's glorious history as were your valiant forefathers who brought this great America into being at Valley Forge or as your fathers who kept its greatness secure at Chateau Thierry or in the Argonne Forest. We can even sense a salute to you from the spirits of all who, for America, have made the supreme sacrificep we feel that perhaps their loss shall not have been in vain, since you in your greatness are carry- ing on the traditions for which they gave their lives. ffffffffff f f f f f f f f You are the boys who onlyashort while ago did neat tricks with basketballs or zig-zagged down fields with footballs under your arms or brought shining victory to your school in less spectacular events. Now the stakes are life and death, and we are still hold- ing our breath while you are out there on the land or in the air or on the sea or under the sea, setting the example for the rest of us, your splendid courage and your sublime unselfishness making us just as certain of victory as we were in the last sixty seconds of the game in those not-so-long-ago days. f f fff+fffff+ff-f f f ff 4 f f f Whether you are Thomas lefferson's own David Hill, now America's mighty F ly- ing Tiger ace, or whether you are young Bill or Bob or Ioe, now adjusting yourself to your first uniform and the first real gun of your life, keeping it oiled and polished and grimly delighting in its vicious kickg whether you are in the slimy jungles of New Guinea or on the torrid sands of North Africag whether you are peering through the greenhouse of a Flying Fortress over Axis-conquered lands or through the periscope of a deadly sub- marine in Axis-infested waters, whether you are walking a lonely beat in some far flung outpost or guarding a mighty ship in some far distant sea, you are where, as real Ameri- cans, you know you must be for a while. You have set your lips grimly and have taken on the job that had to be done as did your forefathers more than a century ago and your fathers just one generation ago, you and they seeing the cause as a crusade and know- ing you would see it through without a murmur. fffffffffffffff f f f f f You are on a mighty mission, bringing back to all of us the simple little every-day things that we all took for granted as the heritage of free people before that tragic Decem- ber seventh of l94l. You are preserving forever our own American brand of Democracy. You are even giving us our graduation day, for only because you are where you are does our graduation day have a chance to be here. ffffff ffffffff f f f f f Our earnest, prayer is that Our Heavenly Father guide and protect you through these momentous days and bring you safely home again to your loved ones. -fff

f 1 f + f In the shadow of a year and a half of war our great Nation holds a deeper meaning for us than ever before. No longer complacent, we are now fully aware of our Country's greatness. We now know the sacred privilege of being Ameri- cans, of serving America, of working for America, of fighting for America, of being able to say reverently, Thank God that we live-i1'1A1'nefj.CQ. f af f + at f f ff + f f +1 1 ff 1 f 1 + f f f f Here in Thomas Iefferson High School our school life is far richer now that we have learned the luxury of serving others by doing without the old, unimportant things on which we once placed so high a value. Our school life is more colorful now that each of us is playing such a tremendous role in bringing ultimate Victory to our great land. This year each call for service has brought an eager response from our students and our teachers. Guided by our wise and patriotic principal, everyone of us has gone all out for Victory, there has been no shortage in our fight- ing spirit. In each Iefferson heart there has been this one thought, this one determination: WE MUST WIN TI-IIS WAR. f f f f f 1 ff f f The many drives-War Bonds, War Stamps, hospital equipment, victrola records, keys, razor blades, coathangers, knives, scrap metal, scrap wool, scrap paper, books, Victory gardens, stamps, and a multitude of others-we have plunged into with clear, unflinching eyes, knowing that Victory will not wait for the nation that is late. We have felt in our hearts the deep thrill of a patriotism as old as the Declaration of Independ- ence, as new as rationing. ffff f f f f f f f f f f f- f 1 f And so, fellow students of Iefferson, in your Monticello of IQ43 your Annual Staff has tried to show you 'llefferson at War. We have tried to give you an authentic picture of you yourselves in step with Uncle Sam, proudly playing your part in this war. We hail your efforts, and just as proudly we give you your l943 MONTICELLO, trusting that this wartime edition may ever be one of your most treasured possessions. f f f f f f
