As Jeffer- son, now very young, grows in years and wisdom, each class can help to enhance the beauty, not only of the grounds and building, but also of the student body itself, those whose lives are filled with the beauty of our high school years within the walls of Jefferson. It is this intangible beauty as well as the tangible that we have tried to capture for you in your 1940 MONTICELLO. 1 f f We want this book of yours to help you recall how sudden winds swayed tall evergreens, how long corridors resounded with young laughter, how the rush of hurried feet at the height of inter-period traffic thrilled you, how the gracious mantle of unfamiliar snow made a fairyland of your familiar school. May this book remind you in later years that Jefferson is still here for you to come back home to, viva adhuc et desiderio pulchriora, living still and more beautiful because of our desire.

Beautiful lefferson! These words are echoed and re-echoed each day by all who pass through the doors of our beautiful school. Beautiful Jefferson, glowing vibrantly with a high spirit akin to our school's towers, reach- ing to the sky! No one can deny the beauty of the spacious halls, the dazzling magnifi- cence of the carved white facade, the breath- taking loveliness of ever-blooming flowers, the green glory of grass and shrubs. One's eye can roam in fine delight and never strike a jarring note. One can revel in the harmony -perfect blending of separately beautiful melodies in graceful stone, varied green sur- coated landscaping, wonders of nature on the campus and in the patios, sunny-blue external surroundings, and wide spaces of perfect in- terior. f f ff Besides all this material charm, however, there is a beauty of spirit that lives in the heart of every member of the adminis- tration, the faculty, and the student body.
