onewoncl Very inauspicious were the beginnings of the Fiesta de San lacinto, initiated in l89l to honor Benjamin Harrison, president of the United States, who visited San Antonio on San lacinto Day. What a far cry from that simple parade of decorated carriages, culminating in front of the Alamo with a battle of real flowers, is the majestic pageant of today queenly floats, gaily decorated cars, impressive soldiers, and proud school children winding for more than two hours between cheering thousands, the march ending at the Alamo, there reviewed by dis- tinguished civilians and military men of the nation! From that humble beginning also has arisen the coming of the King of the Fiesta, escorted by cavaliers, the picturesque La Noche de la Fiesta, the reverent Pilgrimage to the Alamo, the Pioneer Ball, military ground and air reviews, stirring industrial parade, elaborate Childrens' F ete, all of these culminating with the resplendent Coronation of the Queen. ln most of these observances students from Thomas lefferson High School play major roles. In our book this year we have presented as our theme the interesting connection between these letferson students and the Fiesta itself. The Monticello staff extends grateful appreciation to the Fiesta de San lacinto Association for the permission, never before granted, to use as our frontispiece and division pages the four-color process plates of the famous invitation extended annually to the one thousand highest personages in our nation.

Dedication Gun qacuftij In later years when memories of our school days come thronging, it is our former in- structors whom we will remember most vividly. Their sympathy, their kindness, their tolerance, and their understanding- these are the qualities that will endear them to us then as now. We will think of the scrapes from which they saved us and the influence they exerted upon our lives in our formative years, when they were our guardian angels as well as our instructors. With deep appreciation in our hearts for their noble Work we gratefully dedicate the l939 Monticello to our friends, Ffh:-: 3:-:ttf-znhon qaculltg
