all Clanilaute Thomas Jefferson Still Lives. These words, spoken by the dying lips of John Adams just a few hours after lefferson's own death, are true. Jefferson lives and will live forever in grateful hearts as an outstanding patriot and a true friend of man. Mem- ber of Virginia House of Burgesses, member of Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia, Plenipotentiary to France, Secretary of State, Vice-President and finally President of the United States. . .Jefferson gave forty-four long years of invaluable service to his country, yearning all the while for the serenity of Monticello, his little mountain home. Devoutly we wish this great American could know of the high honors that have come to our school, now designated as most modern high school in America. We like to feel that his spirit, so alive among us, has contributed strongly to the national recog- nition shown us this year. Yes, even as in all other Amer- ican hearts, Thomas Jefferson Still Lives in the hearts of the students of our own Thomas Jefferson High School.,

Athletics letterson Down Town Realizing that true de- mocracy must depend up- on the education ot the masses, Thomas Ietferson formulated a magnificent system ot education, trom primary grades through State University. Far ahead ot his time, he saw only the university idea carried out. The Univer- sity ot Virginia was the child ot his dreams. He drew the plans for it, su- pervised its construction, and, on days when he could not be present, he Watched the W o r k m e n through a telescope from the terrace at Monticello. A .1 ,id -Z 1. JI Dedication In Thomas lefferson High School there are two people, loved and revered by the entire student body, who are living examples of the spirit of democracy for which our school is striving. Lighted many years ago by the great man whose name our school bears, this torch of democracy is burning today, safe in the hands of our own Miss Smith and Mr. Ivey. Never were two school leaders more loyal to stu- dents, nor were students more loyal to leaders. Playing a large part in the character-molding of every student in lefferson is the splendid influence of our Dean of Girls and our Vice-Principal and Dean of Boys. Representing friendship, strength, efficiency, and courage, Mr. Ivey and Miss Smith point the way for lefferson's men and women of tomorrow. Their sympathetic understanding warms the spirit of our school and keeps ever burning in its heart the vital flame of democracy. To two warm friends of every girl and boy in Jefferson this book,-your 1938 Monticello, is affectionately dedicated.
