The new lines of jefferson High School represent one of these phases of the modern day. The Stott presents the Jefferson High School student body with the 1953 Jilin, 4 1 In Memory of George Hibbord The halls of jefferson will know one face no more, but his name will live in the memories of those who knew him forever. The man is George Hibbard, Jefferson's basketball coach for eleven years, who passed away quietly last August. Almost everyone, whether they knew him personally or not, will remember his basketball teams of past years, especially the one that won the State championship two years ago. All of his teams were not winners, but even when they were not winning, the spirit was there, leading them on against all odds. This spirit was greatly due to his personality and enthusiasm which he was able to convey to team members. The Spectrum staff of 1953 takes pride to honor and to pay tribute to a beloved coach, George Hibbard. Dedicated to Miss Piggott The staff takes pleasure in dedicating this year book to one of jefferson's best and most loved teachers, Miss Katharine Piggott. Since taking up her duties at Jefferson High School in the fall of 1917, she has taught math to hundreds of students. Her genuine warm smile, gentle understanding nature, and pleasant encouraging voice will never be forgotten. All those who have known her will remember her as a sincere friend, and an inspiring teacher. Upon her retirement, we Wish her many happy years in the future and express our deepest gratitude for the thirty-five years of service and guidance she has rendered. As she looks through the pages of this book, may they bring back many treasured memories. 3 E 2 1 1 I Y 2 1 4 i I w wmwmmzawmm s 5 E 2 2 Z 2 if 55 Q 5? 52 R 5 9 E 5 4 3 S 3 2 Q 3 Q E Q as af S S Q if Qs 'Z 2 sf if s v 62 fi if ka z iv Message to Closs of '53 As each succeeding year passes, I am amazed at the increasing ability of our young people to surpass the performances of those who have gone before them. As a firm believer in youth, I know that with few exceptions, our boys and girls do ac- cept responsibilities when given to them. Only this past year the student body of jefferson High School revised and im- proved its constitutiong made definite strides toward its goal of self-disciplineg organized a committee with sub-commit- tees to develop a code of ethical and moral standards, to which all of its mem- bers can be reasonably expected to sub- scribe during school and out-of-school hoursg studied ways and means of in- creasing and improving the number of services and activities the various classes and clubs could offer the schoolg and worked actively with the administration and the faculty in the important task of improving the curriculum. These are but a few of their accomplishments. This rep- resents citizenship in its finest sense. Con- gratulations to you who have served our school so excellently. Wife are proud of you and your fine leadership. - C. L. JONES, Principal Z Q 3. Q S Mwwmwwm v-w f fmgzfm-.v , M., ......,.. , ...., , N B HISTORY ' Row l: Max'y Van Fleet, Carlin Gilstrap. Wfith it comes feeling of pride and joy intermingled with sadness for the passing of this happy and carefree yet serious and responsible phase in our lives. We will take with us a storehouse of treasured memories of our many good times. However, we realize, now that our education at public expense is ended, that our four years of high school are the most important ones of our youth. Jefferson has a well established and out- standing record in the field of musical, athletic and scholastic achievements. We hope we have contrib- uted in some way to the honor and worth of our school. Jefferson High School is a school renowned for its spirit of democracy. Thomas Jefferson, one of the great leaders of the country, was an ardent advocate of this democratic principle and philosophy. We ac- knowledge also that never before in our history has the spirit of democracy been so highly valued. May we as future citizens continue to reflect this spirit in our active, useful and patriotic lives. The influence of our high school days will be demonstrated in the manner in which we meet life,s challenges and de- cisions. To our teachers and counselors and principal we feel deeply grateful. They have given us much in pa- tient, tireless effort and inspiration. The past four years have brought to us the keen realization of the true value of our high school educa- tion. After graduation we will go in different direc- tions but we will always stand united in our spirit of loyalty to Jefferson. - CALVIN BILLETER CLASS MOTTO: We have crossed the bay, the ocean is in sight. OUTH CENTER T I x 1 4 1 S 2 5 2 5 7+ 3 www FOGTBALL The Jefferson Democrats for the first time since 1939 are City Champions all by themselves. It was one of the most exciting prep seasons Portland had had in years. A record breaking crowd of 34,084 watched the annual Jamboree and an overflow crowd of 7500 saw Jefferson bag the f'moral title by defeating Grant at Lincoln Memorial Field. Probably the most heartbreaking moment of the season Cfor Grant rootersj was when the news- papers came out with the story that Grant had forfeited four of its games because they had used an ineligible player. At that time they were lead- ing the league with a record of six wins and no losses. Roosevelt who was one of the pre-season fav- orites was also considerably weakened by ineligi- bility when it was found that their star quarterback Coach DeSylvia Coach Waldorf Harvey Neffendorf was over age. The Rough- riders won only three games all season. Jefferson started the season by first downing a good Vancouver team 13 to 7 in an old rivalry at Hopkin Jenkins field. The post-war series be- tween the two teams now stands at two games apiece. In the Jamboree Jefferson led Benson 6 to 0 at the end of the first quarter but the Techmen rallied in the final three quarters to tie the game 12 to 12. After that, with the city title riding on every game the Demos rose to the occasion week after week and really hit their peak in the fifth league game against a highly touted Franklin team by rolling up a 11-2 to 0 score. Soon afterwards came victory over a forfeit wrecked Grant team. Because of the forfeits Jeff was tabbed as a synthetic and smelly championf, But the Demos went out to prove differently and did so by winning 7 to 0. It was an even battle all the way with Jeff finally winning on one play, a pass from Steve Kraft to Captain Bruce Harding which set up a scoring plunge from the two yard line by Roger Williams. In the state playoffs Jeff went to Bend where they waxed the Lava Bears on a Saturday night 31 to 6. Highlight of the game was an 80 yard touch- down run by sophomore Grant Jackson on the first play of the game. Advancing to the semi-finals the Democrats suffered their first defeat in 14 games at the hands of Central Catholic, the Hnal score was 28 to 7. The Rams went on to defeat Benson 7 to 6 to win the State Championship. These were the only two teams which marred Jefifersons record of 8 wins 1 loss and 1 tie. All through the season Jeff showed tremendous strength in its line and reserves. There were Eve players selected for starting All-City berths and one on the second team. On the first team was: Mac Wiebe, center, Mike Bogdan and Eddie Phillips, guards 5 Harding, end, and Wfilliams, half- back. Jack Hogan, tackle, and only a junior was on the second team. The honorable mentions from Jeff were: Joe Meier and Jack McDaniels, tackles, Dallas Renfro, fullback, Kraft, quarter- back, and Leroy Rollins, halfback. Others who contributed a great deal to the Demos good for- tune were , guards, Bob Lackore and Jim Breath- ouwer, center, Jim Wingo, tackles, Jim Wilson and Les VVeirson, halfbacks, Chuck McKeen and Ray Moore, fullback, Grant Jackson, end, Ron Wilson, and Nathan Redditt as safety on defense. Much of JeFferson's success must be given Eric Waldorf and Tom DeSylvia, who are also planning on a good team again next year. Returning letter- men will be Hogan, VVingo, Jackson, McKeen, Frank Moore, Brian Eggiman, Al Owen, Harley Jacob, Bob Gill, and Frank VVadsworth. The B squad which lost only to the Grant Jayvees will supply added strength in such solid players as: Howard Hogan, Jerome Simpson, Ron Leverett, Jerry Spivey on the line, and Frank Nahorney, Harold Noell and Dean Saxton in the backfield. 1952 CITY CHAMPIONS ' Front row: J. BASKETBALL You know I'd give anything to play for a school that has its student body behind the team as those kids have, commented an adult rooter at the Jeff-Roosevelt playoff game. It makes a fel- low go all out to win no matter what the odds are. Although the Demos lost the playoff game they were still the hottest team in the league by rolling up the longest win streak of the season at eight games. But by dropping the last two games of the season this was only good enough to place Jeff in a tie for second place with Benson and Roosevelt. The Demos weren't a big team to begin with as Dick Beachell was the tallest starter at 6,1 . Martin Turner also 6'1 and Burke Girvan 6'2', were the tallest subs, however both saw considerable action. What was lacked in size was made up in speed and that never-say-die spirit, this was proven by the large number of games which were won in the second half. In pre-season play the Demos posted an even record of four wins to four losses, splitting in home and home series with Salem, Molalla and Gresham. In a two night tournament at Hillsboro, Jeff lost to the Hillsboro Spartans the first night but came back the second night to defeat Oregon City by ten points. Opening the regular season Jeff dropped three of its first four games then came roaring back with a resounding victory over favored Roosevelt 46 to 36. This touched off the afore mentioned win streak of eight games which was finally broken in the second 'round of play by the City Champion Cleveland Indians. During this period the num- ber 21 became magic to the Demos as first Bruce Lord scored 21 points against Roosevelt, Little Dick Rask followed with 21 against Cleveland and Roger Williams touched off a scoring spree of his own with 21 against Grant. He followed up with 22 against Franklin, 30 against Lincoln and then 22 against Benson. COACH JOHN NEELEY Williams was rewarded for his efforts when he was unanimously chosen All-City by both news- papers. Bruce Lord through terrific play-making was picked on the Journals second team and as an honorable mention by the Oregonian. Others who contributed heavily in Demo games were Eddie Graves and Dick Rask, juniors, who alternated at guard, Martin Turner and Bill Turlay, seniors who picked off an enormous amount of rebounds along with Dick Beachell at the forward posts. Beachell is also a junior and will be back for an- other year. Coach John Neeley is looking forward to hav- ing an even better season next year. The NB squad which placed second in the league under Tom De- Sylvia will furnish added talent in Ron Leverett, Bob Parker, Jerry Spivey, Roger Klahn, John Pet- erson, Larry Novinger and Gene Ginther. Washing- ton and Jeff have identical records of six wins and four losses, which is good for a third place position. Right behind is Cleveland with a .514 record. In the second place spot and pressing for the lead is Grant with eight wins and two losses. Lincoln continues to set the pace by having lost only one game along with nine wins. The Democrats so far have been led in the hitting department by centerfielder Roger Williams. VVil- liams, who was All-City in football and basketball, stands a good chance to repeat in baseball also. Thus far, with four games remaining on the schedule, he has had 16 hits in 32 times at bat for a solid .500 average. Right behind iss pitcher-outfielder Byron Phillips with 13 hits in 31 times at bat and a healthy .451 average. On the mound Phillips has a record of one win and one loss. Ace pitchers for the Demos have been Dick Beachell and Don Kragerud. Beachell, a junior, has accumulated a record of two wins and two losses and a strikeout total of 24. Kragerud, a senior, has three wins against two losses with 33 strikeouts. Held in reserve are pitchers W'arren Green, a senior, and John Peterson, a lefty sophomore who has looked good and promises to lend lots of help next year. TRACK Jefferson's versatile track team so far this year has been in only five meets including the City and State Relays. The closest rival was Grant who barely nosed out Franklin 30 to 29 W5 for second place. The Junior Varsity was also City Relay champs as they scored 54Vg points to leave behind runnerup Lincoln who had 37V2 points. JeFferson,s thinclads only defeat came in the State Relays held at Hayward Field in Eugene. The Demo- crats' best showing came in the shuttle hurdles and mile relay.
