We share the ideals of our fellow countrymen and the pride. But our pride extends beyond our nation’s history to that of our own heritage and founding. 8 ORGANIZATIONS Involvement in organizations is a key to our growth in the future, For no one can call himself a citizen without a measure of participation. J Staff . . . The Spirit of '76 idealizes the characteristics of the American people, past and present. For this reason, editor Mary Hammes and the J Staff decided for the Bicentennial year to portray Jefferson’s Gemuet-lichkeit heritage in our school, our community, and our country. Two local civic organizations displayed their own Gemuetlichkeit spirit by financially contributing to J Staff. The Rotarians and the Business and Professional Womens Club sponsored Ellen Landowski. Sharon Schroedl, and Debbie Wedl to a summer workshop in Ripon. On behalf of the staff, Mary Hammes paid tribute to Principal L. Gene Wilson at the Scholastic Assembly by presenting him with a pictorial album highlighting his years of service to the school. J Staff. ROW 1: S Schroedl. C. Wilson. Miss Marshall. M Hammes. J. For the first time in many years the students of JSHS reaped the benefits of having an accomplished photographer as the editor of the PEN. This photographer editor, Steve Lehmann, and co-editor Diane Petrick put together nine monthly issues with the assistance of a young and enthusiastic staff. Mr. Stolten-berg, the PEN advisor, helped to shape the unusually pictorial as well as highly informative newspaper. The PEN presented an additional new look with the inclusion of a feature article entitled A Salute to ... It was designed to give special recognition to teachers and students for their various contributions to the school. Junior Carl Finney and sophomore Diane Springer have consented to accept the challenge of developing additional innovative ideas by sharing the 1976-77 editorship. Mr. Stoltenberg gives the staff a few pointers. PEN STAFF. (Above) ROW 1: Connie Powers. Kristi Traeder. Ann Weber. Chris Pelikan. Terri Shannon. Jane Aumann. ROW 2: Cindy Koehler. Janet Piek. The spring installation of the National Honor Society was held on the evening of April 29. The ceremony honored the 8 reelected seniors and 13 newly elected junior and senior members for their outstanding achievements in the areas of knowledge, leadership, character, scholarship, and service. Bart Lia, Master of Ceremonies, gave the welcome and spoke briefly regarding Plato, his philosophy, and how it pertains to our society. Other reelected members were than introduced and participated in the installation ceremony. Guest speaker Dr. John Pearson spoke about the talent of the members and how they should put it to use in our society’s future. Candles symbolize the five virtues of NHS. The major responsibility of the advisor is to blow out the candles Bart Lia served as Master of Ceremonies. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY ROW I: T. Stauss. M. Hammes, C. Erie. J. Bauch, C. Peli-kan. S. On Valentine’s Day, they played Cupid and delivered red, pink, and white carnations (sometimes all three) to surprised students from their secret and not so secret admirers. They also sponsored an exciting acrobatic circus which performed in the gym on May 22. Pictured to the left are the student council members. Standing are B. Mercer, D. Didion, P. Olson, B. Student Council 17 Colonel Sanders, Johnny Bench, Nelson Rockefeller, and Jimmy Carter highlighted the year for Mr. Larson and six of his students when they travelled to the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 15,000 kids from all over America attended and planned activities for the coming year. A delicious chocolate cake with a bicentennial theme was presented to the faculty during National FFA Week. Earlier in the year, members sold fruit and candles. The basketball team had a victorious season topped off by playing in a tournament at Janesville Parker. Selling candy at noon to raise money for the Needy Children's Stocking Fund was a major undertaking of FTA. Their generosity was further demonstrated by presenting teachers with shiny, red apples during Education Week. FTA. (Upper Right) ROW 1: L. Jilek. D. Ganser. D. Hirschfeld, L. Strohbusch. ROW 2: J. Sponsoring a Valentine’s Day Polka Dance, and selling popcorn and items from the Tom-Watts Showcase were three profit-makers for FBLA. In February, Carol Erie and Pat French were selected to represent the club as Miss FBLA and Mr. FBLA at the regional leadership contest at Rosendale. Mouth-watering hot dogs and dietbreaking treats were sold by FHA at noon to finance a spring trip to Madison. Their biggest project was making a bicentennial flag. Homecoming played a major role in the activities of both clubs. FHA took first place in the float division and FBLA won first place in the van division. 20 fbla FHa Mrs. Bretl — FHA Advisor Mrs. Essock — FBLA Advisor FBLA. (ABOVE — In alphabetical order): J. Spanish Club. .. Pat French blew a fuse! But it was not over the girls. It was at the Powder Puff football game where Pat's main concern was the pretzel sale sponsored by Library Club. Money raised from the pretzel and paperback book sales was used to purchase a new stereo 8-track system for the library. The two Spanish classes joined forces in selling ice cream and took field trips to see a play in Madison and the Spanish Festival in Whitewater where the famous Luis Rivera Spanish Dance Company presented dances from the 16th Century to the present. Hilda Gomez and Chuck Splitt-gerber, third-year Spanish students, and second-year student, Jean Jung, received first places in the annual Spanish Speaking Contest. They promoted it by selling recycled stationary note cards and sponsoring aluminum and paper drives. The money was contributed to Eagle Valley Environmentalists and the Nature Conservacy. Group activities included cross country skiing and hiking on an overnight trip to Kettle Moraine. The Harrah Reno Nevada gambling night and the sale of popcorn filled apothecary jars were two of Ski Club’s fund raising events headed by president John Radtke. The profits were used for transportation of skiers. On the very first outing, the illustrious leader, Mr. Stoltenberg, set the pace by skiing into a pole. Not to be outdone, Bob Buske demonstrated his aerial accomplishments by spread-eagling” into another skier, knocking her to the ground. -BMCT WANTS YOU TO SAVE ALL 4LUM) CM,TOMBS SKI CLUB. ROW 1: L. Investment Clubs A scholarship will be given this year for the first time to a deserving senior member of Medical Club. Money for it was raised by selling baked goods and candy. A field trip was also taken to Madison to attend a March of Dimes program. Camera Club members attempted to master the fine art of photography and did a really great job. One of the highlights of the year for the five photography bugs was the display of their work in the halls of Jefferson Senior High. A little over one hundred students staked their claim in the newly formed Investment Club. Their hope for a big dividend rested in MGIC (Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Corporation). Who knows. JSHS may be contributing to the developement of future successful stock market tycoons. Theresa Curry cheerfully purchased one of the many MGIC stocks. MEDICAL CLUB. (Above) ROW 1: D. Ganser. J. Choir Chosen To Sing At State Capitol On November 5, choirs from Jefferson, Kenosha Tremper and Middleton were chosen to sing at the Second Annual Governor's Proclamation Concert held at the state capitol in Madison. The purpose of the concert was to make the public aware of the distinct contribution which singing as an organized activity is making to the development of the young people in Wisconsin schools. Solo-ensemble contests were again held in March and May with individuals participating as well as the two choirs. At the April concert, an adult choral group from the community performed with the Concert Choir and the Girls' Glee Club sang with the Girls' Chorus. Choir 33 SWING CHOIR. (Right) ROW 1: R. Stauffer. Music Groups Receive High Ratings Snappy rhythms, new lists of selections, and featured soloists, combined with unique musical ability and hours of practice, created superior performances by all the special music groups. Regular Tuesday night rehearsals contributed to the fine sound of Stage Band when they performed at the Chili Supper and Vocational Banquet. Swing Choir, under the direction of Mr. Jewett, received a high enough rating at the District Solo and Ensemble contest in Fort to advance to State, with their version of Bluesette and Follow Your Heart. Several Pep Band members got the chance to display their directing ability during the absence of Mr. Hartwig at one basketball game. Band Bands Present A Bicentennial Program Due to the large number of students enrolled in the band department, Mr. Hartwig and Mr. Brice decided to change the usual procedure of combining all the members into one large group. The eighty-piece Symphonic Band and the slightly smaller Concert Band were designed to provide each instrumentalist a challenging part suited to his own ability. The bands gave their first performance of the year at the annual Christmas Vocal-Instrumental Concert. The program included Sleigh Ride, The Christmas Song, and a medley of carols entitled Christmas Festival. A bicentennial theme was expressed by the selected music of both the Junior and Senior High at the February Concert of Bands. One of the highlights of the evening was the performance of the 1812 Overture, complete with the ringing of bells and the firing of a cannon, which brought the capacity crowd to its feet. The program ended with the combined bands playing America the Beautiful. Music is well said to be the speech of angels. Squads Perform Original Routines White gloves and new jazz steps gave the PomPom Squad a different look for several of the original routines they performed. These routines, which included a soft shoe version of Mississippi Mudd, were greatly enjoyed by football and basketball fans. Headchops, walkovers, and triple tosses were a few of the perfected stunts used by the flags and rifles. These squads, under the direction of captains Carol Erie and Terri Shannon, matched their routines to complement the Marching Band. POMPOM SQUAD. (Far Above) ROW 1: M Rogan, D. Hagen. T. Aumann. They always managed to come up with a humorous skit for pep assemblies and spent hours after school painting signs. Mary Noble held the position of Chairman. The advisor was Mrs. Bretl. The Boys' J Club decided to use the profits from their candy sales to honor several of their own members. They bought blankets for any 4-year letter winner in any sport. The recipients were: Lee Schiferl, Paul Olson, and Tom Stauss. Sponsoring a WOKY Basketball game was the biggest money-maker for the Girls' J Club. Presidents for the J Clubs were Diane Petrick and Tim Brunner. Miss Wilson and Mr. Leipold served as advisors. J Clubs 43 0 Small Team Puts Forth Great Effort Cross country, the fall sport which sometimes seems to take a back seat to football, requires much strength and stamina. The young men who made up the team dedicated many mornings and afternoons conditioning and practicing for this strenuous sport. Although there were only enough runners to form a varsity team, the boys went all out to do their job in representing Jefferson. Sophomore Steve Shilkey was again named Most Valuable Performer. He also was voted co-captain, along with graduating Senior Jim Gruennert. The team was a relatively young one with four of the five lettermen returning next year. Among them were Brian Schroedl, who was chosen for Best Daily Effort, and Steve King, Most Improved Runner. Co-captain Jim Gruennert is light on his feet. 44 Cross Country VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY. Monona Grove, Sun Prairie, Stoughton, and the Eagles all ended the season with a 5-2 record. The team's overall record of 7-2 earned them a tenth position in the state ratings. Tom Stauss was again chosen the Most Valuable Player by the team and the Player of the Year in the Badger Conference. While leading the conference in scoring for the past two years, he established an all-time career scoring record. He was named to the All-State first team as a running back by the AP and UPI. The WNA (Wisconsin Newspapers Association) also chose Stauss to its first team. Wayne Haberman, tackle, was named on the All-State third team by UPI and the All-State second team by WNA. Haberman was chosen Best Tackle on the Eagle squad and Tim Bare the Best Blocker. Tom Wedl and Stauss were elected cocaptains by their teammates, and Coach Knoblauch was awarded Coach of the Year in the Badger Conference. Enthusiasm Grows In Girls’ Sports The growth of enthusiasm and participation in girls’ sports was evident this year by the number of girls interested in volleyball. Although this was only the second year in which this sport was offered, there were enough members to compete not only on a varsity but also on a junior varsity team. Miss Delany coached the major squad, assisted by Diane Petrick, captain, and Carol Erie, Most Valuable Player again this year. Although the team's overall record was not a winning one, improvement over last year was decisive in this still fairly new sport. Student teacher Mr. Durley lent a helping hand by keeping the JVs in tow. The tennis team showed promise for the future with its better players being underclassmen. Juniors Kathy Siegler and Debbie Hotter, who was elected Most Valuable Player, led the team with the most wins. Girls' Volleyball 49 Wrestlers Raise Funds By Selling Stationery Remember buying some mod stationary that cost three dollars a box? The wrestlers embarked upon this project in hopes of buying an automatic mat-lifter or a mercury spotlight in the near future. Considering the Eagle matmen were in a rebuilding season, the squad did a very commendable job. They finished the year with a 7-6 overall record and a 2-5 in conference matches. Six wrestlers went to the regionals and Lee Schiferl and Bob Buske advanced to the sectional meet. The Dan McGinnis award, the highest honor achievable, was earned by Lee Schiferl. To be eligible to receive it, one must have wrestled three years while winning a major letter two of those years. Leading the team with fifteen pins, Jeff Prust took the Most Valuable Player award. Despite these shortcomings, the girls, coached by Mary Delany and aided by Kathleen Groskopf, greatly improved as the season progressed. Diane Petrick was voted the most valuable player by her teammates and Connie Powers was chosen as captain. The gymnastics team, coached by Vicki Van Galder and assisted by Bonnie Knoblauch, had a fantastic season. They placed fifth at the conference meet which they hosted, and received ninth place at the regionals. Angie Monogue placed fourth on the beam at regionals and went on to the sectionals meet at Elkhorn. Kim Fortin, performing on the team, horse, and bars, won the team's MVP award. The starting lineup of Paul J. Olson, Tom Schloesser, Tim Stauss, Tom Stauss, and Tom Wedl played well together and were backed up by a strong reserve bench. We were fortunate to have the best guards in the Badger Conference, Wedl and Stauss. Wedl was the conference scoring champion with a total of 382 points and had a field goal shooting percentage of 48 and a free throw percentage of 72. He was elected Most Valuable Player and was named to the All-Conference First Team. Stauss was named to the Second Team and Olson, a forward, received Honorable Mention. Coached by Ken Leipold and assisted by Coach Trinrude, they finished with an 8-6 conference record, a 10-9 overall record, and placed third in the conference. PEARSON — Superintendent of Schools Board Approves New Building Program School year 1975-76 provided many changes and the promise of more in the future for the students, teachers, administrators, and school board. The first of these changes came about with the retirement of Superintendent Richard Marshall, and the hiring of his replacement, Dr. John C. Pearson. Dr. Pearson and the school board were faced with a variety of problems and decisions, the greatest of which was the approval of a three million dollar building program. The work on the new high school addition began immediately and the building is scheduled to be used for classes in August. When this addition is completed, the Sullivan Elementary school will be enlarged so that it will accommodate all K-6 students in the Rome-Sullivan area. The need for more room at the high school rose sharply with the decision to include the freshman class. For the first time in fourteen years, Jefferson Senior High will be a four-year high school. Women's Lib was very apparent when the girls contributed hustle to all of the girls' sports teams. Although we had to take the areas left over from the juniors and seniors to eat our lunches and got last choice of other things (unless we wanted to be put on their blacklist), we have many happy memories of our first year in senior high school. But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and the men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go. They want full measure of all your pleasure. But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad. and you lose them all. There are none to decline your nectared wine. But alone you must drink life's gall. Feast, and your halls are crowed; Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live. But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a long and lordy train. Scholarships 101 Senior Banquet ... Senior Banquet is a night for dresses and sport coats; a night for good-byes and see-you-soons. But, most of all, Senior Banquet is a night for seniors to have fun one last time together. The evening began with a welcome by president Janet Piek. The class and their guests then sat down to a bountiful meal prepared by the school cooks. A new, improved, and female Wheatstone entertained with a variety of “music” from hard rock to polkas. The Senior Mafia presented awards to Bill Meinel and Brad Di-dion. Farewells to the group from Atal-lah and Mr. Wilson completed the evening. The class officers presided over the festivities from their very own head table. 102 Senior Banquet Mary Castanon and Wanda Mode provide the musical accompaniment for the Wheatstone on the phonograph. Mike Curry just couldn't believe that he could go back for seconds and thirds and Graduation Day — June 6, 1976 ... Mr. Wilson congratulates Cindy Koehler on winning the Schweiger Scholarship and Sue Ganser the Joe Davies. Sally Gross tips her cap for graduation. The final march to POMP CIRCUMSTANCE brings many solemn faces. 104 Graduation Guest speaker Dr. Lee S. Dreyfus not only challenged the Class of ’76. but he entertained the entire audience. Salutatorian Sue Hamann, valedictorian Cindy Koehler, and class president Janet Piek each spoke briefly at Commencement. Mr. Wilson and daughter Chris leave Jefferson Senior High together. Your friends say they’ll keep in touch But you know they won’t. Your teachers say come back and see them. And you know you won't. Maybe someday it won't matter. But, right now, it hurts a little. Graduation 107 fltallah Enjoys American Life Americans are interested in learning about foreign cultures and exchanging different ideas, which is how AFS evolved. Through community efforts, Jefferson has been able to host students from other countries. They spend a school year living and learning with an area family. Atallah Allmawi, from Lebanon, resided with the Henry Miller family. Patty Miller, a junior, helped Atallah adjust to his new way of life; and from the welcoming day assembly, he has been well received. Cultural exchange is a goal of AFS and in this case, a successful goal. Atallah learned what it was like to be homecoming king and, among other things, how to survive as an American bachelor, At the same time, students at Jefferson became more aware of Lebanese problems in relationship to world affairs. AFS 109 seniors . . . seniors . . . seniors . . . seniors . . . seniors . . . seniors . . . seni The Class of '76 has many countless memories beginning on our first day at the Junior High until graduation on June 6. Among them are freshman civics, sophomore Sadie Hawkin’s homecoming dance, Junior Prom, and Easter vacation in Florida as seniors. Already many of us are looking forward to returning next year to see the new school and reminisce about the old. Things won't be the same, however, without Mr. Wilson and Eileen in the office or Mr. Stoltenberg planning skiing trips. Since we are Mr. Wilson's last graduating class, we presented a plaque to him recognizing his 13 years as principal. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS. Our country is growing, developing, and we as individuals must continue to grow and to develop by broadening our horizons. For some of us this means a whole new life — to leave our circle of friends and colleages to explore and discover new facets of life, to make new friends, to cot+quer new goals, to meet new challenges. These are decisions all of us now have made or must make soon. The end of one life and the rich, full beginning of another awaits us all. I u I : %
