Eagle Nine Have Successful Year Fans again saw the power of the Mighty Eagles as before in the fall. But now the season is spring and the sport: baseball. Spectators saw the key pitching of Tom Heitz and Tom Wedl, and the expert fielding of Zimmv scoop up the first five victories. Then after a mid-season slump they picked up their winning ways and advanced to the tournaments. Thev worked their way to sectionals by defeating Fort Atkinson and Whitewater in sub-regionals and Lake Mills in the regionals. Their win over Wisconsin Heights qualified them to meet Madison East and a chance at the state title. MVP this year was Tom Stauss, who was chosen for All-Conference First Team for his outfielding. Heitz and Zimmerman received honorable mention for shortstop and third baseman, respectively. Heitz was also voted captain of the team. With nine juniors and two sophomores returning next year, Coach Smith and his team will be battling closer to the place of Badger Conference Championship. Captain Tom Heitz — Honorable Mention All-Conference Junior Tom Wedl will be returning as pitcher next year IEFFERSON OPPONENTS 7 Watertown 5 14 Johnson Creek 11 10 Lake Mills 2 o Monroe 4 23 Palmvra 2 1 Monona Grove 7 3 Sun Prairie 7 15 Lake Geneva 4 0 Edgerton 4 12 Fort Atkinson 4 7 Beaver Dam 4 0 Stoughton 2 0 Middleton 7 4 Fort Atkinson 2 o Whitewater 4 3 Lake Mills 2 10 Wis. Debbie Hotter — MVP in Girls Track Coach gives last minute instructions. Greg Linse Goes To State Bad weather, including snow, seemed to plague both track teams. For example, the co-ed Jefferson Relays were rained out twice! A third try to host the relays finally proved to be successful. What became daily routine for both teams — warm-ups, coach talking to the teams, running indoors (up and down halls and stairs), and if the weather was good, going outside to the track and or field. There were several participants whose dedication to track showed their determination to be good in a certain area. Debbie Hotter and Kevin Wenzel went on to sectionals in the hundred yard dash. Their efforts paid off. Debbie placed second; Kevin placed fifth. Greg Linse showed great adaptability as he went on to sectionals in both the high and low hurdles. Greg qualified to advance to the state level of competition in the low hurdles. Debbie Hotter and Greg Linse were chosen Most Valuable Players bv their teams. Greg Linse — MVP in Boys Track practice goes co-ed. Track 23
