Anita Pineda Wins MVP Strength, determination, agility, and poise are essential in gymnastics. Patience to learn new stunts and routines. discipline, mastering of equipment and the stamina to perform in front of people has created a new type of girl athlete. Although they have just started to scratch the surface of girls sports, they are here to stay. The turn out for gymnastics was still relatively small. Since there were so few participating in intermediate and optional levels, the gymnasts had about half the scoring power as their opponents. Coached by Vicki Van Galder, they placed fifth in the Badger Conference. Junior Anita Pineda, one of two all-arounds, was chosen most valuable performer. Judy Hans: First female MVP. TENNIS. ROW 1: J. Hans, D. Springer, A. Fellows, D. Hotter, D. Hans, S. Walters, G. Amaya, A. Marez. ROW 2: C. Hotter, D. Grahlman, K. Siegler, Coach Wilson, K. Miller, M. Grahlman, M. Piaquadio, D. Bradley. Four Players Compete At State Judy Hans was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the girls' tennis team by the players. This was the first time a Most Valuable Player was chosen for a girls' sport. Judy received this honor after she and three others competed in the State Regionals at Madison East where she won her first match. She also placed third in the first single's match at the Badger Conference Meet in Stoughton. Anne Fellows also placed at the conference meet, earning third position of the second single's match. Six other girls participated in this meet. The fifteen tennis players, thirteen of whom were rookies, practiced and developed their skills under the guidance of Coach Wilson. The only two returning players from last year's squad, Gloria Amaya and Debbie Hotter, both earned their letters along with three first year girls: Anne Fellows, Judy Hans, and Kathy Siegler. i Like the aquatic seal. Jessica Dempsey uses her nose to balance the ball. The girls' basketball team barely survived the season without a manager. Forgetting the towels and basketballs might seem trivial, but for the girls that gave their utmost determination and perspiration at Kettle Moraine, it proved to be one of those hardships one learns to endure. But despite the minor difficulties, the team finished with a conference record of 3 wins and 4 losses. They managed to break even overall with a 5-5 record. Coach Delany and the girls had the pleasure of practicing with Maria Lundgren, the Swedish AFS student. Maria was one of six seniors providing leadership for the three juniors and two sophomores. Ann Fellows was chosen honorary captain and Judy Hans, also a great asset to the team, was picked Most Valuable Player. They received these honors from their teammates for helping provide the knowledge and guidance that the girls needed to further improve their team.
