Realizing exactly what your limits are takes courage. And living by those boundaries requires an even greater strength. Every athlete does not always receive the recognition due him, so the athlete, as an individual, is being honored this year. Sacrificing to better yourself, but never feeling any gain is part of being an athlete. Understanding that we all can not be super stars and realizing the skills we do have is half the battle. Using these skills to our fullest is the victory. Therefore, athletes, the 1974-1975 yearbook is dedicated to you. What happened between those two days, Jefferson football fans will never forget. One of the best football teams ever to take to the gridiron won eight straight games. This was a good enough record to earn a share of the Badger Conference Championship along with Middleton who brought the Eagles their only defeat of the season. The key to the Eagle game was the experience of the senior players and the guidance of the coaches: Mr. Knoblauch, Mr. Jones and Mr. Smith. In the middle schools rating the Eagles were at one time No. 1 in the state but finished the season in seventh place. The players were honored at the annual potluck football dinner where it was announced that the Eagles held eight positions on the first all-conference teams. On the offensive team the Eagles had four unanimous choices: Tom Stauss at a halfback, Joel Petty at end, Randy P. Zimmerman at guard and Tim Hetzel at tackle. On the defensive team the Eagles also .had four positions: Hetzel at tackle, Paul J. Olsen at defensive end, Stauss at defensive back and Zimmerman at linebacker. Zimmerman received both the Most Valuable Player Award and Best Tackier Award. Brian exhibits excellent form. Coach Knoblauch accepts the Schweiger Scrapbook. JV FOOTBALL. ROW 1: J. Prust, R. Football 11 Freshmen Win Harrier Awards Although the Cross Country team did not compile an outstanding record this season, it did provide good experience for building future teams. Only three senior lettermen will not be returning next year. They are Ron Follensbee and co-captains Jeff Haas and Dave Kukla. The majority of this year's harriers were freshmen and the Most Valuable Player award went to a member of this class, Steve Shilkey. Another member of the class, Brian Schroedl, won the Most Improved Player award. With these outstanding runners in the upcoming sophomore class,Coach Pennington feels that he has the nucleus for future teams that should prove much more successful in the next few seasons. It takes real coordination to run and smile for the photographer at the same time. VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY. ROW 1: B. Schroedl, R. Follensbee. J. Vogel, S. Shannon, J. Alviar. CrossCountry 13 First Year For Girls' Volleyball The girls of Jefferson High School were offered volleyball as a new interscholastic sport this year. Forty-three girls signed up for the team. Coach Delany had the task of cutting the team to fifteen players who were capable of spiking, setting, digging, and serving the ball. She then had to teach the girls proper technique, correct positioning, and suitable plays. The young team consisted of three seniors, four juniors, six sophomores, and two freshmen. They worked hard to achieve success, but unfortunately, the efforts of the team and Coach Delany failed to produce a winning season. In fact, they succeeded in winning only one match. This was against Edgerton with a final score of 2 out of 3 games. The team elected Carol Erie as Most Valuable Player, and Jessica Dempsey was selected as Captain. VOLLEYBALL. ROW 1: A. Kramer. A. Four Players Compete At State Judy Hans was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the girls' tennis team by the players. This was the first time a Most Valuable Player was chosen for a girls' sport. Judy received this honor after she and three others competed in the State Regionals at Madison East where she won her first match. She also placed third in the first single's match at the Badger Conference Meet in Stoughton. Anne Fellows also placed at the conference meet, earning third position of the second single's match. Six other girls participated in this meet. The fifteen tennis players, thirteen of whom were rookies, practiced and developed their skills under the guidance of Coach Wilson. The only two returning players from last year's squad, Gloria Amaya and Debbie Hotter, both earned their letters along with three first year girls: Anne Fellows, Judy Hans, and Kathy Siegler. Girls'Tennis 15 Anita Pineda Wins MVP Strength, determination, agility, and poise are essential in gymnastics. Patience to learn new stunts and routines. discipline, mastering of equipment and the stamina to perform in front of people has created a new type of girl athlete. Although they have just started to scratch the surface of girls sports, they are here to stay. The turn out for gymnastics was still relatively small. Since there were so few participating in intermediate and optional levels, the gymnasts had about half the scoring power as their opponents. Coached by Vicki Van Galder, they placed fifth in the Badger Conference. Junior Anita Pineda, one of two all-arounds, was chosen most valuable performer. The girls' basketball team barely survived the season without a manager. Forgetting the towels and basketballs might seem trivial, but for the girls that gave their utmost determination and perspiration at Kettle Moraine, it proved to be one of those hardships one learns to endure. But despite the minor difficulties, the team finished with a conference record of 3 wins and 4 losses. They managed to break even overall with a 5-5 record. Coach Delany and the girls had the pleasure of practicing with Maria Lundgren, the Swedish AFS student. Maria was one of six seniors providing leadership for the three juniors and two sophomores. Ann Fellows was chosen honorary captain and Judy Hans, also a great asset to the team, was picked Most Valuable Player. They received these honors from their teammates for helping provide the knowledge and guidance that the girls needed to further improve their team. The defeats were often close and went into as many as three overtimes. The team finished the season with an overall record of ten wins and eleven losses under the direction of Coach Leipold. The team played the entire season with enthusiasm and excitement. This spirit was kept alive through the leadership of cocaptains Tom Heitz and Joel Petty, and the impressive backcourt duo of Tom Stauss and Tom Wedl. These juniors led the team in scoring. Tom Wedl was named to the second of the All-Conference teams, while Tom Stauss received Special Mention. Senior Tom Heitz was chosen Most Valuable Player of the team. VARSITY BASKETBALL. Basketball 19 Sonnenbergs Keep On Winning Everyday after school, a group of guys rushed up to the girls' gym and sweated away the hours. They were the grapplers — the guys you saw rushing to the whirlpool room or the workout room trying to lose weight and build up their muscles. However, they were always first in line at the bake sales. They would go days without food and get dehydrated, but with their vitamins and salt tablets they managed to survive and somehow make their weight. After matches they dined on steaks and fried potatoes. Through all this struggle the mat-men finished with the best meet record since 1960 with a 10-3 overall record and a 4-3 in conference. Four Eagles participated at the Sectionals: Dick Koch, Lee Schiferl, Dave and Steve Sonnenberg. Dick and Dave placed third, and Steve placed second which qualified him for State. The Sonnenbergs again walked off with the honors, with Dave receiving the Dan McGinnis award and Steve the Most Valuable Player award. 'Steve, where did you say you were going after the match ? Greg Linse Goes To State Bad weather, including snow, seemed to plague both track teams. For example, the co-ed Jefferson Relays were rained out twice! A third try to host the relays finally proved to be successful. What became daily routine for both teams — warm-ups, coach talking to the teams, running indoors (up and down halls and stairs), and if the weather was good, going outside to the track and or field. There were several participants whose dedication to track showed their determination to be good in a certain area. Debbie Hotter and Kevin Wenzel went on to sectionals in the hundred yard dash. Their efforts paid off. Debbie placed second; Kevin placed fifth. Greg Linse showed great adaptability as he went on to sectionals in both the high and low hurdles. Greg qualified to advance to the state level of competition in the low hurdles. Debbie Hotter and Greg Linse were chosen Most Valuable Players bv their teams. Greg Linse — MVP in Boys Track practice goes co-ed. Track 23 Eagle Nine Have Successful Year Fans again saw the power of the Mighty Eagles as before in the fall. But now the season is spring and the sport: baseball. Spectators saw the key pitching of Tom Heitz and Tom Wedl, and the expert fielding of Zimmv scoop up the first five victories. Then after a mid-season slump they picked up their winning ways and advanced to the tournaments. Thev worked their way to sectionals by defeating Fort Atkinson and Whitewater in sub-regionals and Lake Mills in the regionals. Their win over Wisconsin Heights qualified them to meet Madison East and a chance at the state title. MVP this year was Tom Stauss, who was chosen for All-Conference First Team for his outfielding. Heitz and Zimmerman received honorable mention for shortstop and third baseman, respectively. Heitz was also voted captain of the team. With nine juniors and two sophomores returning next year, Coach Smith and his team will be battling closer to the place of Badger Conference Championship. The golf team was extremely successful with a dual meet record of 15 wins and 1 loss. Their season wins were 41 as opposed to only 10 losses. The golfers took first place at both of the eight-team invitationals. The most valuable golfer was Captain Dan Lev. This is the second year he has received this honor and the third vear that he has been voted captain bv his teammates. Dan lettered in golf for all four years of his high school career. He had the best shooting average since 19e 5. with a 38.7. Over the past two years he had 10 wins. 1 loss, and 2 ties in Badger Conference plav. Coach Rogers proclaimed Dan the R.P. of the golf team. The tennis team finished the season with 4 wins and 3 losses in conference play. I he overall record was 10-9. Ron Follensbee, chosen as captain, was also Most Valuable Player. Ron s individual record was 2 wins-5 losses. When teamed with Jeff Haas, another senior, the record improved to 5 wins cmd 2 losses. Ron. With this increase the editors and staff were kept busv designing layouts, writing copy, and trying to meet deadlines. The staff was well represented by all classes this year with three sophomores, five juniors, and five seniors, which made it truly an all-school project. Because of the outstanding football team this year, the annual staff decided on a different type of dedication. Since only the outstanding athletes always receive the publicity, the staff wished to recognize all athletes — the regulars, bench-warmers and managers — bv dedicating the 1975 J to them. The editorials seemed to be more than just words. The articles were well chosen; they gave students and teachers something to think about. Steve Lehmann, photographer for the PEN, was appointed editor for 1976. He has the leadership qualities to be chief editor and can undertake the responsibilities of the job. A new twist for the 1976 PEN will be Diane Petrick who will give the woman s point of view on articles. Both Steve Lehmann and Diane Petrick received scholarships to attend the newspaper workshop held in Whitewater during the last week of July. Mr. Stoltenberg acts as the advisor to the PEN. PEN Staff 33 Funds Raised By Food Sales Ruby red grapefruit and juicy Texas oranges were sold this year by FFA members in order to sponsor a free pancake breakfast. The event was held during FFA Week for the faculty, cooks, custodians and school board. Other activities sponsored by the group included parlimentary, judging, and basketball teams. Mr. Khan and Mr. Larson advise the club and Jim Weissman was this year's president. Another club that tempted everyone with delicious goodies was FHA. Many noon hours were sweetened by their bake sales. The funds raised were used to provide transportation to the Folk Fair held at the Milwaukee Colli-seum. The club also had several guest speakers who gave demonstrations at their monthly meetings. Mrs. Bretl is the FHA advisor and Teri Krebs was the president. The catchy slogan reproduced on a bed of napkins was the first effort of Jefferson Senior High School's newest organization, Drama Club. The main purpose for this organization is to give the students more experience in drama related areas. Not only will the students be acting but they will also be responsible for costumes, stage settings, lighting, and student directing. Although not too much has been accomplished this first year, plans are already underway for a performance in the fall. The play, Hanzel and Gretel, will be given for the elementary schools in the surrounding areas. Actors have been chosen and work on the scenes and costumes has been started. Three JSHS students were eligible to enter the state contest of speaking wizards after receiving A s at the district contest. Denise Sponem and Duane Hachtel received B's while Laurie Arndt received the only A. Denise reached the peak of her high school speaking career after three years of hard work and dedication. Since this was Laurie s first year of competition she will be returning during her senior year. Duane is a sophomore so he will have two more years to offer. Eight others advanced from sub-district to district. They were John Wurtzler, Diane Pineda, Dawn Gutheridge, Bob Mercer, Diane Pe-trick, Robbie Nodolf, Debby Hotter, and Steve Lehman. Jefferson Attends Festival Of Bands The Jefferson Senior High School Band was cordially invited to attend the Festival of Bands in St. Louis, Missouri. The invitation was accepted and on May 8, 140 band members and their 15 chaparones left for Six Flags Over Mid-America. When the time came to perform, the band played splendidly under Mr. Hartwig's magic touch. Funds for the trip were raised through pizza and fruit sales. Every band member became a salesman and was rewarded with enthusiastic community support. The band performed wearing their new concert ruffles and bow ties, first displayed to the public at the Christmas concert in December. Mr. Hartwig looks on the promotion of the fruit sale. Whitewater Choral Festival along with six other choirs. The choir worked hard to perfect songs for the festival, especially the emotion needed for Saul. Besides preparing for the Choral Festival and the Christmas concert, the choirs had to practice for the April contests. The mixed choir sang Jesus and the Traders, Sing to the Lord, and They Who Grieving Soweth. The girls chorus sang An Evening Scene, Miserere Mei, and In the Highlands. Individual members participated in the Solo-Ensemble Contest in March. Many received first place ratings which qualified them for the state contest held in Whitewater. Mr. Jewett was busy directing both choirs and assisting individuals with their contest numbers. Jane Landowski accompanied the mixed choir for all their performances. He was presented with a congratulatory telegram from Governor Patrick Lucey, a letter of commendation from Barbara Thompson, a new golf bag and cart, a check, and a bound book of letters from friends. Mr. Marshall has been the superintendent since 1947. During his twenty-eight years of administration, Mr. Marshall and the School Board have not only maintained but greatly improved the Jefferson educational school system. Under their direction and foresight, two new schools have been built and the other buildings enlarged. The latest addition to the Senior High included a much-needed swimming pool. Talk together That shows so much of the important things of life — to be able to put different cultures together and make all the people of the world live in peace. Somewhat with these thoughts in my mind I started out mv AFS vear, and surelv these thoughts followed me throughout the vear. I am very happy that I made so many friends that I will always remember. I also know that if I had not gone through this very enjoyable vear. I would not know so much about myself and others as I now do. All the people I have met. many of them other AFS ers from all the parts of the world, but also others have given me so much to pass on. Words are not enough to explain the feeling of gratefulness I have inside of me. All I know is that Jefferson with all its nice people will always stay in my mind, and remind me of something I wish you too could go through. 1 want to thank you all for making my AFS year such a nice one. I will remember you always. (Maria Lundgren) AFS 77 SOPHOMORES Rookies Of '77 Although we were often referred to as those squirrely or flakey sophomores, we are on our way up the ladder. Helping to take us up the ladder were the girls from our class on the gymnastics team, the boys on the winning JV basketball team, and Lane Kuske, who had the male lead in PAINT YOUR WAGON. Of course, there were a few disappointments — like losing the powder puff game at Homecoming against the seniors. And, when all excited about sponsoring a dance one Saturday night, the contract was cancelled because the lead singer was sick. Now that it is over, we can look at the past, smile, and say that things really were not too bad. We are, however, thankful that our year as rookie sophomores is over and are looking forward with anticipation to greater endeavors on our next rung up the ladder. Although both the Junior girls and boys participated in every sport, Tom Stauss was outstanding on our Conference Championship football team, in fact, as a Junior, he was the top scorer in the entire Badger Conference. Now, that we have finished our Junior year, we reminisce about our small ledge by the telephone as Sophomores, our Junior wall, and are looking forward to stepping on the Eagle in the main hall. Zehms Juniors 95 Mirandus The evening we all so eagerly awaited was April 19. The months, days, and even hours swiftly ticked by. It was truly a night to remember. Sixty-five couples attended, dancing to the music of Hot Wax. The highlight of the evening was the introduction of the king and queen and their court by Sue Hamann, our class president. Last year's prom queen, Sue Moldenhauer, crowned the royal couple. The post prom, which lasted from 1:30 to 3:30, was held at Meadow Springs Country Club. An old-time band, the Rhythm- Aires, entertained the prom guests. This eventful evening was made possible through the efforts of the Junior class under the direction of the general co-chairmen, Terry Shannon and Janet Piek, and the prom advisor Mr. Lia. Bev Biederman and Steve Vogel decided to sit this one out. Queen Bunny and King Dan. Graduation and summer vacation were on everyone's mind. Those last days we seemed possessed with the idea of getting out. Friction amongst students, and between teachers and students, mounted. Assignments were half done or not done at all. After the wave of frenzy passed we seemed to be ourselves again and enjoyed each other for the few remaining weeks before we went our separate ways after graduation. JeffTraeder WadeVanValin Don't worry, it's only soda. John Vogel 116 Seniors Sandy Walters Phil Weber Other high school grads have told us to enjoy high school while it lasts because it is the best time of our lives. Well, we enjoyed ourselves and did some growing up. Reaching the age when we were called adults and accepting the responsibilities was hard and many scars will always remain. Growing up together made things a lot easier though. After all, being called squirrelly and irresponsible is not as hard to bear if you are not alone. We have been classmates since grade school, but it is the high school friends that we will want to keep in touch with and will never find the time. You see, we grew together and now we will grow apart together. JimWedl JimWeissman Janet Wellnitz Amy Wendorf Seniors 117 SENIOR SUMMARIES ANNETTE ADLER. Student Council 3,4.
