The J Story concerns you in 1963--The sports you played and watched, the classes you attended, the parties you enjoyed, the friends you made. The J Story, now a pleasant memory to you, is here relived each time you wish to remember—a name, a face, an event. We are indebted to you for the enthusiasm, time, skill, and encouragement which you have given to each of us. We are indebted to you for all this, but we are most grateful for your guidance and your effervescent, ever-present sense of humor. As students in your history classes, we learned much practical knowledge. We appreciated your guidance as our Junior class advisor. The boys have learned the true worth of sportsmanship through your capable coaching of track, cross country, and wrestling. We thank you for your sincere interest in us and reluctantly say good-bye. 4 Mr. Church Mr. Croft BOARD OF EDUCATION We sincerely appreciate all the time and efforts which you, the members of the Board of Education of Jefferson High School, have given unselfishly. Under the guidance of President Sidney Church, you have established high standards for our school and have helped to make Jefferson High School a place where we can grow intellectually, socially, and physically. We, the Seniors, have enjoyed our four years here at J.H.S. We are certain that our new school which is now being constructed will be a part of us as well as a part of all those who enter its halls. LEFT, TOP TO BOTTOM: Mr. Bauch, Mrs. Beyersdorf, Mr. Tully, Mr. Hickey. RIGHT, TOP TO BOTTOM: Mr. Kiesling, Mr. Lucas, Mr. Laatsch, Mr. Connelly. Mr. Richard J. Marshall Superintendent of Schools Just think, Mr. Marshall, four wonderful years on the hill have passed and here we are nearing that time when each of us will go our separate ways. Before we go, we the class of 63 wish to extend both our many thanks to you for all you have done, and a wish of good luck to you in the new high school. Mr. Carl J. Hager Principal of Schools We take this opportunity to thank you, Mr. Hager, our Principal, for the thoughtfulness you have shown the students, the school, and the community. You are always ready to encourage us, and helpfully show us our errors. We are indebted to the consideration you have shown us. This year, like last, we were again fortunate to have two hard-working office girls, Mrs. Jan Emery and Mrs. Delores Stauffacher. They have aided both the faculty and the students in many ways. For their hard work, they deserve our many thanks. The class of 63 wish to give our sincere thanks to you, Mr. Davies, for helping many of us through the troubles that arose in Grade School and aiding others of us when we needed guidance in high school. With the help of Mr. Stetson, our class advisor, we chose our class officers. We were also well represented in other extracurricular activities. Our class was really proud to receive first place on their Homecoming float, with the theme of We'll Conduct a Victory. We also received our long-waited class rings late in October. This was a thrill for we had changed the style of the ring, having a larger size for the boys and a smaller sweetheart size for the girls. The biggest event of the year was the Junior Prom held on April 26. It will remain in our memories as one of the most fun-filled nights of our high school days. To belong to this highly sought after club, a student must show achievement in each of these fields. Members must have a minimum of a B average and must maintain that average throughout their Junior and Senior years. Under the strict controls set up by the National Honor Society, the faculty this year elected four Seniors and six Juniors. Three Seniors were again re-elected. Mr. Robert Flegl is the advisor of the Jefferson Chapter of the National Honor Society. Every student of Jefferson High School should strive to live up to the standards of N.H.S. both in school and out of school, for the image each builds during high school will live forever. This year the choir, under the direction of Mr. Jewett, had ninety-two members. Every fifth hour ’’Alleluia's and America's could be heard throughout the entire school when the choir rehearsed for its three concerts. In October, at the Pops Concert, the choir sang selections from The King and I and West Side Story. After this concert they started practicing for the Christmas Concert. After Christmas, practice began for the Music Festival at Whitewater which was held on May 11. In the meantime several choir members practiced diligently for the district Solo and Ensemble contest held at Whitewater. Our Madrigals, Sophomore girls' triple trio, and Steve Swanson received first at Whitewater, and Steve and the triple trio went to State and received second place awards. After careful deliberation, Mr. Jewett chose, Let there be Song, Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair, and Alleluia for the choir's songs at the music contest. At Whitewater, the choir received firsts from all three of its judges and was the only Class B choir to get a first rating. 49 BOTTOM ROW: J. Steffens, P. Fischer, J. Wedl, S. Schopen, J. Lehman, J. The season was one of explosive touchdown plays, uncommon injuries, mistakes, and sometimes frustrations. Despite these handicaps, the Jefferson Eagles did a fine job. The entire team worked extra hard to overcome these thus enabling the team to do a fine job. The height of the season was the Monona Grove game in which Jefferson was the only team to score against the strong M. G. Silver Eagles. Ross Gordon, Jefferson's slotback, broke away for a 77 yard touchdown run. Gordon was also the leader of most of his team's individual statistics. He was first team all-conference halfback and led his team in rushing, pass receptions, and pass interceptions. The entire team did a very fine job and deserve much credit for their fine efforts. —SCORES — JEFFERSON SCHOOL OPPONENT 6 Waterford 14 13 Monroe 0 19 Middleton 13 18 Wisconsin High 7 7 Edgerton 19 0 Stoughton 26 6 Monona Grove 13 13 Fort Atkinson ★Non-Conference 20 Most Valuable Player--Ross Gordon Captain—Bob Bauch ALL-CONFERENCE 1st Team Halfback—Ross Gordon 2nd Team Center--Bob Bauch 2nd Team Guard--Larry Ley Hon. Two weeks before school started, the football teams started practice. The practices were rough and tough and the boys also had to contend with the heat and mosquitoes. This year's JV team, led by Coach Del Olson, had a tremendous record of four wins and two losses. Both losses were non-conference games. It is the desire of this team to remain undefeated against all future conference teams. The highlight of the season was our game with our rivals--Fort Atkinson. The mighty JV Eagles beat the Cardinals by a score of 13-6. This year's team showed a lot of enthusiasm and spirit. The team, consisting of sophomores and juniors, showed a lot of possibility for the Varsity Squad next year. A very fine team spirit and a genuine desire to win made the 1962 JV Football Season a great success. We are all very proud of our Junior Varsity team this year and feel confident that they will do a very fine job as members of the Varsity Squad next season. —SCORES — JEFFERSON SCHOOL OPPONENT 6 Monona Grove 0 14 Edgerton 0 13 Milton 0 13 Fort Atkinson 6 12 Watertown 24 12 Madison Edgewood 32 71 1st ROW--Manager M. Milling crowds—happy he arts--gay spirits, each a distinct part of the game of football. For the Varsity games on Friday nights, the bleachers are packed with rooting adults and students. But, these boys were merely little lone Freshmen. Not too great of a crowd usually turned out to see them fight toward victory. To them, the competition was still as keen as that of the Varsity Squad. At any rate, in victory or defeat, they fought as hard as they could to reward Jefferson with another victory. And so it went throughout the year--they played with little support but with a great deal of enthusiasm in spite of this fact. Since the Freshman Football Team is the hope of the future Varsity and Junior Varsity teams, we feel that this year's Freshman Team will do their best to help the Eagles on their way to many victories. These boys deserve much credit for their performances throughout the season. We will be seeing a lot of these boys in the years to come. 72 BOTTOM ROW—T. Heine, T. Noble, B. Schopen, R. Palm, C. The team had an overall record of three wins and ten losses for the entire season. Only two squad members are lost by graduation; and with eight lettermen returning, our outlook for next year looks very promising. This year's freshman team was quite impressive. With a little more experience, they will be a great asset to the team next year. The Eagles finished third at the Regional Tournament, but failed to qualify anyone for the state meet. The only two seniors on the squad, Dan Hachtel and Bob Griesemer, performed very well in their final year at JHS. At the Conference Mefet, Dick Heine won the honor of Conference Champ. Dan Hachtel and Mick Will-man took seconds at the Meet. Tom Heine and Bob Griesemer received thirds. At Regionals, Dick Heine, Tom Heine, Mick Willman, and Bob Griesemer received seconds. Dan Hachtel and Ron Hachtel received thirds. Despite Jefferson's many losses, the team always showed strong determination, good sportsmanship, and the will to win. At the close of the season, the squad elected Dick Heine as Most Valuable Wrestler. They chose Dan Hachtel as captain for the 1962-63 season. The boys also agreed that Tom Heine was the most improved wrestler and that Mick Willman and Ron Hachtel were the most promising. If there were to be an award for effort, we would have to award it to every member on the squad. They all showed a very fine job. This year's basketball team was led by two fine senior athletes, Tom Fischer and Ross Gordon. Both these boys will be missed next year. Tom Fischer was voted as this year's team captain and also received honorable mention on the All-Conference team, as did Ross Gordon. Mike Morgan was the team's leading scorer and ended up 6th in the conference scoring race. Mike was elected the Most Valuable Player by his teammates, and he also received honorable mention on the All-Conference team. A new award was won by A1 Pruefer for having the best free throw percentage for the season. (.856) With the new school and gymnasium well under way, this year will probably be the last in the old gym. Regardless of past records and performances here, it will hold a place in the hearts of many past players and coaches. —SCORES— JEFFERSON SCHOOL OPPONENT 49 Oconomowoc 39 55 Fort Atkinson 71 76 Reedsburg 59 54 Wisconsin High 62 66 Monroe 78 88 Middleton 66 88 Edgerton 68 53 Monona Grove 62 76 Wawatosa East 74 58 Stoughton 59 69 Fort Atkinson 74 50 Wisconsin High 68 59 Monroe 79 85 Middleton 88 70 Edgerton 47 71 Monona Grove 95 69 Stoughton 75 58 Fort Atkinson 69 1194 Total Points 1233 Non-Conf e rence STANDING Coach Ken Leipold, Gary Meidl, Dennis Leedle, Steve Bockman, James Cregar, Roy Leschinsky, Steve Quant, Mike Buchach. They won their first four games, but then dropped their next five out of seven. They saved their best game of the year until the final when they whipped Stoughton on the Eagles floor 64 to 45. Coach Leipold felt that this game took some of the sting out of the nine losses because the boys did so many things right. Coach Leipold said, thirteen boys wanted to prove they were better ball players than their record showed. Joe Hetzel and Jim Haubenschild led the team in scoring with 161 and 150 points respectively. Jim Haubenschild and Jim Cregar were the big men under the boards with 130 and 117 rebounds apiece respectively. The main weakness of the team was the infield. Throughout the season it developed quite well leading to a very fine season. The entire team has worked hard all season and deserve much credit. The team consisted of four seniors and the rest underclassmen. Under the capable managership of Mr. Leipold, our volleyball team had a good season. With Bob Bauch and Larry Kiesling being the only two seniors on the team, we should see a lot of action and a very fine record from these boys next year. With a little team effort from everyone we should be seeing the Jefferson Eagles at the top of the conference standings. STANDING—Coach Ken Leipold, J. Haubenschild, B. Buach, D. Leedle, L. Korth, R. Last year's big scorers were missing and underclassmen had to carry the load. Erik Gilbertson was the team's top point man and also broke two school records. In addition, he won the 180 low hurdles at the Conference meet enabling him to participate in the State Meet. His time in the low hurdles was the second fastest in the State this year for Class B schools. The entire team did a very fine job throughout the season. BOTTOM ROW--R. Biederman, R. Schroedl, G. A large number of very promising boys were out this year which gives us every reason to believe that the team will be stronger next year and will improve their season's record. As a climax to their fine season, they beat Madison East by a score of 9-0. The team chose A1 Pruefer as their captain for the 1963 season. BOTTOM ROW—A. Pruefer, M. Morgan, S. Church. MIDDLE ROW--H. It is a demanding sport which requires that all participants run over a measured course, usually 2.2 miles in length. We had a small team this year but very enthusiastic. They made a fine showing at Sectionals despite our last place finish at the Conference Meet. All the boys did a very fine job. ACTIVITIES JUNIOR PROM April 26, the class of 1964 presented their Junior Prom Sayanora. Dale Wagie and Teri Wedl reigned as king and queen. The court of honor consisted of class president, Chuck Schultz escorting Jane Rueth, vice-president, Roger Heideman escorting Pam Ritter, and secretary-treasurer Jim Westphal escorting Rosemary Widmann. With the help of Miss Klee, art director and Mr. Stetson, Junior class advisor, the gym was transformed into an Oriental garden. The Grand March, accompanied by the music of Bud Wilbur's Orchestra, was the highlight of this year's prom. A post-prom party, with the music of the Blue notes, was held at Meadow Springs Clubhouse, sponsored by the P.T.A. s Queen Teri and King Dale Post-Prom Party 83 The Big Night Lord Chuck Sam Rummary, Lady Janet WedI, and Class President Bob Bauch. SENIOR CLASS TRIP At 2:30 a.m., April 18, the seniors boarded the school bus and were on their way to O'Hare Field in Chicago. Their plane left at 6:30 a.m. On the way to Washington, they lost an engine, but landed safely in the nation's capitol at 10:00 a.m. Eastern standard time. Their bus driver immediately started them off on their tour. The first day, they visited the F.B.I. Building, the Washington Monument, the Wax Museum, the Ford Theater, and Lincoln's Memorial. Early Saturday morning, they started off again and visited the White House, Jefferson Memorial, the Archives Building, Arlington National Cemetery, the Marine Corps War Memorial, and the Pentagon. Sunday morning, they were free to attend Easter services at the church of their choice. In the afternoon, they headed toward Mount Vernon and passed through the quaint town of Alexandria, Virginia. Sunday night, they cruised down the Potomac and stopped at an amusement park before they headed back to shore. Monday, they ended their trip with a tour through the Capitol, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian Institute, and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. They left Washington at 7:30 p.m. and arrived in Chicago at 9:30 p.m. The wonderful thrill of flying, combined with the memorable sights they saw in our beautiful capitol city, will be something they will never forget. Smile! You're on Flash's camera! Ooooooh! Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells! Always friendly to underclassmen! ? Fellows are just cookin' up a party! Please! I'd rather do it myself! Caught in the act! Who me? We Will Always Remember It hardly seems like four years ago that we approached J.H.S. with mixed feelings of fear and apprehension. For many years we had dreamt of the time when we could climb the hill and could be in high school. As we entered the long corridors lined with lockers as lowly freshmen, we felt lost in a world of books, locker combinations, steps, classrooms, teachers, and seniors. We felt small and insignificant, not even knowing on which side of the corridors to walk. However, in a few days we knew what we were doing, but were not actually sure where we were going. Mr. Rogan, our freshman English teacher and class advisor, helped to acquaint us with the do's and don'ts of high school life and set us at ease with his sense of humor. Under his direction we elected class officers and won second prize on our Homecoming float with the theme, We've Got Em In Our Web. All the Homecoming activities were something special for us. We had seen the games and parades before, but now we looked at them in a different sense, because we were a part of them. A few of us joined clubs and some boys went out for various sports. In the spring we made out class schedules and could hardly wait to become sophomores. We planned a class party with crepe paper streamers, balloons, and all the extras. Each of us could admit that he had a good time. As we left school for summer vacation we felt important, but never regreted that we had been freshmen because we had learned so much already. When the leaves turned brown and fall approached, we again ascended the steps and got our schedules. Everyone wondered who his teachers would be and who would be in his classes. When school did start we seemed to fit into the routine. We again won second place on our Homecoming float with the theme, We'll Lay Em Flat. Mr. Hoffman was our class advisor and was willing to help us whenever we asked. More of us joined activities—the sophomore athletes, cheerleaders, and club members were the best and most active in our estimation. A few of our athletes were even initiated into the J Club. We will never forget the big day when the class ring salesman arrived and we chose our ring style. Up to this point, nothing more wonderful had happened to us. Our sophomore class party was a huge success! We left school in June thrilled to be upperclassmen. The time had flown and we were juniors already. Anxiously, we started school full of vim, vigor, and vitality realizing that our junior year would be one of utmost importance and of wonderful memories which we would treasure forever. We began to specialize more in our studies because many of us had already decided what our vocations in life would be. Mr. Stetson, our U.S. History teacher and class advisor, helped to guide us in our decisions. We won honorable mention on our float, We'll Cross The Golden Gate To Victory. The entire theme for Homecoming was Around the World in Eighty Days. We saw junior boys playing on the varsity teams and four varsity cheerleaders. In October we received our treasured class rings and our eyes seemed to shine just as much as the rings. The spring of our junior year holds many wonderful memories! Our junior Prom, Palace of Dreams, was the biggest social event of the school year and of our lives. Under the direction of Miss Klee, our art teacher and advisor, we transformed our gym into a beautiful gold-decked palace in which we played the roll of royalty. We chose Tom Aumann as our King and he crowned Nancy Jark his Queen. Our enchanted evening was an actual dream-come-true. 90 Paula Fischer, Kathy Connelly, and Gordon Gross were elected to the National Honor Society that spring, and in June we were represented at Badger Girls' and Boys' State by Kathy Connelly, Gordon Gross, and Bob Bauch. As we left school in June, we cherished a book of memories which would always find a soft spot in our hearts. In September 1962, we entered our school as seniors. The time which once seemed so far away had come, and we learned that we would have to accept greater responsibilities. We had grown with the help of our school and felt capable of attaining great heights. This year proved to be the most significant one of our lives, and each day we grew in knowledge which would help us when we left our school. Mr. Lippart, our P.O.D. teacher and class advisor, conducted senior class elections, and Bob Bauch was elected class president; Gordon Gross, vice president; and Erik Gilbertson, secretary-treasurer. Later in September we elected Student Council representatives and began to realize more than ever that we were the leaders. Ross Gordon served as president; Jack Miller, vice-president; Mary Sayre, secretary; and Gail Hamann, treasurer. At the awards assembly in May, they presented the school with a nine hundred dollar check for tennis courts at the new school as their gift. The J Club which was composed primarily of seniors was led by Ross Gordon, Tom Fischer, and Jack Miller. In October we had our Homecoming, Harvest Moon. Jackie Niebler was elected queen by the J Club and Gordon Gross, king by G.A.A. We won our football game, and the entire event was complete although our parade had a detour. Paula Fischer received the D.A.R. award in November. On December 28, Lady Janet Medl and Lord Sam Rumary reigned over a Midwinter Nite which was organized by Mr. Jewett. As the sound of Tonight floated over the soft, white snow, we danced in a winter wonderland. In the spring of our year most of us had made up our minds as to our futures. Janet Wedl was elected to represent our school on court at a track meet in Monona Grove. Our class play, Ramshackle Inn, starring Jeanette Hoffmann and Denny Willman was a success. Nancy Jark, Mary Sayre, Bob Bauch, and Erik Gilbertson were elected to the National Honor Society. On June 2, as we marched down the aisle to Pomp and Circumstance, led by Nancy Jark, valedictorian, and Paula Fischer, salutatorian, we had reached a milestone in our lives. As we received our treasured diplomas, our smiles were mixed with joy and sorrow—joy because we had reached a goal butlsorrow because we must leave you, our school. Although we complained about term papers, school work, hard tests, and grades, we will always be grateful to you, the teachers and school administrators who made our four short years at JHS so memorable and profitable. Wherever our paths in life may lead us, we will never forget our High School. We the Senior Class of 1963 leave Jefferson High School knowing that we leave behind some of the happiest days we will ever know. Senior Banquet Come on kids! Another dry run! ¥ Jackie Niebler, J.C. Scholarship Denny Willman, Alumnae Scholarship The Big Moment Class of 1963 Salutatorian and Valedictorian Honor Students Mr. Croft presenting diplomas This is the end in the sense that we, the seniors, will have no more classes, athletic events, concerts, dances, and good times within these walls. This is a beginning in the sense that we will go into the world to learn from and write the book of life. We will never forget JHS and the confidence it has given us in facing the future. We leave hoping that we have made our school better because we have been a part of it. Where we leave off, you, the future seniors, must continue. With our sincere appreciation to you, Jefferson High School, we say, goodbye, but in spirit we will always remain. THE END AUTOGRAPHS 95 AUTOGRAPHS 96 •zs : '•A • '-V 1 iH H • . A V N • v?
