Our new driver training program, the campaign for physical fitness, and our desire for competitive sports have all benefited from Mr. Wiehl’s sincere interest. 3 The 1962 J portrays another year of activity inside the doors of JHS. It records the sports the students have competed in, the plays they practiced for, the dances they decorated for, and all the good times they have had. The 1962 J is a part of these students because they are the ones who made the history which made it possible. They are the ones who had the spirit which gave this book a spirit to be passed on to future students of this school. INTRODUCTION 4 ADMINISTRATE N FACULTY Seniors: It has often been said that Man lives in three dimensions, the past, the present, and the future. As you look back on your past, your school days, I hope you will believe the efforts put into your school lessons and activities were truly a wise investment. As you think of your present, be certain to keep your thoughts on the future. It is well to remember that in a moment of thoughtlessness or impatience, action at such a time could alter your entire life. As you look at the challenges still to come, regard them as opportunities. Keep in mind that you live in a great country, a wonderful state, and a fine city. Look forward with a pride and a conviction that you, too, will do your part, your share, your very best to make them still better. The challenge is there! It is up to you! R. J. Marshall ADMINISTRATION Mr. Harold Davies, principal of the Elementary School, has a Bachelor Degree of Education, which he received at Whitewater State Teachers' College. He also has an M.A. Degree from the University of Wisconsin. We the class of 1962 would like to thank Mr. Davies for the guidance he lias given us during our past school years. 6 Class of 1962: You are a composite of things you say, the books you read, the thoughts you think, the company you keep, and the things you desire to become. To be successful you must have faith in yourself, faith in education, and faith in the future. I would remind you to look ahead and to keep cheerful. Lincoln said: I have noticed that most people in this world are about as happy as they have made up their minds to be. How about you? C. J. Hager ADMINISTRATION It is our pleasure to thank the office girls, Mrs. Janice Emery and Delores Stauffacher' for the many little extra things with which they have helped us. MR. Members in the Society must have a minimum of a B” average, and must carry on that average throughout his junior and senior years in order to be re-elected. The members are rated on the qualities of character, service, and leadership, and are chosen by the faculty. The season was highlighted by trips to the Milwaukee Journal Relays and the Madison West Relays, where JHS did very well. The team will be hurt by graduation, but this year' promising freshmen should help greatly in the years to come. This year’s tennis team retained only two lettermen from last year's squad. The gym was decorated to thetheme Silver Bells and to top it was a bell ceiling. Evergreen sprigs and holiday bows graced the tables while a huge crowd danced to Jim Kriewald's dance music. Our lovely Lady, Judy Raabe. and her Lord, Jesse Slechta, led the grand march. Following was the court; Willy Laesch and June Jordan, Doug Neumann and Betty Stengel. Joe Schopen and Joanne Gourlie, Bob Nielsen and Margaret Biewer, and Tom Dougherty and Mary Lu Gramling. And so the evening was over, ending with nothing but success. 52 Finally things shaped up for the big night. I could have danced all night --and most of us did! 53 'Palace of Dreams set the mood for plenty of dreaming on the night of May 4, the evening of the Junior Prom. A fine crowd danced to the music of Eddy Lawrence's Band. King Tom Aumann and his Queen, Nancy Jark, made excellent royalty as did their court. Class President Ross Gordon escorted Helen Ruth Schaffer, Vice President Jack Miller escorted Paula Fischer, and Secretary-Treasurer Tom Fischer escorted Sheri Rue. Under the direction of Miss Klee the juniors graced the walls with Fleur de Lis, Medieval castles, banners and elegantly designed crowns. Truly, it can be said that this prom was a total success. union Pnom 54 55 Rain canceled the Thursday night parade and it was postponed until Friday afternoon . The parade proved to draw quite a crowd as it made its way through town. Float competition was narrow as the theme for all floats was Around the World. The Seniors placed first. Friday night came quickly and excitement grew as we prepared for the big game. Although we were defeated by Monona Grove, the boys put up a good fight and played a good game. King Tom and Queen Joan reigned over the dance in the Elementary gym, decorated to the Homecoming theme Around the World. And so ended another highlite of the social calendar of J.H.S. ■Homecominq 56 HOMECOMING COURT LEFT TO RIGHT: Leroy Loomis, Georgia Liebel, King Tom Gruennert, Queen Joan Wedl, Mary Tully, Doug Neumann. We were determined to show everyone that we were finally upperclassmen. We were well represented in all school organizations, extracurricular activities, and sports. The year was off to a good start by getting an honorable mention on our Homecoming float. Late in October we received our class rings for which we had waited so long. The Junior Prom, May 4, was the biggest social event of the year. Soon June was here and our successful year ended. R. Adams F. Aleff S. Anton L. Biewer M. Blayney B. Boltz V. Conkle K. Connelly R. Qnaduation Dr. Glen C. Eye 86 Mr. John B. Danforth Douglas Neumann 87 CLASS PRESIDENT: Willy Laesch CLASS VICE-PRESIDENT: Joe Schopen CLASS SECRETARY-TREASURER: Doug Neumann CLASS SONG: Climb Every Mountain CLASS FLOWER: Lavender Orchid CLASS COLORS: Lavender and White CLASS MOTTO: Follow Every Rainbow 'Til You Find Your Dream The class of 1962 is able to recall many, many wonderful memories. Yes, there was much sentiment underlying all of r!.:e formalities of our graduation on June 3. When we registered as freshmen in 1958. we were met with an entirely new manner and method of school life which took, of course, a lot of adjustment. Our advisor, Mr. Rogan, helped us over the bumps by instilling in our class a fine, true class spirit. As sophomores we ordered our class rings, under the guidance of Mr. Hoffman. We became more adept at high school life during that year; JHS was meaning more and more to us. We proudly claimed our homecoming float, Heads We Win: Tails They Lose. As the end of second semester rolled around, we felt as if the upperclass men no longer had it over us. Mr. Olson, our junior class advisor, and many of us did much to develop our class spirit when working on our homecoming float, We'll Emousify 'Em. This brought us an award of honorable mention. By the end of that year, the class felt as if it was really in the swing of things . Our yearbook records that the class of 1963 received a first-place award on their homecoming float, We'll Get Them in Dutch. Mr. Lippart, senior class advisor, guided us through our homecoming. Around the World in 80 Days. Our midwinter formal, Silver Bells, was a really big success — and it was a beautiful dance. Our senior year was. to us. our most important year. This was the year in which the class felt as if it was a part of JHS. Of course, we are glad to be out of school;” but we are sorry to break up our class which seemed to grow closer especially during the last year. 88 For the seniors this is the last segment of four memorable years at Jefferson High School, but for the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors this is only the beginning. This is only one volume in a set of yearbooks, which will never end as long as this school stands. 'v % rj r jj ■ • ■ • -xw,• • ’- •- •- p • r«r.. .w.J v h«v .......... _T r r%c M t l w.
