NIC A :QT LJ Y, 'Ihe most dcstructlve I1rc ln the history of the clty of Jcffcxson tot llly destroy ed the High School bulldlng Wednesday mornlng March 26 1924 Of thc naw p xrt of tht hulldmg only sectxons of the four wftlls remam The north end of the bulldmg wlnth lg the oldest part was not entlrely burned out However the buxldmg, 19 so badly wrecked that xt wlll be necessary to tear down the parts st1ll standmg The fire orlgmated somewhere ln the basement ln the south half of the bulldlllb Xvhen first dlscovered at 2 30 A M the basement was a mass of flames under the en tlre south half The water pressure was w ry low and the hrst stream of water dad not carry above the second floor After some mmutes the munlclpal w xtez works got more pressure on at the pumps and the hose lmes were more effectlxe ln the mean whlle the old steam fire engme was brought out and hred up Statloned on the Mllw au kee street brxdge xt soon added another strong stream of water for tht hremen The efforts of the firemen were dlrected to subdulng the flames ln order to save the north half of the bulldlng Just about thls tlme the Fort Atkxnson me truck arrlved on the Job wlth a large crew of men The heat was terrific and the lurld glare of the ascendmg flames llghtcd up the entire clty Occaslonal crashing of beams as celllngs and floors burned away and plunged mto the basement coupled Wllh the awful roarmg of the consum ng flames fllled the nlght axr wlth almost deafenlng H0156 Relentlessly the fue ate the wtals out of the building seemmgly unaffected by the streams of water playlng on lt Not until every mfiammable plece of that part of the bu1ld1ng had f Lllen m clmrred and burmng pleces mto the yawnmg cavlty of the basement dld the flames abate thelr fury Sectlons of the walls crumbled 1nto a complete ru1n and desolatlon and the de structlon of the south part of the buxldlng was complete In the meanwhlle the flames had rushed thelr way thru the protectxng brxck fue wall mto the north half of the bulldmg IH splte of the efforts of the fire fxghters to hold IMI' IXIIIN , ,Y lwjl AV rl 19 ffl ' T 34 O l O , I O lx V, , .
