Masque 8: Gavel, GAA 4, Commercial Club, FHA, Class Play, Quill, Choir, Glee Club, Band, Intramural 4, Pep Club, Home Room Officer 2, Home Ec Club Class of 48 s Address Four plus two and seven years ago our poor fathers set forth rn kindergarten the class of 48 W were young and rnnocent and very much frightened at the thought of attending school Mrs Mable soon ac customed us to the idea and we became interested ln the little green merry go round and the large realistic doll house Orlo Teresa Betty Pat Sally Sue Anne Foster Norma Dane john P Bill Webb joe and Mary Ann were all there the first day As we advanced into the grades we took part rn several musical operettas including jack and the Beanstalk Pmocchro Hansel and Gretel and Rumpelstiltskin Frfth and snxth grade brought our promotion to the top floor where we had the privilege of changing rooms for classes During these years several of us were members of a maxed chorus and several started instrumental lessons and were members of the second band Then came juntor hugh and our first years rn the new and strange high school burldmg We no longer had recesses but we could get a drink and talk between classes We were proud to be able to attend pep meetings and other high school activrtres but perhaps the high lights of our junior hrgh days were our junior high dances Here many a bashful boy and girl learned to dance and attended their first party with the opposite sex Many of the boys experienced their first taste of athletics by participating in jumor high football and basketball Junior high dramatics kept several of the girls busy giving readings and plays Days flew and the first thing we knew we were green freshmen We could choose what subjects e wanted to take and now we had a legal right to take part in the hrgh school activities The class grew as several students from country school came in town to enjoy our high school years wrth us Attending out of town football games and the hubub of music contest in the spring made our freshman year disap pear quickly a again and with it came the usual football season which found several of our sophomore boys playing frrst str ng Other athletrc events of the year included our unforgettable sophomore basketball team We were the first sophomores to represent the high school in the county tournament Although we didnt win the tournament and we didnt have a perfect record there wasnt a team in the county that walked away wrth their game wrth us Besides a successful baskeball season That Crazy Smith Family our class play was agreat success Spring came and we held our class picnic at Grotenhuis farm Our sophomore year melted away and nothrng but vivid memories of rt remained Well get to give the prom was our first thought at being juniors But before the prom came our class play A Mind of Her Own and the football and basketball season Our class was more strongly repre sented in the first string in football and of course those not playing football were dr :gently selling ho dogs popcorn etc to expand our class treasury Since there was only one senior out for basketball the team was practically unanimously junlors The spring music contest proved the music department very suc cessful as many groups won first ratings in State Contest and several won firsts in the National Contest which was held rn St Joseph Missouri After much dlscussion the class decided the theme for the prom would be The Land of Make believe Everyone w llrngly began work on the making of fairies elves castles pink elephants and the pastel colored false ceiling All our efforts were rewarded as that mght we enjoyed beau tnful decorations an original program a delicious dinner prepared by our mothers and a climaxing dance We finished our junior year by a rainy day picnic at Spring Brook Seniors so mighty Oh yes at last we were that and we were busier than ever Football started things and the end of the season found our team with its shares of victories Many wrote for the Qt ILL and the Annual Staff was chosen early in the year Basketball season came and we found we had a very outstanding team We were second hugh in the mldwest conference hating lost first place to Carroll by two points rn the final game In the tournaments we nualif ed for district The coming of spring brought music contest our class play Senior chapel Senior Sknp day and lastly Baccalaureate and Commencement We were through high school nothing was left of rt but our many memories And as we thought of it we hoped we had sufficiently prepared ourselxes for we knew It is a rough road that leads to the heights of success ' . .
