Iefferson Wms Over Lynn Vlew The Elks scored 1n the second and fourth quarters to take a 130 vlctory over Lynn Vtew The ftrst score came after a 55 yard dr1ve when Graham plunged over for the score The longest run of the dr1ve was a 20 yard dash by K1ll1on ln the fourth quarter Stanley Crawford ran 35 yards for Iefferson s second and last touchdown Iefferson drove w1th1n the 20 yard l1ne of Lynn Vlew a number of ttmes but tu t couldnt push the ball over for a TD Playmg outstandmg de fenslve ball for Iefferson were Wxtt Waggoner and Graham Central Rolls Over Elks ln the ftrst quarter Iefferson was w1th Central play for play lt was not unttl the second quarter that they could force thetr way over for a touchdown lefferson at tacked Central wtth a passtng attack com plettng ll out of 16 pass attempts for a total of 143 net yards Iefferson was held a num ber of tlmes on the goal l1ne by a strong Central defense Playtng outstandtng ball for lefferson were Waggoner Bayless B Holt Tate Hammer Green and Crawford In the last m1nutes of the game Holt threw a pass to Klllton wh1ch covered 50 yards before he was stopped As the game ended Iefferson was on Centrals goal l1ne The ftnal score was 27 0 Jefferson Downs Churchill lefferson who was held scoreless the llfSl half came back from thetr halftlme rest and scored two touchdowns to down Churchtll 140 The f1rst touchdown came when Vernon K1ll1on run around end for ftve yards and the TD In the fourth quarter Ioe Graham darted around left end for ten yards and the other TD Waggoner made one of the two extra pomt attempts Iefferson was on the verge of scortng when the fmal whtstle was sounded Iacksboro Edges By Ielierson Iefferson lost a heartbreaker to Iacksboro by a score of 14 13 Iefferson playmg lacks boro for the fxrst tlme 1n 1ts hlstory got behtnd tn the flrst half two touchdowns lust before the ftrst half ended Seals ran 55 yards for a TD but 1t was nulhfted because of a penalty In the second half Iefferson came back and fought hard and scored two touchdowns but couldnt ktck the second extra po1nt Ieffersons fxrst touchdown came when Graham ran 35 yards the longest run of the mght Vernon K1ll1on scored Iefferson s other touchdown Iefferson s stand outs were Seals Hammer and Greene Ielferson Scores Early and Late to Defeat Carter Iefferson scored only one touchdown the ftrst half Vernon Kllllon set the TD up wtth a Q0 yard punt return Two plays later Graham went 24 yards for the score ln the fourth pertod Carter scored but couldnt make thetr extra pomt Iefferson bounced back wtth two more touchdowns K1ll1on cored on an 8 yard run and Stanley Ctraw ford on a 15 yard run The fmal score was 20 6 lefferson s standouts were M1ller Craw ford Denton and Hammer Next on the schedule was Sevrervrlle wh1ch was thought by many to be the h1gh ltght of the season Due to clrcurnstances beyond our control 1t was canceled because of ram S1nce most of the players had played under Coach DIQQS Sev1erv1lles coach 1t was a dtsappomtment to the whole team Momstown Downs Iefierson Mornstown took advantage of the breaks to lead lefferson 200 the f1rst half Both teams fought hard the thtrd quarter but nelther team could push over for a TD Iefferson pushed down to the Hurrtcanes 12 yard l1ne before they lost the ball on a fumble ln the ftnal m1nutes of the game Morr1stown scored on a pass play to end the game 27 0 Playmg outstandtng ball for lefferson were B Holt Graham and Bayless Thts game along w1th the other games became memor1es of another football year for the Elks Some returned to thelr locker and hung up thelr sults for a spell wh1le others to be exact twelve semors hung up therr sults and turned to bld farewell to thelr team mates coaches and to thelr school Happtness mtngled wlth sorrow as thetr Alma Mater reached out her hand and satd A ftne Job my lads you dtd your best to br1ng prtde and honor May others follow 1n your path to carry on as you have done The halls seemed empty as they departed lett1ng thetr mlnds wander over the many happy assocxattons they had had 1n a sport dear to thetr hearts Memory llnqers on 62 1 . 1 1 1 1 - ' I ' I ' . , , 1 1 1 , . . 1 1 . 1 , , , 1 4- -9 . . 1 1 I I. . , . . 1 . 1 - 1 1 , 1 1 r- - - o , 1 . 1 . .IEFFERSUII IIIGII ELKS By Ioe Holt Stanley Crawford Th1s fourth ed1t1on of the Elk Echo would not be complete w1thout rev1ew1ng play by play the games of the 1955 Elk team But before we QIVG th1s account let us pause to pay trlbute to another trne team and our semor boys who played thelr hearts out to brtng vxctory to our Alma Mater Ole Iefferson Hlgh and to keep her colors flytng To our coaches Coach lack Wade and Coach Vernon Caldwell who have worked hard w1th us th1s season we wlsh to express our apprec1at1on Thelr road was a rough one but they stayed wrth us through thlck and th1n Agam we would l1ke to say to our coaches Well done And now to ment1or1 the sen1or boys who have played then' last game for leffer son I-hgh We would l1ke to pralse our capta1ns Gene Greene and Ioe Graham for the excellent Job they dld Our extra pornt heart out B111 Doby Holt who has lettered three years d1d a good Job as rlght tackle Iames Hammer who came through and played rlght end for the Elks Stanley Craw ford who played fullback for us d1d a great Job Gordon W1tt who played good defenslve ball for us Ioe Holt who played quarterback for the mrghty Elks The boys who worked hard durmq practlce and made Edward Beaver KHBJ hmmy Moyer CED our team what 1t was but d1dnt get to play all the t1me Kenneth Arnold Arthur Arnold R G Lowery and Edd1e Carathers These boys have fought hard for Iefferson Hlgh but must move on and let others play now We were honored to have three boys on the All East Tennessee Honorable Mentlon Team We would l1ke to hand them our congratulatlons they are G1lbert Waggoner Vernon Klllxon and Roy Bayless Now that we hate revrewed the team we w1ll go on and revlew the games Iefferson Downs Newport letferson started 1lS season Wlth a hlgh powered offense as they downed Newport Gamecocks 33 to 13 leffersons ace back Vernon Ktlllon returned the open1ng k1ck off for 88 yards lefterson held Newport for touchdown wrth Graham runnlng around left end Newport scored only one touch down the f1rst half aga1nst Iefferson s green but aggresswe defense Late 1n the second quarter K1ll1on scored on a forty yard pass from quarterback Ioe Holt As the second half began lefferson scored twxce more Once wlth a 7 yard plunge by Graham and by a forty SIX yard dash by Vernon Klllron Newport managed to push the ball across once more ln the second half before the ballgame ended Betsy Defects Ieiferson lefferson held powerful Betsy scoreless the f1rst quarter but then the hlghly pollshed Betsy offense began to cl1ck Iefferson fought back Wllh the sp1r1t to w1n and ln the last minutes Vernon K1ll1on scored on a 25 yard sprtnt Sure toe Waggoner put the ball between the uprlghts for the extra polnt Waggoner was also a defenslve standout The bxg man for Betsy was McCall one of the better backs 1n the state Last year Iefferson eased by Betsy 12 7 but thts year xt was a drfferent story Betsy out powered Iefferson for a 31 7 w1n lCon'1nued on next pagel 'What we ve done we leave before you I 3 , I 1 I I ll I n I u . . . , . . ll ll 'H - ll ll ' I Il ll kicker' Gilbert WGqgOner,'WhO played his four downs and then marched for another .
