SENIOR CLASS HISTORY By Shzrley Cam ln the fall of September 1951 133 Freshmen enrolled ln the new Iefferson Hlgh School The boys led with a total of 72 whrle the grrls had only 61 We did not feel llke green freshmen as most freshmen do because we were not the only on s that couldnt fmd our way around The upper classmen and the teachers became lost rn thls new bulldlng As the year progressed we became better acquamted wxth the school the students and teachers We developed the school splr1t and lomed ln the actrvltles We chose the followmg offlcers President Conme Sue Wrlson Vxce Presrdent Shirley Cam Secretary Ioe Graham and Treasurer Buddy Rommes We selected M1ss Marlon Whxtaker M1ss Esther Blanc and Mrs Ioe Chapman for our sponsors they were to keep us rounded up The followmg boys went out to see what they could do ln football Robert Franklrn Ioe Holt Bllly Wade Holt Gllbert Waggoner Gene Greene and Ioe Graham We also contrrbuted m mbers to the basket ball teams Ioan Denton represented the Freshmen for the grrls team and Ioe Graham for the boys team Lrttle drd we dream that when Conn1e Sue was elected cheerleader and Anne malorette that they would be ervmg for four consecutlve years There were also several members rn the Band and the clubs Ioan Denton and Ioe Holt were elected for Mr and M1ss Freshman The most excltxng event for the Freshman Class was the trxp to Chrlhowee Park where we had the t1me of our llves Havmg emoyed our three months vacation 60 boys and 50 g1rls eagerly began the1r Sophomore year Lowell Churchman was chosen to lead us through the year VICE Presrdent Gene Greene Secretary and Treasurer Eddie Carathers Reporter Ioe Graham served us well For sponsors the class selected Miss Betty Peck Mrs Max Moore M1ss Esther Blanc who was later replaced by Mrs Gene Btvens Our faith ful slx boys agarn played on the football team Delmar Phrllrps Lowell Churchman and Ioe Holt were the only new members to play on the boys basketball team the Sophomore year Mary Allce Hale played on the grrls basketball team for the first tlme In the fall we had a Wrnter Carnival Thls was an excrtmg event because our own Mary Alice Hale and Grlbert Waggoner were crowned Kmg and Queen of the Carmval One of the most remembered high lrghts of the year was the class hayrlde and Weiner roast at Cherokee Dam a trlp whlch brought laughter when Tootsle Quarles lost her shoe Qf course we enloyed the trlp back to hunt for tt Conme Sue Wllson and loe Graham were elected M1ss and Mr Sophomore All too soon we found ourselves almost at the top of the stairs wxth Just one more round to go The boys st11l were ahead of the g1rls tn number totaled 55 whxle there were only 44 gxrls Smce Lowell Churchman had made a good Presx dent the year before we elected htm again to serve as Presldent along w1th Ioe Allen Cross as V1ce Presrdent Mane Quarles Secretary and Brlly Wade Holt as Treasurer We chose Mrs Quarles Miss Fanny Belle Sharp and Mrs Max Moore as our sponsors We had elght more boys on the football team thrs year along wrth those returning from the prevrous Betty Balley year They were Orvrlle Mills Iack Seals Bill Fine Dwight Denton Stanley Crawford Gordon Wltt I W Churchman and Burley Kmkead The same players went out for both the grrls and boys basketball team Agam the class was well represented on the basket ball court ln the band and Iune as cheerleader fBoy could she yelll Mary Fam and Bxlly Wade Holt were candldates for Kmg and Queen of the Fall Festzval Conme Sue Wrlson and Ioe Graham were elected Mr and Mxss Iumor Around 35 members Jomed the Beta Club and looked forward to gomg to the Beta Club Conventron rn Nashvllle The cllmax of the year was the Iumor Receptron The theme was Under the Sea and was really emoyed by all We would not forget our play Beauty and the Beef Now we fmd ourselves at the top of the starrs our last year at Ole Iefferson High 52 boys and 41 grrls began work wrth a tmge of sadness at the thought of leavxng our alma mater We elected Lowell Churchman Presxdent First Vice Presrdent Iune Scott Second Vlce President Conme S Wilson Secretary Rosella Cate and Treasurer Bally Wade Holt For our Sponsors we chose Mass Nelson and Mrs Norman Wrlght Bestdes the boys who played on the football team the three precedmg years there were R G Lowery Kenneth Arnold and Arthur Arnold out for the frrst t1m Gene Greene and Ioe Graham were elected Captain and Co Captam Our class was delighted to have Polly l-1111 along wrth Iune and Connie Sue as Cheerleader She really knew what cheerleadmg meant Her smxle always seemed to say Go Iefferson B111 Smlvers and Gordon Wztt were the only new boys out for basketball from our class Grlbert Waggoner was elected manager and Bllly Wade Holt score ke per Krtty Fraker was elected manager for the glrls team The followmg seniors played ln the band this year Don K1rk Ioanne Cochran Shrrley Cam Margaret l-lull Anne Mason Elsre Cam Wlllldm Fox lean finish mg hrgh school m three years The Semor play and banquet wxll always bring back wonderful memones Wlth graduatlon behmd and the antlclpated trip to Washington over the hxstory of the Senior
