SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The graduating class of 1969 entered Delphos Jeff¬ erson High School for the first time as eighth graders in September, 1964, possessing a unique spirit which we sustained throughout the next five years. As freshmen we became a structural pillar in the school foundation. We entered into the successes and failures of DHS with refreshing enthusiasm and bound¬ less energy. College-bound students slaved over Latin, and Biology reigned as the girls’ favorite subject, with the dissecting sections thrilling all of them. The fresh¬ man was easy to spot-he was always the one frantically kicking a stubborn locker, wandering in the hall in search of a classroom, picking himself or his books from the floor, or the one at the tail end of the lunch and drinking-fountain lines. Many of the girls were inducted into Y-Teens, and good-naturedly endured GAA initiation at the hands and mercy of the upper classmen. In sports the boys began to hold their own, providing new prospect and fresh abilities. During the sophomore year, the class gained a little more security, along with a heavier schedule. Along with the homework which began piling upon us, we became increasingly busy in band, choir, and girls glee. Boys lettering in sports were inducted into D-Club. As the end of the year rolled around, we chose our class rings, and began dreaming about another summer va¬ cation. As juniors the class of 1969 began to display quali¬ ties of leadership and ingenuity as we became more actively involved in clubs, music, and sports. We began our career as thespians by presenting a three act comedy, “It Happens Every Summer.” We also com¬ bined our talents and imagination in designing and creating the Junior-Senior prom with the theme of “Summer Place.” On September 3, 1968, the class of 1969 returned to Jefferson High School for our last year. We were finally Seniors; we had actually made it. Yet the exhilaration of being “top brass” was sobered somewhat by the realization that for many this was the last year we would share; for all graduating seniors, it would be the last year before we struck out on our own-whether we headed for college, the service, or immediate work. As seniors, the class of 69 became leaders in student and club government. It inspired the football, baseball, and basketball teams during the seasons and made its pres¬ ence known in all aspects of DHS. The class combined some of its skills and abilities with great success in presenting our Senior Class Play, a three act comedy, “Her Adorable Imp.” Not only was the class outstand- Left-to-right-Row 1-Cheri Turner, Historian; Brenda Line, Presi¬ dent. As a project the class donated $180 to Miss Christine Hongiford to help for a kidney transplant. Toward the end of the year as graduation approached, we were caught up in a whirl of dinners, parties, deci ¬ sions, and finals. On June 2, 1969, we stood poised on the threshold of our lives as adults in an adult world. For the class of 1969, the story had just begun, but already it was an individual one. 14
