As freshmen we became a structural pillar in the school foundation. We entered into the successes and failures of DHS with refreshing enthusiasm and bound¬ less energy. College-bound students slaved over Latin, and Biology reigned as the girls’ favorite subject, with the dissecting sections thrilling all of them. The fresh¬ man was easy to spot-he was always the one frantically kicking a stubborn locker, wandering in the hall in search of a classroom, picking himself or his books from the floor, or the one at the tail end of the lunch and drinking-fountain lines. Many of the girls were inducted into Y-Teens, and good-naturedly endured GAA initiation at the hands and mercy of the upper classmen. In sports the boys began to hold their own, providing new prospect and fresh abilities. During the sophomore year, the class gained a little more security, along with a heavier schedule. Along with the homework which began piling upon us, we became increasingly busy in band, choir, and girls glee. Boys lettering in sports were inducted into D-Club. As the end of the year rolled around, we chose our class rings, and began dreaming about another summer va¬ cation. As juniors the class of 1969 began to display quali¬ ties of leadership and ingenuity as we became more actively involved in clubs, music, and sports. We began our career as thespians by presenting a three act comedy, “It Happens Every Summer.” We also com¬ bined our talents and imagination in designing and creating the Junior-Senior prom with the theme of “Summer Place.” On September 3, 1968, the class of 1969 returned to Jefferson High School for our last year. We were finally Seniors; we had actually made it. Yet the exhilaration of being “top brass” was sobered somewhat by the realization that for many this was the last year we would share; for all graduating seniors, it would be the last year before we struck out on our own-whether we headed for college, the service, or immediate work. As seniors, the class of 69 became leaders in student and club government. It inspired the football, baseball, and basketball teams during the seasons and made its pres¬ ence known in all aspects of DHS. The class combined some of its skills and abilities with great success in presenting our Senior Class Play, a three act comedy, “Her Adorable Imp.” Not only was the class outstand- Left-to-right-Row 1-Cheri Turner, Historian; Brenda Line, Presi¬ dent. As a project the class donated $180 to Miss Christine Hongiford to help for a kidney transplant. Toward the end of the year as graduation approached, we were caught up in a whirl of dinners, parties, deci ¬ sions, and finals. On June 2, 1969, we stood poised on the threshold of our lives as adults in an adult world. For the class of 1969, the story had just begun, but already it was an individual one. 14 LOREN THOMAS ALSPACH ROBERT EUGENE ANSPACH LARRY JACK ARMSTRONG HARLAN DALE ARNOLD REGINALD ALAN BARDO DAVID ROLLAND BLOCKBERGER 15 RICKY J. Our record was not the best in Jefferson’s history, but far from the worst. There were many bright spots and our team spirit was always up to high standards as was our coaching staff. This team had the desire and the determination to win, but the lack of consistency in each facet of the game proved to be the team’s biggest setback. With Coach Burrey at his first year as head coach, his methods and ideas were new, but by the end of the year the team began to adjust and looked good as it won five out of its last seven games. This showed the determination of the boys as they came back and bettered their performances of the first half of the sea¬ son. With a few breaks these games could have been won. Through the efforts of the Student Council there was an attendant from each of the Senior High Classes. They were; Freshman Laura Wolery escorted by Jack Franks, Sophomore Marcia Bruns escorted by Harold Bilimek, Junior Quincy Atterberry escorted by Hal Krotzer, and Senior Monica Endres escorted by Dale Arnold. The climax of the evening came at the dance when Queen Cheri Turner was crowned by her escort Tom Truesdale. Queen Miss Cheri Turner escorted across the field by Tri-captain Tom Truesdale. Miss Tate, director of the play, was assisted by student directors, Rita McKinley and Sue Daulbaugh. The play revolves around four old people who meet semi-annually to report on their good works in their “Charities Anonymous Club”. This year it is held at the home of Flora Langley’s nephew, a small-town journalist in danger of losing his newspa¬ per to the grafting mayor. It turns out that Flora and her three old friends are actually retired crooks who use their old “modus operandi” for charitable pur¬ poses. Jeanie’s accused of breaking things, destroying things, and seeing things. Despite her denials, no one believes her, except her mother who still remains a bit pessimistic. Jeanie’s father refuses to believe all her “nonsense” and calls a woman psychologist to come and analyze her. Her tom-boy little sister, “Danny”, easily irritates Jeanie by mocking her. Jea¬ nie’s two girlfriends, Sheila and Midge, try to comfort her but Sheila wavers between being sympathetic and suspi¬ cious, while Midge is unsure and has a tendency to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Tommy Graves, Jeanie’s boyfriend, is torn between a fear of Jeanie’s crazy behavior and a desire to help her. As matters are compounded by a crabby neighbor and the police, the story ended in a manner that surprised everyone. Front Row—Left to Right—Linda Ness, Debbie Renner, Sheryl Swartz, Linda Place. The punch stand, a great place for conversation. I I I I 64 “SHANGRI-LA” “Shangri-La” was the theme of the annual Y-Teen Dance held on November 16, 1968. As the young ladies and their escorts walked through the doors of the music room, they entered an oriental paradise. On the walls were silhouettes of exotic dancers and gold temple masks. In one corner of the room was a formal oriental garden cen¬ tered around a life size Buddha. Music was provided by a popular group called “The Blueberry Circle”. Entertainment was provided by three Senior boys. They, showed off their talents by singing and imitating several of the more famous T.V. comedians. All in all, it proved to be a fun-filled evening for all present. CARNIVAL DANCE Lynda Sams and Doug Miller, Fresh¬ men candidates, were crowned King and Queen and reigned over the Carnival Dance which took place on February 8, 1969. The other candidates were Sophomores, Donna LaRue; Juniors, Sheba Arnold and Tim Ramsey; and Sen¬ iors, Marcia Fronk and Dave Hoffman. The candidates were selected by popular votes from their class. Votes were col¬ lected a penny per vote for the candidates of their choice, and the money was given to the P.T.A. for their yearly project. Student Council President Tom Brenneman crowns Carnival Queen Lynda Sams as King Doug Miller looks on. Left to Right—Dave Hoffman, Marcia Fronk, King Doug Miller, Queen Lynda Sams, Sheba Arnold, Tim Ramsey, Donna LaRue, Jerry Sampson. 65 PROM I ! “Some Enchanted Evening”, theme of the Junior-Senior Prom of nineteen hun¬ dred and sixty-nine, was centered around a Polynesian night. The ceiling flowed in mid¬ night and ice-blue streamers. Palm trees, tikis, birds in garland cages, and tropical fish accompanied the tables decorated with “exotic” flowers, by making the night truly enchanted. 66 m SENIOR DAY Miss Linda Ness receives Valedictorian honors from Mr. Blythe. Under the direction of Mr. Mark Downey the Council set a record by collecting five-hundred and eighty-three dollors for the P.T.A. King and Queen Contest. The Council also changed their constitution to make it more feasi¬ ble in the future. The Student Council also took over some school projects and elec¬ tions. For example the Council conducted the balloting for Home¬ coming and Cheerleaders. Beyond the con¬ stant rush for deadlines, schedules, and layouts, beats the true essence of Jeffer¬ son High School tradition manifested by the Delphi’s staff of editors, copy writ¬ ers, business manager, typists, advisor, and many others. No other body of workers at Jefferson strive to retain the memories of people, events, and customs which are so vital to the schools story. To earn points for their G.A.A. letter, the girls sold pop¬ corn at basketball games and took part in intramural games of basketball and volleyball. Also for the second consecutive year, those who were interested could bowl one night to earn points. In the early part of May, the G.A.A. joins those in Y- Teens for a huge picnic at Fort Amanda. Opening the year with the annual induction service, the Y-Teen welcomed several new members and Miss Leoris, our new advisor. We all enjoyed the meetings and projects we engaged in. Our winter formal with music by the Blueberry Circus, brought much success. The Oriental colors and designs made our theme, “Shangri-La”, seem very real. In March, at the Moth¬ er-Daughter Tea, Mrs. Catherine Wieging showed her slides of Africa. Ending the year with a picnic at Fort Amanda on May fourteenth, all the Y-Teen members had a profitable and very enjoyable year. D-CLUB The Varsity D-Club, under the direction of Mr. Koch, is an organization of those boys earning a varsity letter in one of the three major sports at Jefferson. The high school spirit this year was in part sparked by the high spirit of the D-Club. The D-Club buys carnations for the mothers on Parents’ Nights during the football season. It also sponsors a trip to Columbus to see an Ohio State football game, buys game film, and holds a “blow¬ out” at the end of the year for all boys participating in sports. The D-Club sponsors these programs by selling ads, selling programs for all athletic events, and has charge of the concession stand at all home basketball games.
