Senior History Tonight, asl put on my cap and gown, I could not help but remember the four years l spent in preparation for this event--four years of study, work and play. We have been a most industrious, and yet, a fun-loving class during these years. As freshmen, we were very sports-minded. The boys were Freshman champs in football and in GAA. the girls' basketball team won the intramural championship. That's teamwork! We were social-minded too, and oh, the excitement of our first formal dance! As all greenies are, we were rather confused at first in our new environment, but when our Sophomore year started we were rating to go, and we did! During this year, seven boys were initiated into the Varsity D-Club. The hard work and practice of the band and choir was worthwhile, because that year they both went to state con- ICSB. The next year we returned as Juniors, lead again by President Merlin Gould. Merlin had been our Sophomore presidentg Gary Poling our Freshman president. We started immediately on the Re-Echo and had our Hrst taste of journalism. Also, we had our first dramatic production, Professor, How Could Youl , which was worth all the ef- fort put into it. Then came the awaited moment, the night of our prom, Paradise Isle. I remember all the work gathering and assembling the parts for the fo1mtain. As the year drew to a close we had a class picnic, one of our happiest times together. In September 1956, we entered our final year at dear old D.H.S. with Jack Leeth as our president. We spent a lot of time and energy in building our yearbook, rehearsing for our class play, and capturing second place in the Northwest Conference. The big social affair of the year was the beautiful prom, given for us by the Juniors. Our graduation has come and gone, and we, with mixed emotions, are about to embark upon another great adventure. Boy's Athletic D Club To foster the spirit of good fellowship, increased by Sportsmanship, good athletics, honest and fair play . . . reads the constitution of the D Club. This objective is kept in mind as the D Club per- forms its various tasks. To be eligible for membership into the club requires a letter in any of the three major sports. The c1ub's activities include the selling of pop and programs at basketball games and programs at football games. The D Club members took their annual trip to Ohio State in the fall and saw the OSU-Indiana game. That's a familiar saying to the girls who sold popcorn at basketball games. This year the members of the Girls Athletic Association were very busy earning points for their letters. They did this by attending meetings regularly, serving on committees, working at basketball games, and partic- ipating in extra-curricular activities of softball, bask- etball, volleyball, hit-pin, and bowling. Girls Athletic Association Perhaps the most important event of the year was the GAA Athletic Banquet where all the athletes of the school were honored. -I 8 ABOVE: President Sharon. Band Rain, sleet, snow, or shine, thc show must go on---and it did, as the Wildcat marching band presented the football fans with another season of fine performances. The shows were based on such themes as Highlights, and See the U.S.A. After victorious games, the band paraded through the streets doing a snake dance. At out-of-town games and the Van Wert Peony Festival the band entertained the crowds with its dance steps and marches. As rewards for their hard work the band members enjoyed a trip to Columbus for the Ohio State-Indiana football game and a costume party where prizes were given for the best costumes representing foreign countries. The highlight of the party was a dinner of foreign foods. Speical thank-yous to band mothers for a wonderful evening and for all the things they did for us throughout the year! In February the music department was host to the Northwest District Music Festival. In April the band went to Ada to give other bands some stiff competition at contest. Their select number was Romeo and Juliet Overture and their required number was Athenian Festival Overture. Junior Class Play Bottoms Up Bob Parker QNeil Miller, was interested in magic, but for some reason or other his tricks always seemed to backfire, especially on Mr. Abernaker, the high school principal fTodd Rozelle,-like the time he almost sawed Joan fSally Johnson, in two. This was especially bad since Joan was his girlfriend and Mr. Abernaker's daugh- ter. Matters weren't helped any when Louella, the maid, fSue Ann Bame, accidentally dyed Mr. Aberna- ker's coat yellow. Mrs Brnmswick, QArdith Dray, Mrs. James, QCarol Moyer, and Mrs. Hill, fRoberta Eulitt, came to see what kind of parents fDorothy Truesdale and Jim Rorabeck, Bob had, only to be welcomed to a hotseat rigged up by Bob's mischievious kid brother, Dickie fNoel Miller, and Gwen, Dickie's flame fCyn- thia Strayer,. To top everything off the law QTom Schmelzer, appeared and claimed Bob stole some valu- able animals from the zoo. With the aid of Eddie Aber- naker, fJack Vogt, his sister's fLinda Whittington, boy- friend, Bob breaks jail. Miss Bright QKaren Allen, from the zoo saved the day when she called on the Parker household and announced that the animals were not stolen but had just run away. For a surprise ending the animals turned out to be valuable chinchillas which breeded for the first time under Bob's care. DIRECTOR V- Mrs, Schmidt. Those are some of the calls the girls of the Library Society hear every day in study hall. The librarians maintain a card catalogue, furnish magazines tothe students, keep the books in good repair, and generally take care of all phases of library work. Our Welsh Memorial Library was estab- lished in 1928, and today, under the able leadership of our Librarian Miss Rogers, it has grown to be 11 fine collection of reference books, fiction, non fiction, magazines, and film strips. The National Honor Society Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service are the qualifica- tions for members of the National Honor Society. Membership in this select group is a coveted honor. The Society holds few meetings other than in preparation for an in- duction ceremony. This ceremony given before the student body is most dignified and impressive, Following the induction a tea honoring the parents, teachers, and guests is given by the senior honor students.
