On Edison's birthday they presented a program based on his life and his achievements in science. The Science Club has made admirable progress this year and should continue broadening and expanding in the years to follow. A. started the year of girls' activities with the annual initia- tion of new members. The initiation was held on September 29th, at which time twenty-three new members were taken in, making a total of sixty- eight. During the home football games, the G. A. A. girls sold hot dogs, candy, potato chips, and coffee and sponsored dances after most of the home foot- ball games. Again the basketball season saw the girls busy with their selling of food. Business seemed unusually good because the exciting games whetted everyone's appetite. This year, for the Hrst time, the G. A. A. girls played football. Football and softball came in the fall and then came the various other activities: volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, bowling and badminton. The volleyball champions were the Juniors, and despite the stiff competition they faced in basketball, the Seniors took the honor of being the champions. This year a change was made in the G. A. A. plans. It honored both the basketball and football boys with a very nice banquet. At the banquet, the Sophomore girls put on a very clever and fitting skit, giving their inter- pretation of a combination football and basketball game. -13- Top Bow: Carol Bohn, Catherine Gudakunst, Margaret Blimek, Rita Carinean, Barbara Tignvr, Millicent Pedersen, Beverly Shufeldt, Helen Brinkman, Sally llienstberger, Eunice Mitterniaicr, Jo Ann 'XVL-lcli, Marilyn 'Yo-ung, Connie Fritz. 'U-J The Y-Teens, under the capable direction of Miss Wanamaker, opened the 1949-50 school year with their traditional candlelight initiation of new members. After their initiation, the girls really settled down to business and on December 2, after a few months of careful planning, the Y-Teens presented their annual formal dance, The Cinderella Ball, in the auditor- ium, which was beautifully and appropriately decorated for the occasion. Don Underwood of Van Wert furnished the music for the evening. In March, a lecture was given on health. This lecture was both inter- esting and beneficial as it pointed out the value of good health and ways to maintain good health. In April, Miss Wanamaker's girls made a trip to the Van Wert YWCA in place of their monthly meeting and, needless to say, had a wonderful time. The last group activity of the year was the farewell party for the seniors and with this event, the Y-Teens closed the books on another event- ful and wonderful year. -20- Top Bow: Janet Coon, Margaret Hilvers, R-ita Freund, Edna Buetlner, Ann Myers. At every home football game the crowds thrilled to their brilliant performance. The band members wore small lights on their hats and shoes. These lights made all of the formations very colorful when the stadium lights were turned off. Besides their home performances the band traveled to Spencerville to put on their show for the Spencerville people. Also on November 4, the band performed between halves at the Ohio Northern-Findlay football game and did very well. A year. 5 JG dp, IX! The 4th day of September in the year 1946 found fifty-one adventure bound freshmen ascending the steps of J efferson High School. Before the first month of school was up many girls had joined the G. A. A. and Y-Teen or- ganizations and several freshman boys were members of the football squad. For our Freshman year we had the following class officers: President, Timmy Rousos, Vice President, Dick Eleyet, Secretary, Roger Brown, Treasurer, Beverly Mericle, Sergeant at Arms, Eddie Nash. Again in September, 1947, we climbed into our seats and felt very proud for we were now in the upper hall among all the older students. This year we took a more active part in athletics and various other activities. Our football and basketball players were getting bigger and better, which served as encouragement for them. As far as our school work was concerned, we were taking on tougher subjects which required more and more time and study. Our class officers for this year were: President, Joe Martin, Vice President, Bill Paul, Secretary, Mary Gudakunst. Although our freshman year went fast, I think our sophomore grade about doubled and it wasn't long until we were entering the school as juniors. How wonderful it was to be a junior! ! Seven members of our class were inducted into the National Honor So- city, and three boys joined the D Club. Our class, as a whole, gave their share of enthusasim to the Y-Teens, G. A. A., basket- ball. football, baseball. The class play, Tattletale , and the prom Gold for the 49ers were the two main events of the junior year. The junior class officers were: President, Larry Kurtz, Vice President, Bill Paul, Secretary, Grace Violet, Treasurer, Martina Mittermaier, Sergeant at Arms: Gene Best. Though we all enjoyed our Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years we were very anxious to be Seniors, and September 7th didn't roll around any too soon for most of us. This year we took the leading part in the activities and they became as important to us as our schoolwork. We chose these students to lead us: President, Grace Violet, Vice President, Joe Martin, Secretary, Earl Him- meger, Treasurer, Dick Eleyet, Sergeant at Arms, Eugene Claypool. This year we had 9 varsity lettermen, two more inducted into the Honor Society, and many more acting as leaders in the different organizations. As seniors nearly ready to graduate, we bemoan the fact that this will be our last year together. We have all enjoyed these last four years of working together in our schoolwork and having fun together in our activities and athletics. -36- Gene Best Roger Brown Marguerite Burgess Elbert Butler Lois Carter Eugene Claypool Jola Craig Joyce Crede ...371 ,,.k,1-ati f 'lus Jeanette Culp Byron Davey Richard Eleyet Robert Foust Waanataa Fox John Freund Jack Fulton Mary Gudakunst 1381 Earl Himmeger Elizabeth Jones Wanda Kerns Norma Kramer Joe Martin Wilbur Maizen Sue Maxson Robert Miller -- - ' . One of the first tasks we had was to elect officers and we chose the following boys as our leaders: President, Ramon Vasquez, Vice President, Lasazro Vasquez, Secretary, Nel- son Sandersg Treasurer, Bob Knapp, Serg- eant at Arms, Robert MacDonald. One of our boys, Ramon Vasquez, thrilled our class by getting a football letter in the freshman year. We had several boys getting baseball letters. Although the girls did their part in G. A. A. and other activities, they were not yet eligible for letters. We had a number of parties in our freshman year which afforded us a great deal of fun. Our three months' vacation came-and went, and it wasn't long before we were entering the school as sophomores. Our class officers this year were: President, Franklin Sheeterg Vice President, Norman Fairg Secre- tary, Arlene Schrammg Treasurer, Kenny Metzger. This election was something out of the ordinary for we had a girl represented. We now had six boys in the D Club and many more working toward their D's. We found our subjects getting much tougher and won- dered just how tough they could get. The junior year found us eager and willing to come to school. There was so much for us to look forward to: class play, parties, prom, and all the other activities. In the line of sports this year a number of both girls and boys earned their letters. This year again we had boy officers and chose as President, Neil Jettinghoffg Vice President, Bob Mac- Donaldg Secretary, Ed. Lindemang Treasurer, Jack Swickg Sergeant at Arms, Bill Wills. We enjoyed putting on our first play, en- titled Parents Are Like That. ln the spring our big task was to entertain the Seniors at the annual prom. We chose Gay Nineties for the theme. We are eagerly looking forward to another year of as much fun and excitement as this year has given us. 1441 Wil' Top Row: Eleanor Briggs, Edna Buettner, DeVV ese Norman l air Willifi e , 1 , .m Feathers, Robert Fought. We had two class parties and both were enjoyed immensely. We danced, played games and ate, and everyone had fun. The sophomore girls put on a skit, which consisted of a combination of Football and Basketball game, at the Athletic Banquet and made quite a hit. So, as you can see, the sophomore class had a very full and eventful year. -46- Top Row: Stanley Allen, Jeannette Allemeier, Paul Allemeier, Robert Baxter, Vvilliam Best, Margaret Bilimek, Ronald Boberg, Carol Bohn, Billie .lo Brittingham, Donald Buckles, Glenna Buzard, Gordon Carmcan, Dean Claypool. The squad prac- ticed hard and in pre-season scrimmage de- feated Delta by an encouraging score. Despite this victory, the fickle hand of fate gripped the Wildcats and although they were un- aware of it, they were doomed to seven straight defeats. Inexperienced and plagued by injuries, they kept trying. Finally they met Pandora at the stadium field. The Wild- cats scored on the first play of the game and Went on to score a 33--6 victory. In the final game the Wildcats defeated Lafayette 13-19 and were inches from another score as the game ended. Against Shawnee, the Wildcats scored as many points by themselves as the rest of the league together.
