1965 DELPHI JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL DELPHOS, OHIO MMHj| Many bridges are crossed as we proceed through our school years. In this book, we hope to show some of the bridges which prepare us for our future lives. Let us remember our high school days as Crossing the Bridge to Knowledge. MISS ADELAIDE BENNING DEDICATION We, the class of 1965, with a deep feeling of honor and respect are very proud to dedicate the 1965 Delphi to Miss Adelaide Benning. In all her years of teaching at Delphos High School, her instruction, encourage¬ ment, and guidance have led many a student to a suc¬ cessful life in the commercial world. We, as students, wish to thank her for her faithful assistance in all our endeavors. May this dedication serve as a lasting tri¬ bute to a very devoted lady. THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1965 “Today We Follow, Tomorrow We Lead” The graduating class of 1965 has not only quantity but quality and accomplishment. After twelve years of fun and toil, pleasure and hardship, our class stands on the thresh- hold of entering a new world, leaving the relative security of our high school days. We will enter this new environment not totally unprepared. In our years in high school we have gained invaluable experience which we can call on later in life. We took a big step along the road of ex¬ perience as we entered high school as “scrawny” freshmen. In this year we learn¬ ed what activities really are. The girls were inducted into the G. A. A. and Y-Teens. The G. A. A. initiation was something never to be forgotten, with the girls wearing dad’s boots and shirt and mom’s skirt upside down as well as her lipstick smeared all over. There were great opportunities for the boys to par¬ ticipate in sports of all kinds—football, bas¬ ketball, baseball, and intramural games. The boys showed their eagerness and ability by winning the Allen County Tournament in basketball. The boys also gained a chance to be so¬ cialites by escourting the girls to the Y- Teen Dance. Here, too, the word “work” en¬ tered our vocabulary as an everyday term. Latin and Algebra meant homework every night. As we entered the sophomore year the class had gained security and a heavier sched¬ ule. Biology reigned as the girls favorite sub¬ ject. The dissecting assignments would thrill the feminine section of the class to no end. Moreover; Mrs. Oetzel began the tremendous job of mellowing our voices. D-Club initia¬ tion came to several in the class during this year. The boys were a sorry sight, having in¬ describable attire and faces covered with lip¬ stick and cork. “Burning the midnight oil” was the favorite expression in our junior year. All the for¬ mulas in chemistry class added up to one thing—hard work. The Junior Class play was a great success inspite of the tragic events of November 22. The latter part of the year was spent in preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom. “It’s Almost Tomorrow” showed the imagination, ingenuity, and cooperation of our class. At last the year we had so long awaited arrived. The Class of ’65 was now the senior class and proud of it. The class set examples to all others concerning scholarship, leader¬ ship, sportsmanship, and service. The Senior Play, “The Green Bough” is considered among the best ever presented. It is now the Seniors turn to enjoy the prom as the hon¬ ored guests. Now it is time for the class of ’65 to leave the halls of dear D. H. S. As we fit ourselves into the caps and gowns, all our memorable experiences will pass before our eyes. We all will feel more than a little regret to be sep¬ arated from each other and from t he school. But the class of ’65 is determined to succeed in the outside world as it has at Jefferson High. 14 Randy J. Society Of Books “May I have the new National Geo¬ graphic?” This is one of the most familiar calls that plagues the student librarians. The librarians maintain a card catalogue, furnish magazines to students, and take care of the library. The Welch Memorial Library was establish¬ ed in 1928 and has been growing rapidly ever since. The Society of Books is an or¬ ganization of twenty-one girls under the su¬ pervision of Mrs. Wieging. The groups’ social event this year was a pizza-party, where the librarians received their library pins. Girl’s Athletic Association The members of the Girls’ Athletic As¬ sociation, under the direction of Mrs. Strayer, shared many enjoyable moments this past year. The first activity of the year was in¬ itiation, when the Freshmen girls were forced to endure black eyes, crazy clothes, and a great deal of embarrassment. Soon the ac¬ tive members were busy earning points to¬ ward their letter by participating in volley¬ ball, basketball, and baseball intramurals and by selling popcorn at basketball games. The main social event of the year was the annual G.A.A. Banquet, at which time all the athletes at Jefferson were honored. The Girls’ Athletic Association ended its’ activi¬ ties for the year with a picnic at Ft. Amanda. The members enjoyed many interesting meetings and projects. These projects included a sponsoring of a needy family, the sale of greeting cards, and the purchasing of a Public Address System for the school. In March, the annual Mother and Daughter Tea was held. Doug Harter showed slides from his tour of Europe and related his many exciting adventures. D-CLUB The varsity D-Club under the supervision of Mr. Koch is open to those boys who have earned a letter in either football, basketball, or baseball. The purpose of the club is to de¬ velop good sportsmanship among the boys and to create school spirit within the student body. The D-Club is a working organization which sells ads for programs, sells programs at all athletic activities, and manages the pop concession at the home basketball games. The D-Club also buys carnations for Mom’s Night, sponsors a trip to an Ohio State foot¬ ball game, and sponsors a few dances through the year. The last event is the “blowout” for all those boys who participated in ath¬ letics. The chapter had many successful actvi- ties during the past year. Among these were the Chicken Barbeque, Sausage and Pancake Supper, and the Parent and Son Banquet in which the boys honored their parents. This was quite an honor for our choir since no other C-l choir had ever , been asked to sing at one of these Workshops. After this, the choir successfully presented their annual Christmas program. Starting with the new year, the choir began to work hard for contest. Their hard work paid off as they received a superior rating at District Contest. The people in the play represented the young people of today. A young couple, Marianne Bradley and David White, became engaged, and soon afterward David was drafted into the army. While David was at the war front in Viet Nam, Marianne makes plans for their wedding. Then David’s par¬ ents receive a letter which said that he had been captured by the Viet Cong. The Juniors gave up many precious hours of their time to make the Prom the success that it was. 76 CARNIVAL DANCE Something new was added to the an¬ nual P.T.A. Carnival this year—a semi- formal Carnival Dance. Doug Weaver and Sue Winters reigned as King and Queen of the Carnival. The auditorium, decorat¬ ed with many large balloons, looked very festive for the occasion. Y-TEEN DANCE Evening in Paris On November 29, the Y-Teen Dance was held in which everyone had a wonderful “Evening in Paris.” The color scheme was blues and white, and it was elaborately decorated with typical scenes of Paris. HOMECOMING The night of October 17, 1964, will always be remembered by Queen Jeannette Martin and her attendants, Elaine Wisher and Bon¬ nie Fry. Elaine and Bonnie, driven to the football field in a Chevrolet convertible, were escorted to their seats by co-captains Dennis Ditto and Tom Hittle. Queen Jean¬ nette, arrived at the field in a Mercury con¬ vertible and was escorted by captain Jack DeWitt. Each member of the Homecoming Court was presented a beautiful spray of flowers. Immediately following the games, the coronation ceremonies were held prior to the semi-formal Homecoming Dance. Queen and Her Court—left to right—Bonnie Fry, Queen Jeannette Martin, Elaine Wisher.
