It Sure Was Worth the Trouble! Dusty rooms .. . smelly halls ... no bells ... no intercom ... no clocks . . . rooms with no doors . . . doors with no knobs ... no windows . .. knocked out walls . . . sack lunches but no lunchroom . . . at times no lights ... no pencil sharpeners .no carpet . . . unpainted walls . . . total ugliness . . . freezing rooms . . . crabby teachers . .. discomfort . . . unorganization . . . cute construction workers crowded halls . . tripping over tools . . . piles of junk scattered everywhere . . . Sound familiar??? This was the condition of Jefferson Senior High throughout most of the first half of the school year. But wasn't it worth the inconvenience? Construction workers started to wander about the halls and knock out walls in the fall of I97S. At first it was tough for students to get used to the idea of having these guys interrupting their consentration with sounds of hammers and drills. Taking up space and crowding the hallways was another condition of construction that was hard for students. But the faculty and student body looked at the conditions .as very necessary, so they all cooperated. It was also fun for everyone to watch the school get torn apart and rebuilt again. Jefferson High School was supposed to be completed by January I. 1980, at a cost of $1,600,000. However, as problems occured such as back orders, lack of availability of materials, and just getting into each others way, the new date for completion was set for March, 1980. There was also an increase in costs bringing the total to nearly $3,000,000 for Jefferson School alone. (Central Junior High tvas involved in a similiar remodeling-addition project at the same time at about $1,500,000.
