For it's days like theirs of freedom For which we seem to long. However, when we graduate, I imagine we too will tell Of all our glorious high school days. That we enjoyed so well. Japan. While in Alexandria she stayed with the John Basten family and the Bill Berger family. Kazumi spent a lot of the summer traveling. She went to Washington. D.C.. Virginia. Maryland. Mon- tana. and Florida, where she gained a better understanding of the United States. While at Jefferson, she took English math. art. US history. French and choir. She plans to further her education upon her return to Japan. Kama Johnson was the 1978 American Field Service student representing our school in Innsbruck and Frauenhofen. Austria. While at Innsbruck she stayed with a family including three daughters who have a cabin in the beautiful Alps Mountains. Kama enjoyed sampling different foods and especially liked the dumplings. She felt that she gained a better under- standing of herself through her stay in Austria. Helen Carmody is one of this year's Ameri- can Field Service exchange students. She is from Adelaide, the capitol of South Aus- tralia. During her year in Alexandria she stayed with the Robert Benesh family. She says the schools in Australia place more emphasis on academics than U S. schools. After getting used to our winter climate. Helen learned to ski and snowmo- bile. When she returns to Australia. Helen is entering a university for a possible nurs- ing career. Magnus Nilsson is this year's American Field Service exchange student He comes from the northern part of Sweden, about 60 miles from the Artie Circle. During the year he stayed with the Jack Trumm family. Magnus was involved in football, wrestling and the Spring Play. He enjoys skiing and is an accomplished guitarist. 60 HOMECOMING 1978 62 1978 Homecoming Royalty: King Tim Voller. Queen Michelle Sax- ton; Senior Escorts Chris Anderson and Jerry Bous, Senior Atten- dants Debbie Bosek and Shelley Fearing. The Junior Escort was Mark Ryskamp. Junior Attendant was Pam Zastrow. The Sopho- more Attendant and Escort were Donna Lurke and David Hovda. 64 Homecoming 1978 began on Monday, October 9, with coronation followed by the traditional Homecoming parade. The parade started at the Knute Nelson Memorial field and proceded south on Broadway to Tenth Avenue. An unfortunate incident of this year's parade was the egg throwing fiasco. Jefferson students, including some members of the Cross Country and Football teams got carried away with the energy and the excitement of Homecoming. On Tuesday students were required to get out of class to clean up broken eggs and paper. The clean-up crew included student council members, Homecoming Committee, the Cross Country and Football teams. On Friday night the Cards battled the Brainard Warriors. They played courageously but were defeated. The Alumni Tea was held after the game in the Cafeteria. A Disco dance for returning Jefferson grads climaxed the evening. Saturday night the Homecoming dance was held in the school gymnasium with music provided by the band, Persia. Because of excess litter from the parade, remaining Homecoming festivities were nearly cancelled. But everyone pitched in, cleaned up downtown and streets along the parade route and Homecoming 1978 was a memorable success. MATCHMAKER The 1978 spring play was Matchmaker by Thornton Wilder, the non-musical version of Hello Dolly . The story revolved around Mrs. Levi trying to make the right match for everyone. In the end everyone ends up happily matched but not quite the way she planned! 66 Horaee Vandergelder Malache Stack Connelius Hackl Barnaby Tucker Amboise Kemper Helga Collette Cabman Mrs. Dolly Levi Miss Flora Van Huysen Mrs. Irene Molloy Minnie Fay Ermengarde Gertrude Miss Van Huysen's cook Director Bob Saar Dale Heldt Bob Urness Richard Hertel Dean Johnson Janet Krueger Terry Farley Andy Bergstrom Trish Mateer Tammy Greenwood Mary Bursch Lori Opsal Anne Larson Jenny Tillit Lori Spiegel Mr. Markert 67 FALL PLAY The 1978 fall play. THE DEATH AND LIFE OF SNEAKY FITCH, was a comedy written by James Rosenberg. The play is a parody of western sterotypes. The townspeople of Gopher Gulch were very concerned with keeping the Code of the West . The town doctor gives Sneaky some medicine that puts him to sleep for a short time. The townspeople find Sneaky and assume that he has perished, but Sneaky wakes up in his coffin and returns to terrorize the town. Eventually, it is the townspeople who go against the code”, shooting Sneaky in the back. The play was enjoyed by many. Thursday was Weird Day and students could be seen with uncoordinated outfits, frizzed hair, jeans inside out and other strange apparel. On Friday, John Ivan Palmer, a memory expert, amazed the audience with his photographic memory. He recalled exactly what was on pages of a magazine. He also made a few students say what he wanted them to say. His presentation was truly captivating. On Saturday an informal dance was held featuring music by the Thayer Brothers. Other activities held during the week were. Dress-Up Day, Student Teacher Day, Long Underwear Day, and the Annual Variety Show.
