£DRTI? IJI OF THE WEEK By Mag I In an identity-crisis world, Donald Benschoter is retiring from a position which has been built through 41 years of caring for students. As a counselor and guidance director, his interests nave led him into work of special education, a group of students han- dicapped in their abilities. “Do I matter in the world” is a question he has helped those students answer as he has assisted, parent and student in realizing the importance of self-concept. He is retiring from the Alexandria school system as Director of Runestone Special Education Interdistrict Cooperative, but his educational services over the years have included that of teacher, coach, counselor, principal and psychologist. The feeling for the special education student has grown unconsciously for him and there is a sensitivity towards their importance. Wno am I” is as important an identity to them as it is to those endowed with much greater capabilities. WW S s y c E P d fa Pi re m wi an Dc wh Mr. Donald Benschoter Courtesy of Vernon Studios; Don came to Alexandria in 1958 as Director of Pupil Personnel Services. At that time there was a single class of special, education students. Today classes are conducted for elementary and secondary trainable and educable mentally retarded, students. „ . . Begun in the Fall of 1973, Special Education Interdistrict Cooperative covers not onlyJh xandria area but Brandon, Evansville, Glenwood, Os HHtUard. as well. Teachers have available to themjp trvices of four speech therapists and a psveh..). 'T,-flfP rnordlfiakd b What to do if your child can't learn By Dr. James Culey Dr. James Culey, director of the Runestone Special Education Interdistrict Cooperative which has its headquarters in Central School, has submitted a series of articles discussing learning disabilities. This series of informative articles will be run io consecutive issues of the ECHO AND PRESS. This is the first of nine articles. The child seems every bit as bright as Johnny next door. IQ tests show that his intelligence is average or even superior. His eyesight seems keen, he has no apparent problem hearing, there is not a sign of illness, injury, or physical defect. In fact, most of the time he can’t be distinguished from any other happy, skylarking youngster. Yet put him in a classroom and a painful difference im- mediately becomes apparent. Try as he might, he cannot seem to master those strange symbols on the printed page. Or he cannot seem to write, —“figure,” or even sit still while the teacher is talking. He has a learning problem. No one knows how many American parents have faced (he heartache of a child who is — in the phrase of the U.S. Office of Education — “Lear- ning disabled.” Estimates range between five and 30 percent of the school population — as many as eight million preadolescents. It is known that nine out of ten are boys, that they come from all kinds of homes and family backgrounds, that most of their deficiencies become apparent in the primary grades, and that some of these children remain hidden until too late because of a system of “social promotion” that pushes them along — although they have not learned anything. It is also known that the consequences of learning proglems can go far beyond the classroom. Children who can’t learn may grow into delinquent adolescents or develop emotional problems: some never recover from the devastation to their self-esteem. The good news, however, is that the overwhelming majority of the learning-disabled can be helped — if their problems are recognized early enough and if the children receive special attention for them. Over the past five to seven years, vast interest has developed in identifying and remedying childhood learning problems; the Federal Government has established a Brueau of Education for the Handicapped and has set up 43 model learning Disability Child Service Demonstration Centers around the country. In almost every state, programs have been set up to help learning disabled children reach their full education potential. Dr. James Culey Much ot this success is the work of parents, l,ed by nationwide parents' group, th« Association for Children Witt learning Disabilities (ACLD) mothers and fathers of the learning-disabled have fough to get assistance for thiei children. But despite their efforts, th key role in discovering children's problems anc assisting with them still falls k rents. It is parents who mus aware of their children’: needs and insist on help fo them. What should parents knov about children’s learning problems? And if a paren suspects his child is in trouble what should he do about it? P series of eight informative articles will follow to describe ■ learning disabilities” an answers to the questions posee above i THIRD ANNUAL ' , t 4 STAFF APPRECIATION BREAKFAST I By Magtl Dreams of youth often fall uy me wayside because of lack of per- severance or lack of faith, but the dream of two brothers will soon become reality just because of persistence in both of the above fac- tors Two brothers, George and Paul Anderson, who in 1946 purchased a 50-acre run-down farm, will this year see the completion of the ARROWWOOD LODGE complex, the culmination of almost a quarter of a century of dreams. The season ended with a 2-7 record, however, considering that we lost four of our games at the hands of some of the top ranked teams in the state, their final record is nothing to be ashamed of. Matt Steidl received the most valuable player award from the team. Steve Olsen was the out- standing defensive player, while Rob Thompson and Bob Holverson were selected the outstanding offensive players for the year. 8 HOMECOMING Homecoming festivities at JHS emerged as one of the most exciting and colorful celebrations ever. The climactic corona- tion of the queen came on Thursday night with Julie Woodward being crowned Queen of Homecoming 1972. Her attendants were Nancy Larson and Terri McCabe. The junior attendant was Glen Pischke and the sophomore attendant was Julie Wads- worth. Although the weather caused the can- celation of the bonfire and the post- ponement of the parade, spirits remained high. Student creativity was in evidence throughout the entire celebration. The football team put on a show of su- perior strength as they conquered the Morris Tigers. 9 10 0 ■ CROSS COUNTRY r-«| •VI, IVI The 1972 Cardinal Cross-Country Team had a very successful year as they finished 3rd in District 22 and 3rd in Region 6. Over- all, the team defeated 57 teams and lost to just 14. Even with the loss of seniors Bruce Forster. Wally Drexler, Leland King, Rick Roggou, Joel Paulzine, Lonnie Berger, and Chris Bougamont, the future for 73 looks bright with captain Al Olson, Rick Olson. Mark Pederson, and Mike Sward. 12 ELECTION 72 13 A group of Jefferson High students combined their talents in presenting the one act play entitled 'Please, No Flowers.” Their efforts were duly re- warded when they received the award of 1st place alternate in the district contest. Special recogni- tion was given to Georgia Blackmun, Best Actress; Candy Thoen, Nominated for Best Actress; Kevin Graneir, Nominated for Best Supporting Actor; Patty Voss, Nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Through the AFS program came Chris Bougamont from France who stayed with the Les Shogren family. One of Chris' many hobbies is drawing in which he is especially talented. Being fond of the Beatles, he was quite often overheard humming their songs. Catherina Catta Wohleche was the 1972-73 Rotary International student in Alexandria. Catta comes from Eslov. Sweden, a city slightly larger than Alex. One of her new experiences was learning the game of football. By the end of the season she thought it was interesting even though she still pre- fers soccer. Our own Patti Klein was selected to represent Jef- ferson High as an AFS student. Patti spent most of last summer in Ceylon, an island near India. She was eager to share her unique experiences with us. 21 Catta Wohleche. Sweden 22 t Alexandria's excellent wrestling squad soared to their seasonal goal of winning the District 22 championship this year after a regular season record of 7-5. Led by the co-captains Curt Ma- teer and Dave Walsh, the team showed its will, desire, and strength to win. Alex had two district champions in Dave Ledman and Mark Lundgren. Also doing a super job this year was the B-squad. Enough can't be said for our fine coaches who took pride in coaching our boys to a record they can be proud of. CONCERTS Not only is basketball a game of skill, it is also an area in which Alexandria athletics excelled. This year's group of cagers really put forth their effort to win. Thanks Cards for dealing them right. 30 Midwinter '73 was celebrated with enor- mous enthusiasm this year. The festivities began on a Monday with the coronation of Pat Fitzgerald and Wayne Gylsen as Prin- cess and Prince, respectively. Serving as the royal court were Mary Jo Fladwood, Bob Holverson, Kim Haaven, Scott Thompson. Nancy Larson, and Rick Rosengren. Slave days brought its usual share of the laughter with Mike Sherman and Jeff Callaghan as the insane auctioneers. The AFS assembly has become a tradition in our school, with for- eign students from around the area speaking to the students of Jefferson. The Midwinter dance was a hot success with a group called 'Skoogie the Flaming Pachucos providing the entertainment. Wrapping up Midwinter '73 was a breakfast for all the visiting foreign students. And so another successful Midwinter came to a frosty cold close. HOCKE Webster defines hockey as, “a game played on ice in which two teams seek to drive a puck into the opponents goal. ' That is exactly what this year's group of puck- sters is made of: drive. Each player added his help to bring distinction to the Alex- andria name with another fine record. 33 MINI COURSES 34 36 ESSAY III 41 GOLF TENNIS 42 SPRING PLAY The drama season came to its climax last year with the successful production of the spring play “Arsenic and Old Lace. Rolfsrud is being recognized for his achievements as an author. He is in prestigious company as the other in- ductees include two former North Dakota Governors, Allen Olson and William Guy; and Minnesota billionaire entrepreneur Curt Carlson. Previous Hail of Fame inductees from Minnesota are Walter Mondale and O.E. Rolvaag, the novelist. The annual three-day celebration brings approximately 30,000 people of Norwegian descent from Canada and all parts of the United States to Minot. Norway is represented by several dignitaries and a handcrafts exhibit from Telemark. Private homes as well as commer- cial hostelries In Minot and other towns in the area are booked three years in advance. Over a hundred ar- tists and craftpersons from 20 states demonstrate and sell their Scandina- vian wares. Entertainment is offered on stages in three halls on the state fair grounds. In addition to Scandinavian musicians and entertainers, there are concerts this year by Barbara Man- drell, Loretta Lynn, Crystal Gayle, Andy Williams, the Statler Brothers and others. Gretchen Carlson (Miss America 1989) and Myron Floren will provide music at the Hall of Fame banquet. Rolfsrud, who was a columnist with the Lake Region Echo Press for several years, continues to write books from his rural home near the southwest comer of Douglas County. The three teachers -- Sylvia Christopherson, Eric Endberg, and Anne Riggs - were honored Tuesday afternoon (November 19) at the Holi- day Inn. Each of them was chosen by a vote of all teachers in the school district as the best.” In the following stories, the three teachers discuss how they feel about their jobs -- both joys and frustrations - and their thoughts on educating to- day’s students in District 206. by Dennis Dalman Sometimes, Sylvia Christopherson said with a smile, “I feel as though I am being buried under a mountain of paper ” Forms, forms, and more forms. A blizzard of paper drifts her way, day in and day out. Much of it comes from the state and federal government. Ever since 1975, when legislation mandated that every child receive an individualized, ap- propriate education, the flood of forms has been flooding into schools. The rules change all the time. But Christopherson, still smiling, waxed philosophical about the paper storm As the coordinator for the Learning Disability program in District 206, she knows that the forms have a meaning and a purpose: to guarantee that every student with a learning disability receives the maximum ser- vices that the school district can provide. Christopherson makes sure of that. “The endless paperwork,” she said, “is a way to make sure that the students, the parents, the teachers Continued from Page 1 Sylvia Christopherson and administrators share vital infor- mation on each child so that a coor- dinated team effort can help that child learn to the best of his or her ability.” Christopherson coordinates learn- ing services for 200 students with varying degrees of specific learning disabilities (SLD) -- a specific problem or problems usually limited to one or two areas such as inability to retrieve information or a hearing impairment. She also coordinates services for 100 students with general learning disabilities (GLD), which caused by over-all, non-specific problems such as an inferior self-regard. “My role is basically that of a diagnostician,” she said. “Each year I evaluate about 200 referrals.” After evaluations, Christopherson draws up elaborate Individualized Education Plans (lEP’s) fortNery stu- dent admitted to the pronram.
