This is a book of memories. It is about the things you did in 1963; it's about your teachers, your school; but, most important, it's about you. As we, the Alexian staff, created this book, we tried to portray in it the mood of you, the student, during this school year. 2 Table of Contents Faculty................. 9 Classes.................15 Organizations...........47 Music...................63 Sports..................71 Activities..............S3 DEDICATION We, the class of 1963, take deep pride in dedicating this annual to our principal, Mr. C. B. Rykken. Mr. Rykken has served as Senior High Principal since 1945. During this time he has worked diligently to improve our school. His many students have come to love and respect him; his outstanding leadership has been a beacon for them to follow. They have felt it an honor to be associated with him. Mr. Rykken has been active in several state and local organizations. He has been for six years a member of the State Advisory Committee of North Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and is a past president of the Central Minnesota Principals' Association. He has been active in the local Scouting program, is a past president of the Alexandria Kiwanis Club and secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, and has acted as county chairman of the Easter Seal Society for several years. It is our hope that this dedication will in some small way express our thanks and appreciation to Mr. Rykken for all he has done for his students, his school, and his town. 4 An English test, a term paper, a football game, the dance after it, all these mean Jefferson Senior High School. We, the students, are JHS; we make it what it is. If it is a good school, it is because of the student body, the faculty, and the administration. Our high school years are the ones we shall never forget. We did so much, learned so much, enjoyed so much. These are the years of new experiences, new hopes, new dreams. We took a renewed and prideful interest in scholar- ship, looking ahead with contemplation and eager an- ticipation to college and future jobs and vocations, realizing their importance to us. Because of this we studied as we had never studied before. Our teachers became symbols of learning to us, respected and revered. New ideas were presented us; we found them stimulating and refreshing. The small world of our childhood grew and we became better individuals. We cheered our athletic teams--sometimes in victory, sometimes in defeat; but we cheered always with pride. They were an honorable symbol of our school. We expressed ourselves by joining the clubs of our special interests, and in doing so we contributed to JHS making it a better school. It was a good feeling to give to something from which we had gained so much. Like every class every year we had our special likes and fads. Girls wore stretch pants and flip hairdos; boys wore Cut-ups and Continental pants. We tried the Twist and the Limbo and make Telstar and Sherry our favorite songs. All these things we did with friends—friends made here at Jefferson. We spent wonderful hours with them studying, talking, laughing. They were our confidants and sympathizers. Friends played a very special and im- portant part in our high school life. We leave JHS behind us now; but wherever we go--to a job, a vocati be able to forget this school or these three years. This was Jefferson . . . this was our school. - School Board STANDING: Mr. Hafdal, Dr. Blanchard, Dr. Heegaard, Mr. Boyd. SEATED: Mrs. Unumb, Dr. Van de Steee Mr. Krueger. Here at Jefferson there exists a fine relationship among the students and mem- bers of the faculty and administration . We look to the administration to co- ordinate all our activities, both class- room and extracurricular . As well as teaching, faculty members excel in counseling, understanding, and encour- agement . We admire members of the faculty and administration who willingly accept the responsibilities of their posi- tion and who go even further in acting as advisors for school organizations . They are progressive contributors to a better community. These years at Jefferson have helped to prepare us for challenges which the future holds. As we go on to live the future, we will remember with apprecia- tion these efforts in our behalf. Mr. Hafdal Superintendent Mr. Rykken Principal Mr. Benschotek Pupil personnel 10 MR. It will be with mixed emotions that we, the class of 1963, march down the aisle and make our first major imprint on the future . As sophomores, Mary Lou Anderson graced festivities as our Homecoming attendent. Our junior year found us hard at work on a winning float with Bonnie Coleman as representative at Homecoming. Our Prom, with theme, South Pacific was pro- duced with cleverness and per- sistance. As seniors, we elected Janice Perry to be our Home- coming queen. All three years found us active in class plays, organizations, and school fes- tivities . We want especially to remem- ber our senior year. All things ... a dance, a class, a game, a teacher . . . hold spe- cial meaning for us. And now as we turn and leave, we will take with us the memories of many good experiences and friends which we found in our life at Jefferson as the class of 1963. We were very proud of our first place float and of Kathy Sherry, who represented us in the Homecoming royalty. As we took advantage of the opportunities available to us at Jefferson, both academic and extra-curricular, we began to look to the future years with eager anticipation. Our sophomore year has been full and exciting, and we look forward to the next two years, hoping they hold as much for us. S0PH0M0RE8 ROW Is J. Affeldt, C. Bakke, M. J. Arendt, S. Bartholomew, E. Boy and Girl Staters: Each year students are chosen from the junior class to become Boy and Girl Staters. The American Legion and Auxiliary sponsor this week-long activity. The students take an active part in a mythical setup of the state government. Goals are to inform students about government from the inside out and to impress future citizens with their civic responsibilities . This active group sponsors Homecoming, Teacher-Appreciation Day, a talent show and many other annual events. At the Minnesota Association of Student Councils Conventions Alex- andria was elected to lead the state- wide Student Council organization for 1963-64. From our Council, Paul Donley was elected to fill this position. Safety Council: A branch of Student Council is the Safety Council. A pleasing person- ality is essential to a successful and satisfy- ing life. We, the stu- dents of Jefferson, en- joy participating in extra-curricular activ- ities. School organiza- tions and clubs are educational as well as entertaining. Students acquire valuable exper- ience and useful knowl- edge. Through these activities, we seek to round out our high school life. With our exposure to new situa- tions comes a deeper, understanding of people and life around us. In learning to har- monize and develop new ideas, we hope to be able to contribute more to a better society. 62 Mr. Freng The Alexandria High School Choir will be able to look back on a very rewarding year. Time was spent by mem- bers in selling magazine subscriptions, candy and baked goods, all in an effort to raise money for a trip in the spring. The choir also presented a memorable Christmas Concert, the theme of which was The Love of God Was Made Manifest Among Us. The performance of the Elementary Choir, Ninth Grade Choir, and the Choral Club was an addition to this annual event. This was followed by the Kiwanis Benefit Concert in February. 64 Mr. Christiansen Because the Music Department was celebrating the tenth annual Clinic Concert in the spring, the choir in- vited Mr. Paul Christiansen back to be guest clinician again. Yet, more was still to come. Graduation came and the senior members participated for the last time at Baccalaureate. The choir members feel they owe much to Mr. Freng for his patience and persistence, which have helped to make the year one to be long remembered. 65 Section Leaders Jill Hultman Marilyn Bennett Sandy Allison Mary Boyd Emogene Hesse Jim Baumann Carol Anderson Clark Morse Barb Nodland Bob Abbott Lee Boyd Roger Kostman Band Officers Mary Boyd Bob Abbott Roger Kostman Karen Hansen Mixed Ensemble Section Leaders Mary Boyd John Loseth Bob Huhn Margaret Lamb n Mr. Christenson The Alexandria High School Band showed its true stamina this year by braving the elements to provide precision marching for the football games. This spirit continued into the basketball season where the band never failed to provide the music to stir the team on. The Band performed in three major concerts as the year passed. The first of these was the Pop Concert in November, proof again that people enjoyed its informality. The band played selections typifying the four seasons. 68 Mr. DiNino The Annual Kiwanis Benefit Concert in February was the band's next public concert. The band this year invited Mr. Vince DiNino, a former director of bands in Alexandria and now with the University of Texas, to be the clinician for the tenth annual Clinic Concert. It wasn't long afterward that graduation crept up and now the younger band mem- bers found themselves in the lead at the graduation exercises. Under the direction of Mr. Christenson, the band has completed a highly successful year. 69 MMdkep ROW 1: C. Melville, B. Oppel, C. Nelson, B. Winter, L. Olson, J. Seim, T. Connor, R. Benson, J. CARDS GO Alexandria wound up their 1962 grid season with a fine overall mark of 4-3-2. The record must be considered good in light of the fact that Alex had but two returning starters back from the 1961 squad. The Cards dropped their first two en- counters of the year to Benson and Moor- head before gaining a tie with Will mar in the third encounter of the year. The following week they tipped a strong Fargo Shanley contingent, 7-6. Breckenridge dumped the Cardinals the following week 19-7. Then Alex rolled to three straight victories over Glenwood, Fergus Falls, and Detroit Lakes. The Cards and the Wheaton Warriors battled to a scoreless tie in 4-3-2 the season finale. The Redbirds finished in a tie with Wheaton for third place in the Resort Region Conference with a 2-2-1 mark. Moorhead won the RRC title. Three Cardinals were placed on the Resort Region Conference team. They were Rog Schultz, John Conrad, Al Erickson. Erickson was also selected Most Valuable Player by his teammates and was named on WCCO's All-State Football Team of the Year. Co-captains for the 1962 season were Erickson and Rick Loveland. Assisting head coach Charlie Basch were Clair Morrison, John Gustafson and Dick Greengo. 72 Fisher, R. Bey, M. Vonderhaar, C. Morrison, ass't coach. Umess, P. Donley, B. Bauer, K. Johnson, J. Attend- ants were Candy Rubink, Joel Way, Kathy Heid, and Allen Erickson. This three day event consisted of a wrestling match, after which was held Parents' Night, a hockey match, and a basketball game , after which the mothers were honored.
