Features 81 J Dedication ' y We, the Seniors of 1959, dedicate our Alexian to Mr. Murrae N. Freng, who has distinguished himself while serving the students of the Alexandria High School for the past seven years as director of choral music. Mr. Freng, who was appointed head of the Music De- partment in 1955, has directed a number of outstand- ing choir concerts annually, all of which were praised by the overflowing crowds in attendance. This dedication is given sincerely by the graduating class which has profited greatly from the inspiration provided by Mr. Freng - - a man respected and ad- mired by his fellow faculty members and the student , body. y emor6 jL m r t Y J f) i « I A'Y j ■ 0 -'‘ )F K j Y C (T , if'41 v ™ IV U LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Ording, class ad- visor, Mary Clifford, Secretary-Treas- urer, Larry Hillesland, Vice President and Jim Steffen, President. Seniors First to Graduate from New School As we march down the aisle, we, the class of 1959, feel a special significance in being the first graduates of Jefferson High School. This school has held more meaning to us than any other class can feel. Back in the days when we were freshmen, we got our first taste of high school. We felt very proud to be head of the junior high and to have our own paper, the Cardette. This was the year the voters of our district decided that we should have a new senior high school. As the school went into the planning phase, we went into the sophomore class and senior high. This was the year we enjoyed many social activities, highlighted by the Sadie Hawkins Dance, which we sponsored. The new school went into construction and this class, then juniors, started our year with a terrific sellout for our class play, Meet Me in St. Louis. We also sponsored a beautiful prom with the theme Stairway to the Stars. Then came the big day. We as seniors walked through the doors of our new school. The fact that our job was not yet done was symbolized by the little inconveniences we underwent as the school neared completion. Miss Gail Rubink reigned as queen over our successful homecoming. In spring we became the guests at the prom and also enjoyed Senior Skip Day and the Senior Banquet. To conclude our high school days, we went through Honor Day, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. We now must take leave of the school. As it stands ready for the future, so may we. The entire high school vocal music department participates in this concert and the art department also lends its support to the success of the pro- gram. The Kiwanii Concert, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, is presented in February of each year. The proceeds are used to augment the Kiwanis'Under- privileged Children Fund. One of the outstanding music events in Minnesota is the Spring Clinic Concert. The unusual feature of this event is the appearance of nationally known music conductors. These men rehearse the band and choir for two days and climax the occasion with a formal concert. The choir was chosen this year to represent me state of Minnesota at the National Music Educators Convention in Chicago in May. A rather extensive tour of the mid-west states will be taken in connection with this appearance. Concerts will be presented at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin High School, Chicago, and Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. This year's mark was identical to the one posted by Alexandria a year ago. Included in Alex's string of victories were four straight in Resort Region conference competition. Only blemish in loop play was a 14-14 deadlock with Moorhead which also copped four league wins to finish in a tie with the Cardinals for the conference championship. Only loss handed Alexandria this past year was a 14-6 affair by the power-laden Willmar aggregation. This was the same team to end Alex's bid for an unbeaten season a year ago. In other non-loop action the Cardinals whipped Glenwood 19-6 in the homecoming contest after tripping Benson 26-0 in the sea- son opener. The Cardinals also dumped Wadena 33-6 in non-loop action. Alexandria, in walking off with at least a share of its second straight conference crown, thumped Brecken- ridge 18-0, edged Fergus Falls 7-6, trounced Detroit Lakes 4-0 and trimmed Wheaton 32-13 in the sea- son finale. Co-captains of the'58 Cardinals were Charley McDonald, a halfback, and Dave Helgeson, a tackle. As- sisting head coach Charley Basch were Clair Morrison, John Gustafson and A1 Sheriff.
