In the midst of a few mumbles of “I got my fourth choice!” and some grumbling “I thought seniors got pri- ority, and there is a junior-in the class I didn’t get,” the English Department launched its new Elective Program this year. Actually, the grumbles were few; the pre- vailing mood was one of enthusiasm as juniors and” seniors had their first opportunity to choose their courses for each nine-week period. Under the new program, students choose a new course from among those offered at the periods during which they take English. The offerings range from EN GLI S H courses organized around a theme or idea like ‘“‘Revolu- tion” or “The Supernatural” to those organized around a form of literature like the short story or the novel. Thespians and Spotlighters dents to choose their own courses of literature did not originate at Jefferson; several high schools in the county have had similar programs for several years. The plan has been received enthusiastically wherever it has been adopted. Both students and teachers have thrived in classes which the students have elected because of their interest. Of course, some of the “same old things” must happen in these English classes so that students can ac- quire and sharpen skills in language; however, many different things can happen when writing and learning is @e tied in with topics and types of literature in which § 4 students themselves have shown interest. Classes were offered in French, German, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Students and teachers alike were delighted with the revised Level One mater- ials. Frequent oral and listening practice both in the classroom and the lab made speaking a foreign langu- age a challenging and vital experience. Learning foreign THOMAS DeLaFLEUR songs and dances and preparing for the annual Mardi Gras Carnival helped to brighten the post-Christmas slump.
