SANE B.S., North Carolina State University M.A., Appalachian State University SCIENCE A new teaching approach, group study, is being employed in biology which should make the scientific venture a bit more appealing. Group study is designed to utilize the objectives of inde¬ pendent study while providing the opportunity for students to be involved in group activities and discussions. This ap¬ proach gives the student a large role in determining classroom activities and allows him to proceed at his own pace with the teacher serving as a resource person and guide rather than adhering to the traditional methods of teaching. The class is divided into three groups and each group is assigned a different starting point in the text. Each group determines its own schedule and works as a unit in covering the subject matter. The group schedules should include time blocks for reading and discussing textual material, performing labs, usage of resource materials, and the pursuit of individual interest in the area of biology. This approach not only provides the student with more academic freedom, but it will also enable him to form de¬ sirable study habits that will aid him in the adjustment to college life. Time, Space, and Matter is being offered this year for the first time. This course was developed as a secondary school science project at Princeton University with the sup¬ port of the National Science Foundation. Its primary ob¬ jective is to help the student define his physi cal world. With mankind standing on the threshold of space, this course will enable the student to better understand the scientific advancements of the next few years. 27
