On Thursday, October 12th, the first meeting of the Thomas Jefferson High PTA for the 67-68 school year was called to order by John Hanes, President. This, being BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT, once again drew a capacity crowd with standing room only. Mr. Hanes welcomed all the parents and announced plans for the coming year, portraying the theme, “A Look at Thomas Jefferson High School.” Programs for meetings will feature participation of several depart¬ ments within the school, such as the Music Depart¬ ment, the Guidance Department, and others. Programs will also include guest speakers on subjects of interest to everyone. A DOOR PRIZE of 50 gallons of gas to the lucky parent and ten dollars in cash to the child of the parent will be awarded at each PTA meeting. This prize is being donated by Mr. Stroube of Lincolnia Mobil Service Station. The Band and Athletic Boosters, which are part of the PTA organization, plan an active, hard-hitting cam¬ paign to raise funds for the school. In summary — it is the PTA Board’s objective to strive for an increased membership, make their meetings entertaining and of special interest, and assist Mr. Jordan and the faculty whenever they can. (contributed by Barbara Hanes) 18 WILLIAM JORDAN B.A., Bridgewater M.Ed., Univ. of Virginia Principal To the Graduating Class of 1968 As you leave Jefferson, your teachers and I wish you the very best of luck in all of your endeavors. Yours is the third class to graduate from Jefferson, but the first to have spent four years here. You entered as Freshmen the year we first opened our doors — in the fall of 1964 — and now, although it hardly seems possible that four years could pass so quickly, you are graduating. It has been a real pleasure for me to know you and to work with you. I feel that yours has been an out¬ standing class and that you have offered many contri¬ butions to the school. I hope that your high school education will enable you now to be successful as you enter college, the field of work, the military service, or whatever the future holds for you. Your teachers and I will always be ready to help you in any way that we can, so please keep in touch with us and come to see us whenever you can. 19 ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS Mr. Bernard works behind the scenes to make our years at Jefferson as good and as interesting as possible. As Assistant Principal for Instruc¬ tion, he does not often deal personally with the students, but the results of his efforts can be seen everyday. He arranges for substitute teach¬ ers, approves field trips, and is the one re¬ sponsible for making sure we have textbooks and equipment. Mr. Bernard is the one to turn to when a key is needed to unlock? a display case or a room. An important part of his work that most of us take for granted is the planning of curriculum and the supervision of instruction. Mr. Bernard does an excellent job supplying the school with the organization needed to keep it running smoothly. FRANK BERNARD B.S., State Univ. of New York M.A., New York University Mr. Visnich is the man who comes most closely in touch with the students. As Assistant Principal for Administration, he begins each morning by checking the buses as they arrive. Throughout the day he calls students to the office, deals with attendance records, checks cars for park¬ ing stickers, disciplines those unwilling to obey the rules, greets people in the cafeteria, makes the seldom heard after¬ noon announcements, and waves good¬ bye to the buses while he holds his mysterious radio. Although one of his many jobs requires him to handle those who cause problems, Mr. Visnich is still well-liked and respected by the student body. Department Chairman GUIDANCE The main principle and philosophy of the Guid¬ ance Department is that no two individuals are exact¬ ly alike. Each has his own pattern of growth, which determines to a large extent the direction and rate of his progressive development. This pattern of development can flourish best in an appropriate en¬ vironment, which a good teacher and counselor will provide. The Guidance Department’s role is to enable each student to best prepare himself for the years ahead. They do this by aiding the student in every way they can, and by supplementing the academic program provided by the teaching staff. However, counseling is not limited to the guidance offices, for many of the teachers also serve as counselors to their stu¬ dents. Guidance serves only as a map to assist the stu¬ dent in finding his direction. We do not give an education, we merely give the means for one. MRS. CYNTHIA B. LIBRARY With the opening of school this September, the library had much to boast about. The additional room, which was completed during the summer, increased the library’s space by half and afforded more seat¬ ing space and shelves. This provides for the growing inventory of books and the enlarging circulation. The library staff is proud of the frequent class use of the library and its availability at all times to each department with a well-rounded collection of basic reference and subject material and a wide variety of fiction. We strive to give a maximum of service to both the students and faculty in relaxed, friendly, attractive atmosphere. However, the ef¬ ficiency of our operations could not be maintained without the whole-hearted work of our team of library assistants. MRS. MARY T. FITZPATRICK B.A., State Univ. of N. Y. The elective courses have enlivened as well as enriched the English curriculum: Functional English for the ninth and tenth grades, World Civilization at the sophomore level, American Civilization for eleventh grade students, and for seniors, Advanced Placement English and the Seminar in Contemporary Problems. These are designed to provide an appropriate program for each student based on his aptitude for mathematics and his longer-range educational goals. A pilot, or ex¬ perimental effort has been added in the area of General Mathematics. This provides a new approach to the teach¬ ing of General Mathematics. It is called the Multi-Sensory and Laboratory method. Many audio-visual aids are utilized so that each student is able to participate in classroom demonstrations. Interest and enjoyment continues high for those math students who have competed as members of Jefferson High School’s team in the Fairfax County inter-high math league matches. Several of our students, on their own time, are taking formal instruction in computer science three afternoons a week at Oakton High School. The Fairfax County School Board, whose computer center is located at Oakton, sponsors this program for the bene¬ fit of all county high schools. LUROFF H. WILLIAMS B.S., Central Mo. Mr. Morris and Mrs. Nelson likewise are con¬ ducting biology classes in labs that have just been unwrapped for 1967-68. With Mr. Brugnolotti as a member of the team, Biology II should, this year, finally get its feet firmly on the ground. Yet, since the class is far from being overcrowded, and blessed with science talent, the sky is the limit. Talk about field trips, this class offers the best. Our planetarium did not quite reach a point of completion in order to be a part of the science department’s offerings for this year. But next year will see a revival of astronomical interests at Jefferson. A new addition to the course offerings in the science department is the PSSC advanced topics. This is offered in conjunction with the fourth period physics class. In a study of specially selected topics in physics, the above-average student is given an opportunity to investigate challenging areas of greater depth and increased sophistication. This new addition in science offers great possibilities for the students who enjoy doing individual re¬ search. JOSEPH T. BRUGNOLOTTI B.S., Appalachian State Univ. ART The Art Department plans to expand its offering in the fields of graphics and the Fine Art version of crafts. It hopes also to offer some opportunities in creative photography. Materials are on order to enable the teach¬ ing of silk screen painting, copper plate etch¬ ing, and possibly lithography. The depart¬ ment is indebted to the Industrial Art depart¬ ment for the loan of an essential printing press. The Art III and IV classes spent the day in New York City November 4, 1967, commenc¬ ing with a morning tour of Pratt Institute’s Art Studios, and including the Guzzinhein and Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Mrs. Knapp lends a helping hand. 36 JONATHAN H. HOFFMAN A.B., Coll, of Wm. and Mary Univ. of Colorado Department Chairman JAMES A. GETTY B.M.E., M.M., Illinois Wesleyan University ' SmSmteS MUSIC The Music Department provided Jefferson students with a wide variety of musical groups from which to choose, both instrumental and choral. The instrumental department began the 1967- 68 school year with the successful “Marching Colonials,” an organization made up of sym¬ phonic band members for the purpose of pro¬ viding half-time entertainment at home football games, and competing at state contests. The Symphonic Band extended their concert season by presenting a Christmas Concert, February “Pops” Concert, Festive Concert, the Exchange Concert and the formal Spring Concert. The choral department made musi c available to all those students who wished to be a part of a musical organization. The inexperienced vocalist could be a member of the Girls Chorus or the Mixed Chorus while more advanced students were chosen by audition for the Concert Choir and the Madrigals. New this year was the Colonial Chorale, a chamber choir, open to the entire student body by audition, which meets one even¬ ing each week. HOME ECONOMICS This year the Home Economics Department could give ample space and attention to its sewing classes due to the new sewing room and the addition of a new teacher, Mrs. Francis Smith. Home Economics class not only works on improving the girls’ sewing and cooking skills, but also teaches consumer buying, child care and training, and home furnishing. The girls have decided that there really is something to the slogan “The Way to a Man’s Heart” and many will continue their Home Economics work in future years. The Juniors and Seniors extend their knowledge of the above topics and begin thinking about “Looking Toward Marriage in the Future”. The parents also show an interest in Home Economics and have several opportunities to see their daughters’ work. The Department sponsors the Holiday Exhibit at Christmas, and the Style Show in May. They coordinate classroom study and on-the-job training, making it possible for the students to attend classes at school and work in an office or store during the remaining part of the day. At present, seventeen students are enrolled in V.O.T. As well as receiving practical training, they become acquainted with various jobs and learn much about personal behavior and social relations. The office experience is an extension of the classroom instruction. Distributive Education refers to Vocational Education for those students interested or en¬ gaged in distributing goods and services to the public. This includes retail, wholesale, and ser¬ vice occupations. D.E. gives preparatory in¬ struction to students interested in distribution as a career, in laying a foundation for further education in distribution, or in learning more about the principles of free enterprise. Students involved in or preparing for occupations followed by proprietors, managers, or employees in distri¬ bution also find the vocational instruction in D.E. invaluable. 41 HEALTH and PHYSICAL EDUCATION LOUIS ASTOLFI B.S., George Washington University MISS NANCY L. The win¬ less season, however, was highlighted by exceptional performances from several players. Bob “Rat” Fisher and Roland Beasley shared the quarterbacking job this year and both did a fine job in that department. Top pass receivers were flanker Craig DeAtley, who picked up 343 yards in 27 completions, and Jim Hartinger who gathered in 12 passes for 192 yards and the best yard¬ age per catch. Number one rusher, fullback Brad Butts, carried the football for 357 yards, while halfback Fred Kozak picked up 252 yards, averaging almost 5 yards per carry. Standouts on the defensive team were Brian Provancha and Team Captain Carl Prather. Defensive end Brian Provancha was selected for the Northern Vir¬ ginia District All-Star team. At the season’s end, the team members as a whole selected the receivers of Varsity football’s three highest awards. The Best Back Award went to Brad Butts, while the Best Lineman Award went to Brian Provancha. Fred Kozak received the highly coveted Best Sportsmanship Award. Looking to the future, several extremely promising Varsity players will be returning next year. They are Chris Westcott, John Kelly, George Kluson, and Joe Dye. With the addition of many outstanding Junior Varsity prospects and the benefits of a year’s experience of working with Head Coach Ray Peterson and his assist¬ ants, the outlook for next year’s team is promising. The coaches, Mr. Henderson and Mr. Huntley, were successful in molding a well balanced team, while producing many strong and experienced football players for the Varsity next year. Outstanding defensive men were linebacker and team Captain Bill Harvell, and lineman Charlie Mul- lin. Offensively, quarterbacks Richard Fisher and Perry Robinson did extremely well in moving the team. Larry Glafen and Steve Martenson led in rushing, while Mark Troutman and Doug Lowrey dominated in the pass re¬ ceiving department. Mark Troutman was high scorer with four Colonial touchdowns. Tremendous desire and pride were evident in all the Junior Varsity team members. By retaining these quali¬ ties and developing their talent to the fullest, the little Colonials can assure a much improved Jefferson Var¬ sity in the years to come. In their first three encounters, the little Colonials were soundly defeated, being held scoreless in each contest. How¬ ever, the remaining three games showed the marks of an experienced and highly improved team. The final game of the season against Annandale was the team’s best performance, although they lost 25 to 13. Outstanding members of this year’s team were running backs Kenny Fisher and Bob Taibbi, and de¬ fensive ends Mike Barbee and Don Boyd. Doug Car- neal was credited with maintaining the essentials of team spirit and unity. It is hoped that the game experience gained by the youngest Colonials will prove valuable in the fu¬ ture. With intensive coaching, and determined efforts from each individual player, it is certain that these boys will form a solid Junior Varsity team in the coming year. Cross¬ country is a fall sport which consists of running a rough countryside course of two to three miles in length. Be¬ sides being a highly competitive sport, it is also con¬ sidered excellent training for those participating in spring track. Despite an unimpressive record of one victory, four losses and one tie, there were some bright prospects among members of this year’s team. Outstanding first year performances were made by seniors Larry Catlett and Bernie Fuller. Steve Sexauer (school record holder), Keith Stevens, Tim Crowley, Mark Westcott, and Jon Neumann also completed outstanding seasonable per¬ formances, showing considerable promise for a highly improved team next year. Chris Bonham’s goal in the opening game proved to be the only Jefferson score of the season, however, as the remainder of the schedule proved to be somewhat disheartening. The feminine Colonials ended up with a 1-4-3 record despite their enthusiastic and determined efforts. T.J.’s goalie, Co-Captain Sherry Cable, was outstanding on defense. The team’s coach, Mrs. Cockerham, felt that lack of experience was the main reason for the team’s poor showing this year. The outlook for next year is good, however, as a large majority of the girls will be returning. The Junior Varsity Hockey team was also plagued by an inability to score. The team’s only two goals were scored by Star Poe and Susan Graham. The team’s coach, Miss Stacks, cited Sandy Sperry and Patty Foder as defensive standouts. It was a season of thrills and disappointments, but more importantly a season of pride and spirit. Coached by Mr. Wickline and urged onward by an enthusiastic “blue-shirted” student body, the Colonial roundballers turned in TJ’s best basketball win-loss record in history, as well as setting new milestones for future Co¬ lonial teams to match. The season opened with a heartbreaking loss to West Springfield. The Colonials rebounded quickly, however, and proceeded to reel off a string of six consecutive victories. The long awaited clash with Stuart ended in a one point de¬ feat, with the potential victory basket coming just seconds after the buzzer. But the biggest loss of the season did not take place until the next game. In a lop-sided victory over Falls Church, Colonial Mike Mileur broke his right leg. The loss of high scoring Mike dealt a hard blow to the hopes of the team. His 14.3 scoring average and most needed re¬ bounding abilities could not be replaced. The two consecu¬ tive defeats that followed reflected the tremendous loss. In a short time, however, John Hedland and Tim Hagen were doing fine jobs as replacements and the Colonials returned to victory road. But the high-precision teamwork was gone and a six point loss to Stuart in the Tournament showed the lack of that little extra something. Hard luck had denied the Jefferson team from reaching its greatest potential. Team-captain Tom Andrews was high scorer and was selected to the Northern Virginia 1-A All Star team. He also received the Best Sportsmanship Award. Jim Case received the Best Defensive Player Award as well as being selected to the All Star 2nd team. Jim established a new record of 97 recoveries in a season. Steve Greenstreet had the best free- throw percentage and was second highest rebounder and scorer. Bryon Cook set a new record with 188 rebounds and was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award. These boys were instrumental in moving our team to victory, but the other team members should not go unmentioned. The great season was the result of team effort and drive of Coach Wickline. The true power of the team was realized late in the sea¬ son when the Colonials successively defeated four of their opponents by margins of better than 20 points. Rebounding abilities excelled this year, as Mark Troutman, Wayne Wheeler, and Bill Kramer were close leaders in that department. In addition to these three boys, five other Colonials, includ¬ ing Cliff Kevill, Greg Smith, Wayne Short, Pat Cassidy, and Stu Simon, received the honor of being selected to represent the Northern District at the Northern Regional Tournament. A well-deserved note of congratulations should go to the Junior Varsity team, which, under the direction of Coach Astolfi, compiled a winning record. In its first year of existence, the team proved itself highly capable, while each member gained valuable experi¬ ence as training for future Varsity competition. POWDERPUFF Saturday, October 21, was the day that decided which class had the superior female athletes — Juniors or Seniors. After three weeks of bruising practice, the girls were ready for the test. Loyal fans flocked to the football field to watch zany cheerleaders, worried coaches and to cheer their favorite team to victory. The Juniors were very aggressive and led 8-0 for the first quarter. The Seniors came back in the second quarter and tied the score. The Juniors went out in front again and were confident about beating the mighty Sen¬ iors, but the steady running game of the Seniors produced a touchdown in the last minute of the game. The final score of 16-16 showed that the Juniors and Senior girls are equal in at least one field — athletics. The Junior Cheerleaders. 245 PAUL X o HOMECOMING The Freshman float. Its birthplace was a tiny shop in a village on the Boston Post Road some ten miles north of the Rhode Island line. It was there, in 1790, that a foreign artisan, whose name history has lost, introduced the art of manufacturing gilded buttons. The jewelry trade took root and in the early 19th century began to flourish. A tradition of craftsmanship and a legacy of skills were established in the area. Today, working with and alongside the sleek machine tools in Balfour factories in Attleboro and North Attleboro, are craftsmen whose fathers, grandfathers, and great¬ grandfather plied the trade before them here in the heartland of the fine Jewelry industry. 276 SPRINGFIELD HOUSE OF FLOWERS 6611 Backlick Road Springfield 451-8133 Special Discount for School Activities Central Charge Service Jeanne Centracchio and Tom Pitner explore among the many gift arrangements at Springfield House of Flowers. Ne found ourselves with the problem of trying to take pictures of events that had not yet happened and teams that were not yet chosen. We regret that it was not possible to cover events which took place after this date. (As this is written, we hope by special ar rangements with the publisher to include Miss Jefferson, 1968, who will be chosen March 30.) We first started plans for this book in the spring of 1967. Our staff developed into a small group of determined people who seemed always to lack one thing — time. However, something we did not lack was help, from a great many people. We would like to thank these people here. To the faculty and administration we owe great thanks for general cooperation and help with the necessary paperwork. We thank the student body for its excellent support of yearbook sales. Mrs. Elizabeth Button, the school’s finance secretary, has worked with the staffs each year tally¬ ing expenditures and deposits. Mrs. Betty Priestley helped us generously with alphabetical class rolls and pre-printed cards from her versatile Data Processing shop. Whenever we worked late evenings or over week-ends, Mr. Melton Dodson and Mr. John Young were always willing to help us in every way possible. Mr. Charles Baptie donated his time without profit to help with the developing and printing of pictures. We extend special thanks to Mr. John Attinello, Sr., who came to our rescue with the lovely photo¬ graph of his daughter (our Christmas Queen), Sandy. Our greatest thanks is reserved for our advisor, Col. Charles E. Brown. His experienced guidance made our dreams for this yearbook possible and we are deeply indebted to him.
