HARRINGTON B.S., Longwood College A.B., Virginia Union University M. Ed., Boston University M.A., Columbia University A revolution in mathematics has taken place and the new math no longer seems so new. Teachers and students both have been successfully indoctrinated into its peculiarities. Two new courses were offered this year: Matrix Algebra was replaced by Probability and Statistics, due to the expansion of the statistics field in our modern world, and the fifth year mathematics students enrolled in the new course called Analysis. To allow the students who had some difficulty in math to find themselves we offered courses in Algebra | and Algebra II. For those who had a very high mathematical ability Algebra II- Trigonometry and Functions provided rigorous exercises. The mathematic’s program was a broad, well-oriented one which provided for the needs and interests of Jefferson’s students. 26

SGIENGE DEPARTMENT With new faces and courses, this year’s Science Department qualified as one of the most changed departments in Jefferson. PSSC Physics was added to the curriculum as our first seniors demanded broader horizons. In- teresting experimental classes in SMS Biology were taught, along with the BSCS Green Biology course. To prepare Jefferson’s novice scientists for future studies in PSSC, BSCS, and CHEM Study, the Earth Science curric- ulum was further refined. New teachers in the Science Department included Mr. Colson in Physics and Mrs. Cushing in Chemistry. With this larger staff and a better program we hoped to develop a deeper interest in science and the scientific method, by adopt- ing the laboratory approach. oS REA NA ANAN ou “1 know it sounds funny, but it says right here, ‘Water the balance every hour’. . .” MARTIN S.
