ENGLISH DEPARTMENT A conglomoration of students piled nosily into buses exclaim- ing enthusiastically of Catholic University’s production of ‘’The Birds.’’ The students vastly enjoyed such field trips to local universities and theatres and to the National Gallery of Art, sponsored by the English Department. The department aimed to teach the student to read and listen with understanding; to think rationally; to speak and write well; to appreciate literature and language; and to be prepared to take his place as an active citizen of the community. At the senior level an Advanced Placement course was in- augurated with twenty-one students enrolled. Two classes in American Civilization, combining the correlated study of English and History, were offered to interested juniors. Next year a course in World Civilization will be initiated at the sophomore ' Par , y level.
