OUR PRINCIPAL TO THE GRADUATING CLASS Ble Mere | am happy to have the opportunity to write a brief message to you, the first grad- uating class of Thomas Jefferson High School. | know that your high school career has not been an easy one, in that you have not been able to settle down in one school and know that this would be “‘your’’ school for four years. You have, however, played a very important role in the establishment and de- velopment of our new school, and | want to express my appreciation to all of you for your efforts in behalf of Jefferson High. | am happy that so many of you have made plans to further your education in one way or another. Life in this period of time is getting more and more complicated, and | feel that the more knowledge we have, about as many areas of living as possible, the hap- pier will be our lives. Regardless of your plans, however, | am certain that all of you will have the oppor- tunity to live happy, successful lives if you are willing to work to this end. We hope that you feel that your high school career has been successful and that you now feel ready for the next big step in your life. | know that | speak for all of your teachers, as well as myself, when | wish you the very best of everything. PTA COMMUNITY PTA activities began early in the year with the impressive opening of our football stadium. Many were present to share the dramatic mo- ment when our lights, for which our commu- nity had worked so hard, were first turned on. During the ceremony Congressman Broyhill presented an American flag to our school. Many parents attended the annual Back- to-School Night, where they were familiarized with the modern educational techniques em- ployed at Jefferson. There were also regular PTA meetings to discuss problems of mutual concern to par- ents and the school. Speaking for the students of Jefferson, we would like to express our gratitude for such a fine community and the time and resources so generously given to us by its members. Pea SN enenl ee NNT]

Let me congratulate the Senior Class of 1966 upon achieving their goal for which they have been work- ing for the past twelve years. | wish, also, to congratulate the entire student body for having a part in the opening of this fine school. Yes, we have had problems, and we have not all thought alike on every project but we have been able to work them out to the best interests of all concerned. |! was delighted when your Principal, Mr. William Jordan, asked me to come here with him and have a part, small as it may be, in opening this new and wonderful high school. It is with no small feeling of regret that | must retire and turn my part of this work over to others, but after forty-four years of work in the public schools of Virginia | think it is about time to step aside and let others take over. My first high school had six graduates, the Class of ‘66 has about 350, so you know | have seen the school systems grow. This session closes twenty years of school in Fair- fax County. The last two years have been with you here at Jefferson High School. You have wonderful possibilities to grow into a great school and | am looking forward to seeing you be- come one of the best if not the best schools in the area. With the end of this session | am retiring from public school work and with this | say goodbye and may the richest blessings be yours in the years to come. WILL H. BARRETT SO LONG, MR.
