Mr. Carroll F. Adams French, Fleur de Lys, DEPARTMENT p At Jefferson we have an outstand- ing language department. Offered are Spanish, Latin, French, Russian, and, this yeau, German. Each language group has its own club, except for German which has not yet organized one. The Junior Classical League is the Latin Club with Mrs. Baird as the advisory Fleur de Lys is the French Club with Mr. Adams as the advisor, and the Pan American League, which is the Spanish Club, has Miss Snede- gar as its sponsor, and the Russian Club is sponsored by Mrs. Petersen. Two of the grougs have their own newspapers publis ed by the stu- dents. The Roanoke Roman is the Misa Suzanne Snedelar Pan American League, Spanish, Student Cooperative Association L'Echo, Hi-Y Latin newspaper, and L'Echo de Roanoke is the French publication. Mr. Frank 0. Smith Government To graduate from Jefferson two units are required in history. American history is taken in the junior year and govern- ment in the senior year. We have a very capable staff of his- tory and government teachers. Under the leadership of our history teachers we gain a full knowledge of the government of Virginia and of the United States. We learn about explorers and other famous people who founded, explored, and settled our free nation. We learn more about how it is run in our government class. One of the big events of the school year in this department was the trip to Wil- liamsburg, which was open to all students, here at Jefferson. Under the skilled leadership of Mr. Coh- ron we have some of the best plays in the Virginia High School Dramatics League. Especially successful this year was the musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie. The Art Department contributes to many phases of school life at Jefferson throughout the year and gives inspiration and Mr. William H. Holley pleasure to the entire student body through its frequent and outstanding art exhibits. It offers classes in basic advanced and consumer art. Art, Guidance Mr. Joseph Cohron English, Drama, Speech Thespians The band, conducted by, Mr. An- drew W. Hullg the choir, headed s by Mrs. Margaret Kidd, the dra- matics department directed by Mr. Joe Cohron, and the Art De- partment under the guidance of Mr. William Holley make up im- portant parts of our school life. The band adds spirit to football games and pep assemblies and prlegents an annual spring con- ce . The choir adds reverence to the Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter assemblies and also pre- sents an annual spring concert. Mrs. Margaret Kidd Mr. A. W.
